Who are some names you would like to see take over the program…Mack would basically have to win out imo to keep his job…Truth be told I don’t think this team wins another game…

Not likely. I do not see a top desired SEC coordinator taking the UNC job unless no SEC HC is open and he definitely wants an HC job for 2025.

I would say the only one even remotely possible out of those 4 would be Monken IMO

Unfortunately I don’t have any other names off the top of my head right now with the new age of college athletics upon us

Bob Chesney - HC JMU

Will Stein - OC Oregon. Louisville native with long family ties to the UofL and its football. As Brohm is also a beloved native son who almost certainly will not leave Louisville, Stein can get back close to home as HC at some ACC school.

Texas ST HC G. J. Kinne is another very tough TX native who I think can be a first rate HC. But he might be best served by rising through the ranks in and near TX.

I am going to put Ok ST HC Mike Gundy down because I like that he said that CFB can be saved if someone like Mack Brown or Nick Sagan were made CFB Commissioner. Unless that were the only way to get rid of Mack, I would want Saban for that job. But Gundy suggesting anything that could save us from more Mack aging makes Gundy nearly heroic to me. Plus he has won against the odds at Ok St.

Two questions that should be asked of candidates in first phone interview: 1) How would you try to do for UNC in your 1st year what Curt Ciugnetti is doing in his first year at IU? 2) How would you get UNC right in the thick of the ACC race by your 3rd season?

Sumrall for sure imo and also little less sure about Chadwell stay where they are at until they get an SEC gig at a “football” school

Sumrall did not play at a football school. He played at UK. His most important assistant coach days were not at a major football school, but at Tulane. All that tells me that he should feel very much at Home at UNC.

Major SEC programs do not hire football HCs because they won 2 Sunbelt championships. Sumrall has never been an SEC coordinator. Nor has Chadwell. When Bill Dooley came to UNC, he was far better placed to get a solid SEC job than either of those guys is now. Florida, for example, will not have either on a short list. UGA DC Glenn Schumann will be.

We can throw around lots of names, but my question is how much can we/are we willing to pay for a top-notch coach and comparable assistants. That and NIL money will determine the future of our football program, IMO.

Top notch that is already proven with big winning in a P5 is one thing. Younger top notch guy from lesser conferences is another thing, much less expensive. UNC is never going to outbid an SEC or BT school for a HOT coordinator like Schumann, nor even for a guy like Minnesota's PJ Fleck.

So I think all time and energy should be spent in identifying and signing the best G5 HC to rebuild UNC football to the top of the ACC. There are several promising candidates: Monken-Army, Chadwell - Liberty, Chesney- JMU, Silverfield - Memphis, Sumrall - Tulane, Odom - UNLV. Interview all of them extensively. Give an assignment at close of 1st brief phone interview to devise plans on how to equal in the 1st year at UNC what Cignetti is doing in his 1st year at IU and then how to have UNC fighting at the very top of the ACC to win the Championship by Year 3.

Any of them who wilts away from doing that is not worth hiring.

Nothing would surprise me about how stupid UNC can be in keeping a coach that should have already been sent packing. If they announce they are giving Mack a 3 year extension because he cares for players with cancer like none other, I will not be surprised. If they announce that mack is getting an extension because he jumped on Tony Bennett's retirement to hire him, a defensive genius, to be an analyst to improve the UNC football defense, I will not be surprised.

this should be bubba’s be all end all hire…been pretty fortunate since butch to be honest…m/w basketball, football, baseball, field hockey, probably m/w soccer, etc.

KU has fallen backwards this year to a typical Jayhawk 1-5. The KU OC the past couple years left for Penn St, ahwihc is un defeated. It may be that the old OC was THE key to KU winning with Leipold as HC.

Chadwell knows the Carolinas and VA inside out.

I think Dan Mullen may want to get back to coaching, and after tonight I think he is licking his chops about the ACC. He sounded about the bACC tonight like almost all other ESPN announcers do about the SEC.

I really like Jon Sumrall because he has experience at a basketball school as player and assistant, experience at an Elite school as both assistant and HC, and he has won 2 conference championships in 2 competed seasons as HC.
