I love his infectious smile, and I'm sure he is a great teammate, but he is the weakest, softest, no jumping big man to ever wear the Tar Heel uniform! He is a turnover waiting to happen!

Gets his shot blocked down low almost every time. He is so slow afoot that he can't help defend the pick 'n roll . .

He is what he is . . . and don't expect any more than what you have seen,

Joel James is the much better player.

I would almost rather start Joel, hicks in second , and Meeks last. Something is not right with him. Physically or mentally, either way he is a liability

To be fair, Hicks is showing he can play in the NBA with his raw talent that needs work but will develope into a player that will stay around a while.

That is such a joke. James shouldn't see the floor ever.

Kennedy is a solid but not particularly great player.

Thing is tonight I saw Meeks several times throw it down one hand or two with a running start or standing still....all with VERY LITTLE EFFORT. .so o think it's in his head. I have no idea why he doesn't go up strong in games especially against smaller players.

LOL . . . The only joke is your post defending his play. Apparently, you are not watching the same game everyone else is.

Meeks' line : . . 2/9 FGs . . 6 rebs . . 1 TO . . 3 fouls . . . 4 points.

Is there any wonder that he's always the first player that Roy subs for . . ? And thats usually at the 2 and a half minute mark.

At HIS 12 pts and 14 Boards.

Can't we just enjoy ONE DERN WIN without picking out a player and throwing him under the dern bus?

i think enjoyment is there, it's just frustrating to see a guy not improve in anything other than weight loss...and hey, good for him getting healthier, but his contribution to this team is limited.

What Y'all want Roy to do, kick him off the team?

Limit his minutes. As a starter he contributes so very little. It may be his knee, or it could be he just isn't talented enough to play at this level.

Watching post game pressers and a reporter just ask Roy "Why does Kennedy not jump" and Roy answered this question with "idk why he has trouble with that" and it wasn't a smart ass answer Roy took it as good question!

Thought that was an interesting exchange!

He wasn't defending his play, he said Meeks was the better player between he & James, and he was right. James should rarely see the floor & Meeks can provide quality minutes at times. I also think your comment was laughable, now don't go putting words in my mouth like you did his.

He does that. Hicks learns to quit fouling he will get more-more.

Y'all keep running over em, I'm going to just enjoy the ride.

So its Hicks' fault that Meeks plays as pitiful as he does . . ?

I don't need to run over him, our opponents are doing a great job of that . . hell, by the time I get to him, he looks like he's been in one of those Allstate Mayhem commercials.

James would eat Meeks for lunch.

Some will defend some till the bitter end, why is it not ok for us to just have a dud from time to time!

Meeks brings nothing to the table other than a warm body, I see that Roy is doing all he can to limit his minutes, but we don't have to pretend like he is one of the greatest players to every live just because the jersey says Carolina on the front!

Nobody is pretending that , I'm just saying he's better than James, & I don't think it's close, just based on BBall IQ alone.

The thing that bothers me is that he either can't or won't jump either way that's never good when playing basketball regardless of what level!

Last year Gary used to refer to "Good JP and Bad JP"

I think the same applies now for Meeks:

Good Kennedy:
Defence: Plays within his physical limitations, doesn't over-hedge on ball screens, covers the middle of the paint, provides help D - especially timely blocks, anticipates passes and either disrupts them or makes steals, Rebounds well and makes quick and efficient outlet passes.
Offence: Establishes good low position early, receives passes then keeps the ball up for a 'kiss' off the glass lay-in, plays high post and either shoots a good turn-around or passes to a baseline cutter or to a free perimeter player.

Bad Kennedy:
Defence: Too often caught out of position/unable to read or react to plays, gives up driving lanes and doesn't make the driver pay, fails to box out his man leading to easy second chance shots. Poor help defence and positional play.
Offence: Takes the ball down to Hobbiton, dribbles into defenders/multiple defenders, slow to establish post presence, fumbles passes/unable to control the ball above his head, either shies away from contact to the detriment of his shot or seeks too much contact to the detriment of his shot.

Sorry to say we've seen much more of the Bad than the Good this season. Sure, there've been very good games, but post injury there have been too few.

Kennedy still has a role to play this season and I'm hoping he'll improve on his first round.

Meeks is having problems with his vertical jump and he always has but he is a space eater and can score with either hand. To say he has no game and his minutes should be limited is silly. For three years I read here that Bryce Johnson had no game but then the light came on. Meeks does not have the paint moves of Johnson but few do. All I know he is a Tar Heel and I will continue to root for the big guy.

Here is my thought on Meeks and how he can contribute and make us a better team. He absolutely must stop the pump/head fake after he makes his moves in the paint. There are many times that he makes a nice quick move but then allows multiple guys to collapse on him because he pump fakes instead of finishing the move with a shot. He also needs to look to shoot the little foul line and in jumper. Most of the problems he runs into are bringing the ball low and head faking too much and at that point any shot he is going to get up is going to get blocked. He is just too small with too little jumping ability to be effective in the paint if guys are collapsing.

He needs to use his passing ability to pass out of double teams, not try to beat them with ineffective post moves. As a freshman, Kennedy's best asset was his passing ability; not sure where that's gone.

Even in a victory some of you cannot wait to jump on one of our own. Pretty sad really.

BTW, not everyone in this thread jumped on him, so my post DOES NOT apply to you that did not.

In Kennedy's defense he gets fouled an awful lot with very few calls. Just because a guy isn't an athletic monster like Hicks doesn't mean body bumps and slapping hands aren't fouls. And those things affect your shot a lot.

As several people have said several times he is better all around on offense if he plays at the ft line facing the basket. Shooting and passing. He is just a bad option as a low post , on the blocks offensive player

A prime example of Billy boy's lack of basketball acumen. Love Joel James, but Kennedy is a much better player. He is what he is, but he is a valuable asset to this team. He is never going to be dominant, but to say James is more productive is asinine.

Meeks: 10 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 57% FG, 21 MPG

James: 2.4 PPG, 1.4 RPG, 47%FG, 9 MPG

Even if you triple James' MPG, his numbers don't match Kennedy's. He has to be the most under appreciated player on our team.

I think you are the only one that believes that.
Nope, I agree with Billy. James is far more confident when he receives the ball AND he has the ability, skill and vision to PASS THE BALL BACK OUT when he's not in good position - something KM cannot/will not do.

KM scores more points, sure ... but he also turns it over and takes bad shots at an alarming pace. James seems to be much smarter with the ball and he sure as heck plays better defense than KM.

Maybe "eat for lunch" is a strong statement but KM has been, for the most part, a liability.

Meeks was showing more mobility and confidence before the December knee injury. He opened the season 25/12 on Temple and had me seeing NBA potential. I'd say the knee injury probably limited his conditioning too. I get our fan frustration with his play sometimes, but the team is going to need a few tougher performances from him if they're going to play 5 more games. I'm rooting for the big fella.
