Looks more and more like this one is going to play havoc on the mid-Atlantic coast of the U.S. . .

This is when I miss living on Topsail Island. Easily my favorite thing to do is ride out a hurricane on the beach. (disclaimer -- obviously hate the damage it causes and the lives affected, but just the experience itself is pretty awesome)

Left in 2007 for work / family. My parents used to have a place at St Regis and I worked the desk there for a few years while I was a student at UNCW. My granddad had a place in Sneads Ferry too.

I'm envious of you. Those were prolly some great times . .

I've bounced around. In between Charlottesville and DC currently, but I'm being transferred to South Carolina in a few months.

I'm tired of the weather here! Winter is just cold, and most of the time won't even snow. Just cold. Summers are 90 degrees with no breeze whatsoever. Just from one extreme to the other!

Charlottesville - other than now being a liberal haven - is a really, really cool spot. It's hard to dislike it there regardless of weather. It's easy to dislike NOVA. Other than that area being steeped in history, I find very little of NOVA attractive and I try my best to not visit places above Culpepper.

I thought you were a big weather guy. Do you not appreciate winter storms and whatnot like you do summer storms? I love a blizzard. I love when cities get shut down on account of snow. There are few things I like more than driving around in heavy snowfall at night time when no one else is on the road. Awesome.

Good luck in SC.

The countryside here is gorgeous, especially this time of year. I love extreme weather, which is why the weather here sucks -- for every decent snow storm, you have to wait 3 to 4 years in between for another one. I have lived here since 2007, and I can count on one hand how many decent snowstorms we have gotten (meaning, over 12 inches). Thunderstorms are virtually non-existent. I know the myth is that the mountains break them up, and I did my own research and there is actually some truth to that because of the way the updraft ahead of storms is impacted by the mountains. I have watched - consistently - huge storms over in the valley completely dissipate by the time they clear the mountains. My bucket list though before we move is to get out to white water rafting...at least once.

I know you've mentioned being around the Lynchburg area, and that is actually my hometown. I moved away in 2001 for college and haven't been back (other than driving through) since, but that is easily my favorite spot in Virginia.

Damn, I thought this one would miss FL. They moved the track left in last update. not good. Good thing I just bought flood insurance. Will probably hit FL and NC. BTW, God keeps punishing Haiti for vodoo :p

My BIL had a house rented for this weekend at Hatteras for a 5 day fishing expedition with 6 or 7 other guys. The wifey just said the owner has cancelled the rental so he can board up his home. If, this is a slow moving storm, the roads on the island wll likely be be washed away.

Oh snap? You went to high school here? Where? And what year did you graduate?

As far as snow storms, your memory isn't serving you well. In the winter of 2011-2012, we had 3 storms alone of 12 inches - Dec 18, Dec 25 and mid January. That was impressive. Then just last year we got hit hard again. I know Cville got pretty much the same thing we did.

When I was really young, we moved to Brookneal, so I wound up going to William Campbell (which just about no one outside of a 20 mile radius has ever heard of!). Feels like eons ago at this point! But I've always loved getting back to L'burg...just been forever.

Too early to tell I guess with the storm track BUT Could this game be moved to a NIGHT game OR as an earlier gent said a Sunday game??? How realistic is that especially the Sunday option???

I would imagine ESPN has more say in the matter than UNC. If ESPN doesn't want to move it then it most likely won't happen.

Is that actually in the law?

I would imagine so. How can you get troopers to come direct traffic for football during a State of Emergency due to a hurricane? Or put buses on the road? Or add to traffic from fans trying to make it to and from?

Just pray its no more than a cat 2 when it hits here. I've been here through 5 hurricanes now but none were major. Pleasure island (carolina beach, kure beach, fort fisher) is 18 ft above sea level at its highest point (which is a big sand dune in the state park, take out the dune and 9ft is the highest point) so any significant storm surge will put the island underwater. I have lots of friends on the island freaking out this morning. Theres lots of really old housing and businesses that have been grandfathered in for not being hurricane resistant. Downtown carolina beach will cease to exist if a cat 3 makes a direct hit. Nothing is on stilts and its all flat tar roofs. Its inevitable this day would come though i guess.

Just keeping my fingers crossed that the eye stays east of our coastline. Everything is already soaked here; sustained hurricane-force winds will do tremendous damage throughout ENC.

I moved from Pawley's Island, SC in 1995 and haven't regretted it. I had to endure Hugo and a few others. No, thanks! The coast is beautiful, but I'd never live there again.

It has been a while since we have had a hurricane with major impact. If it comes in as a cat 2, it will have some moderate damage in the coast with lots of flooding. Worse case is it coming ashore at high tide. With the swell from the storm, that hurts in my area. The only benefit I gain is more work than I can handle for weeks.
When Floyd came thru, I estimated for 2 weeks straight. I learn to charge for estimates. $100 per estimate with half back if awarded the job.

Sam's club is slammed right now.

everything is soaked , you mean in Gvegas?

Well yes, but the eastern part of the state in general. With the tropical storm a few weeks back and greater-than-normal rainfall most of the summer, the ground is already saturated. Which means more flooding, more downed trees, more damage in general if another storm comes through. It's the same reason Floyd was so bad.

GTFO.

No, seriously, GTFO.

schools shut down the rest of the week here in cola....just bizarre.

kinda hope our place in surfside gets totaled though.

I just talked to my other sister. They live in Murrel's Inlet. She says they are coming here in the morning. I just hope everyone is safe. This looks like a serious one this time.
