Movies that are "GREAT" that I just don't get the appeal...

I never said I hate the guy. I just don't like him.
Sorry... being dissatisfied with Hanks. He such a seminal actor and in so many films, it's a shame you're dissatisfied with him. I think he even brings out the better performances in his co-stars.

One of my favorite Hanks films is That Thing You Do... which he directed. The subject matter is obviously an appeal for me. But, they nailed all the little details of the time.

My entry is pretty much any superhero/comic book movie ever made. That goes for Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Iron Man, Ant Man, Man Man... the X-Men, Y-Men, Z-Men, and whatever combinations of those guys fighting each other, friending each other, etc.
I've never watched any of them... not one.

the only super hero movies I know are the first 2 Superman's with Reeve. And, I watched the first 2 Spider Man's with Tobey Maguire.

I see trailers for these multi-player DC/Marvel comic epics and it's like an acid trip.

There's another one... totally didn't get the appeal. I watched that recently. Mostly boring. Maybe I wasn't in an avant-garde mood.

I hate these "artsy" movies that get nominated every year. Watched Shape of Water, 3 billboards, and Lady Bird...all completely pointless.

Get Out was by far a better movie in every sense.

Was that the movie about the family that was abducting black folks and giving them lobotomies? That was weird as shit. And not great. But for some reason, I watched that absurdity anyway.

Yes.

How do you figure it wasn't great? It is incredibly clever, has easter eggs all over the movie, and absolutely original.

How is that not better than watching 2 hours of an uncharismatic 17 year old girl figure out if she likes someone?

It was quite a premise. I'll give them that. What are "easter eggs"?

The ending was terrible. I mean, of course I was rooting for the guy to get away. But c'mon, stabbing the doctor with the deer mount? And even before that, the dude get's his head destroyed by a bocce ball and then 10 minutes later he's fine and able to fight the guy again? C'mon man. And the guys friend (black guy with glasses), I didn't know if I was supposed to laugh at his part or not. His jokey-ness seemed misplaced in a movie that's about black people being abducted and given lobotomies.

Movies like this piss me off because the characters never do the right thing - which is always a logical thing to do and would make all the difference in getting away.

I really liked that movie.
I thought Birdman may be the worst movie I've ever seen.
Birdman is a divisive one for sure, people all seem to love it or hate it. I happen to fall more to the love it side, but I understand why it's not a movie for everyone.

I will agree that Get Out was great (definitely in my top movies from last year), but I also thought Shape of Water and 3 Billboards were great. Lady Bird falls more in the "artsy" with no point sort of movie, which are more about character building than actual story. The story of Lady Bird is very secondary to the characters, if that makes sense. I still enjoyed LB, but not as much as those others. The two "worst" offenders of last year's best picture nominees when it comes to character over plot were Phantom Thread and Call Me by Your Name, both well acted and well made, and both have plots where very little actually happens.

Fight Club was trash. @ me all the **** you want.

I had missed this poast but I love That Thing You Do. Steve Zahn is great in that movie

I won't go that far but for me, it definitely wasn't as good as it was for everyone else. I actually like the movie better now when I watch it because I know the ending.

Also, Brad Pitt gets on my nerves. I don't hate him. But he definitely gets on my nerves in some movies.

I guess it's all about what do you want out of a movie.

I want to be entertained. Whether I'm laughing, thinking, afraid, etc. etc....LB did none of that.

My issue with 3 billboards is that it didn't end. That seems to be the thing with most of these artsy movies, they just kinda end without wrapping up the actual plot.

Like in 3B, did they find the guy? What happened? You can't just leave me with those two driving in the car.

That's fair, the ending was more a conclusion of the character arcs vs. a conclusion to the story. I can understand your thinking there.

As far as the comic book movies go @Hark_The_Sound_2010 and @gunslingerdick, I completely understand the thought that they need to just go away. There has been an oversaturation of them for a while. I've enjoyed most of them that have come out in my lifetime, but there are only two that are must see. Keaton Batman and Deadpool. The others just kind of blend together for the most part.

Agree for the most part.

Loved The Watchmen though.

Watchmen was a good one. I did feel like it was a little too long though. I was really speaking more about your traditional superheroes. Superman, X-Men, Iron Man, etc. The average person probably doesn't know Watchmen is based on a comic. If we expand it to include graphic novels, I would add Sin City to the list of must watch.

Never saw Deadpool.

I like the Christopher Reeve Superman movies - at least I and II. I like the Keaton Batman movies. The first Ironman movie was good because RD Jr is amazing and it was still kind of new back then. And the Hulk movie with Edward Norton is decent. But that's about where it ends for me.

Deadpool is a good one because it's kind of a different take. He actually makes fun of the whole comic book movie thing. He breaks the 4th wall a lot and it's really more of a comedy than a comic book movie. The Reeve's Superman movies are decent, but that's before my lifetime.
