Mack's last chance

To be fair Mack won 10 or more games at Texas 9 years in a row and never finished below 2nd in those years…Also he beats Bama IMO if Colt doesn’t get hurt…Who else has done that at Texas the Great Football Program…
remember his staff there?…see where they are, what they’ve done.

When TV does a segment on a Coaching Tree, how many times do they focus on the Mack Brown coaching tree? How many of Mack's former assistants have become first rate HCs?

drawing a blank when it comes to most successful assistants not named chizik…an asterisk goes there, though.

Why does it matter if his staff went on to be great head coaches? Dean's coaching tree was mid other than Roy and Roy's coaching tree is trash. Should we take away from their legacy? Being an assistant and being a head coach are two different animals.

it isn’t a large deal to me, but the point is they didn’t excel…he won a lot of games at texas because of talent, but only one title because of vince young.

If Mack had won many more than just 2 conference championships in a long career, it might not matter much at all. But coaching tree production does matter, a good deal, in how we should evaluate the total production of any celebrated HC. That's why the top assistant award is named for Frank Broyles, who did produce a large number of winning coaches and coordinators.

AS for Dean: his coaching tree is much more than just Roy. Larry Brown, George Karl, Eddie Fogler. Even Bill Guthridge took 3 teams to the Final Four.

They didn't excel as head coaches. 99% of assistant coaches fail at being a head coach. It's not something that specific to Mack.

Well, you're judging coaches by championships, so by that definition, Dean's tree was just mid.

are you saying you want him involved in the search and/or hire?

did he not recommend fedora?
No not saying that, we let Roy do that and I'm not a fan of it, coaches hire with their heart not their heads with what's best for the school in mind!

I'm not downplaying because of anything happening now. I'm giving you my opinion formed at that time and with what happened then. I'm actually upplaying Vince Young. UT owes Vince Young more than Mack Brown for that national championship. If that national ,championship would have come about with a lesser QB, I wouldn't be saying this. But with a lesser (but still really good) QB, there is no championship. Maybe you can find video of the game and you'll see what I mean. You won't agree of course, but you'll see what I mean.

We have a DC with a championship under his belt. And you can say whatever you want to about it, but I assure you that he doesn't get that championship without Cam Newton. Auburn owes that championship to Cam Newton.

ETA I don't mention the last part just because both coaches happen to be
here. That's coincidental. I mention it because those are the two instances where a superman QB put a team on his back and carried it to a championship. I'm comparing Newton to Young, and their championships.
Wasn't Ted Roof the DC for Auburn when they won a national championship in 2010?

Nick Saban seems to be to always hire because he thinks that guy already has IT, or that under his tutelage that guy can get IT. Saban is not sentimental.
