Nate Laszewski could be Brady Manek

It's all speculative at this point, as it was last year,, that is some of the fun. Last year I thought RJ & Caleb would be joined at the hip, while many were luke warm at best with them playing together as the backcourt, or outright against it.

Thought Walton would lose time, not start as many did think he was a lock to, mainly because the shooting would be much better across the roster, and his weaknesses would be a point needed from a player with the roster makeup. Leaky would get 1st crack at that and would have to play his way out. Many wanted no part of Leaky big minutes.

The roster may still change a bit, but as it stands now, at this point, barring injury or individual game foul trouble, I think Mando plays around 35+ minutes. Washington, (fingers crossed with durability), plays big minutes.

I would like another experienced big on the roster, we are very thin at the 4 and 5. Shaver is next man up to be a natural fit, but I do not think he is a double digit minute guy as a frosh (hopefully I am wrong, and he is actually a step in ready type, that is not a knock on him, I think he is a guy they are developing to be that type down the line). The other options are undersized options, with Styles having the most upside in my opinion, I'm not huge on Puff as a 4 for any elongated stretches.

If Caleb and Kerwin stay, the roster is set though. If not, the addition Hubert pulls will be very interesting.

I agree with pretty much all that shit.

I'm assuming Shaver is good for 8-10 mpg spelling Armando.
8-10 minutes total over the whole season maybe.

He's a project. Sweet jumpshot. But he's not expected to contribute for a couple years. He'll play when the walk-ons play next year.

Washington is Bacot's backup if we don't add anyone else. He's currently 6'9" 225 lbs with a massive 7'4" wingspan. He'll be a defensive presence in the paint with that length. And I imagine Jonas will get him to add more weight.

As for replacing Manek, if we don't add a transfer, we'll be doing it by committee. Puff, Styles, Leaky, Washington, McKoy, and Nickel will all get a chance to show what they can do as a stretch 4.

Hey D or 75,
How many minutes do you think Shaver will get? I hope you guys aren't thinking I'm down on him or Tyler. I just think they both need to adjust to the speed, size, strength, and skill of this level since both grew up playing where size could win out! I also believe they both will be major contributors eventually, I just am not sure both will realize that potential next season! The situation seems to indicate Shaver will get an opportunity to show what he can do before Tyler since we are still thin in the frontcourt + packed on the wing! They both have some things that cannot be taught too-both have high motors, toughness, coachability, and will to win!

I have no idea as to how many minutes any player will receive, however, you can bank on individual players getting what minutes that they will earn. I expect Shaver will get his opportunities early and we can all see if 2 summers of PU ball and S&C has expedited his growth and maturity to the point that he can play and spell the 5 spot for 10 or so minutes a game.

As with most all new arrivals, they will have to learn to play without fouling, and that takes some studious work. I know that he is working diligently on his foot speed. This is a primary failing with young Bigs and a major source of foul troubles. He is good to very good offensively, but cannot be chasing his man constantly on defense which so often leads to committing those silly looking fouls that mount up quickly. I do expect him to get some burn at the 5. How much? All that he earns.

Thanks. I noticed the footwork issue as well. I was hoping it was because he needed coaching and not due to naturally heavy feet. I like Shaver a lot and I know what Jonas and staff can do. He is in the perfect place based on staff, system, and opportunity to maximize his potential.

I think peeps will really be surprised at the growth of this young man! I also think both Puff and Styles will really take a step up next season!

Hubs might have a team ready to do big things without needing a star from the portal!

I realize that McKoy didn't show much this year, but I think it was Jawad that blogged about how impressed he was with McKoy during last summer's pick up games. I'm hoping that Jawad saw something that will come to fruition next season. Go Heels !!!

Sometimes pick-up games don't translate into real games. Orlando Melendez was all world in pick-up games and rarely saw the court in real games. Nate Britt, as a high school junior, kicked Kendall Marshall's entire team's ass in pick-up on a recruiting visit; and while he had a solid career, you would have thought he was destined for NBA stardom when that story first came out.

McKoy has been in the ACC for 3 years. His best game was 5 points against a bad UVA team. Regardless of how great he looks in pickup games, he does not perform well on the big stage.

Hard call TP, I think the plan is to see if he can be Bacot's primary back up olr if Washington has to rotate between starting at the 4 and backing Bacot up at the 5. His prior to UNC vids don't show me a a clear picture. What I suspect is that he is maybe a bit taller version of Deon, I do suspect his conditioning prior to joining us and suspect that is being worked on by our S/C staff. I get the sense that he was not used to a lot of contact in high school, I wanted to see more of an aggressive streak in him, a bit of a mean streak. Now that Ant is out it would be a great idea for this kid to move in with Bacot, just mirror Bacot in everything he does.

I would suggest how I think of this kid next season is a far different answer now than it would have been had he not come in early and join the team in Jan. I think he will be far more advanced and ready for next season than he would have been had he not come early. How much PT does he get, I would think a solid 8-10mins a game would be great, with Washington getting some limited minutes at the 5 but if Shaver can not handle those minutes, then Washington rotates to the 5 when Bacot sits.

Nichel, I see him more as a 4 than a 3 and frankly, we have a lot of smallish 4s and they all have game experience that Tyler lacks. Yet they all give a unique different look. My take on our under sized 4s so Washington is not included in this:

McKoy - good on and off ball defender but not elite, better jump shooter than what he showed us last season. Has the strength to be able to rebound and blocks out. He is not a shot blocking threat. Good effort guy, he works when he is out there, better off ball defender than on ball. Sets decent screens. Does not seem to want to take the big shot.

Puff the Magic Johnson - Better than expected defender, not elite YET, showed some shooting chops but can shoot MUCH better than what he has shown so far, on the shelf so long seems to need this off season to re-hone in his shooting stroke. Very LONG 6'8" frame, still needs to bulk up, another 15lbs of muscle this off season would do a world of good for him but Cam struggled to keep weight on, Puff have a similar frame. LOVE watching Puff block out, kid puts everything he has in blocking out, he blocked Banchero all the way to the free throw line on a critical duke free throw miss, that was funny for me! With that long reach, Puff can block and alter some shots. Look up the word effort in the dictionary, I am pretty sure it has a picture of Puff there! Rushes himself to often, game still seems a touch fast for him, sets decent screens but rolls off looking for the ball, not skeered to take a big shot!

Styles - The most athletic of this group but at 6'6" he is the shortest as well. There is leadership traits there that we have not seen yet, was a big time leader in high school, Lynch level leadership traits. Good quickness to the spot and really good leaper but seems to struggle a bit in a tightly packed lane. Stronger than he may look but could use some bulk to allow him to body out some room to operate. May need some work anticipating where rebounds will come off but can rebound out of position. Decent jump shooter, not afraid to take the big shot but jump shooting is not his strength, not a bad stroke just seems to need more confidence in it. Sets smart screens. My gut tells me he is not going to be a stretch guy but lets wait and see how his spending a ton of days putting up a ton of shots helps his shooting.

Leaky - you already know, the only chink in his armor is jump shooting if not for that he would be the best wing in the country. May be the best defender in the country, especially for his position.

Nichel - Right there with Puff as a jump shooter, feet are a little slow, average athletics and maybe average ball handles, not bad for a 4 but I don't see it as a wing. Like Puff, he leaves it all out on the court, does not take plays off has that refuse to back down trait that I really love. I personally see a lot of Brady Manek and Luke Maye in his game where will and motor tends to defeat athletism. You would have preferred to have seen him play against stronger competition but he did all you can ask a kid to do when facing weaker level competition, he dominated, set the state of Virginia scoring record and that state has had a long history of great scorers. Has his work cut out for him to get much PT with all the bodies we have at the 4 but we will see how much he earns from practice. Once he adjusts to this level of play, folks we will have a guy fans will love. His key is working on getting his shot release a little bit quicker and not lose accuracy, does a pretty good job of getting in to his shooting motion during the catch, can shoot off the catch or off the dribble, nice array of fade aways that can translate to the college game.

I’m in agreement with all of that, David. Gonna be fun to have an experienced team, yet a team with a lot of youthful exuberance. We have a lot of guys who can play multiple positions and I always feel that’s a good thing. We were fortunate with injuries until the FF, can’t expect that next season. We should have much improved depth if Hubert uses it, and I am confident he will.

And there you go. Go Heels!

I bring this topic back up now after Walton’s decision to go to the portal. If there is one seasoned and proven player who can shoot the rock better than Laz can especially against Carolina then sign him but this is a easy choice if the big man wants to come to Chapel Hill and earn a championship ring…

Was there a reason his name has been mentioned as a portal transfer to begin with? I hope we get him but it looks to me like he never had a desire to leave ND? Did I miss something?
He is testing the waters for pro ball. Some reports that he may go overseas where a healthy offer has been given. If he returns to college ball the option of returning to ND or the portal?

Today is the deadline though if he wants to keep the transfer option.

Would it be tampering or some other violation for people to contact Lasz? Could Hubert do it? Could some NIL person do it? Or are there still rules against that?

Thanks for the info. I had no idea 🤷‍♂️

If he enters the portal, then decides to stick with ND, I imagine Brey would welcome him back. Or would he?

Lasz's numbers are great. So why isn't he showing up on the mocks (or is he?). A little slow? Not that strong?

I might not burn a 1st round pick on him, but if I could get him in the middle of the second round, you bet. Ditto for Manek.

Wait....did Nate enter the portal?

I not concerned even a little because with so many options, I am confident Hubs will get us a great addition!

Yeah, that does kind of make it a moot point...

The Notre Dame 6’10 senior is so versatile can score both inside and outside and is a solid rebounder….We have all seen him light up Carolina over the years and having a big experienced player like Manek showed last year who can lead by example would and could be the last piece to the puzzle and especially now that Dawson Garcia has decided to go to another team closer to home.

Yes there will be tons and tons of players in the portal who offer a bunch of good things but to me this is a no brainer and a perfect fit to come in and contribute right away…

Hope Coach Davis and his staff see the same opportunity that I see to replace the one position that UNC needs to fill this year…
NOT IN THE PORTAL.

I see that Lasz is returning to ND.

Apparently they lose their big guy in the middle, Atkinson, and their PG, Hubb, but have a solid incoming class including a good-shooting transfer.

They may be thin inside, but they could be good. They have a bunch of 40%+ 3pt shooters, so on any given night....

ND is well coached and will be their usual problem that can rise up and beat you on any night they find you slipping. UNC at its best could stomp them and if they have a bad day could lose by double digits!
