OOTB's Political Thread . ..

I never said I was smart. And, I'm not sure how smart I think I am. My gauge broke.

Do you wish to talk facts or not? I’m good either way.
You mean like the fact that "The Left has no sense of humor?" That kind of fact? That's opinion, and it's a false opinion at that. So, be good either way. I still love you.

Of course that is an opinion.

You are the one who wanted to talk factually about the significant discrepancy between the high number of liberal comedians as opposed to the low number of conservative comedians.

Jesus but you are being a bore. One more chance and then adios for me.

So now we’ve got Tim Allen, Foxworthy and Larry. Anyone else besides the three stooges?

Dude, I don't even know what the hell you're wanting to debate.

Foxworthy has made me laugh quite a few times.

And, Jerry Clower used to make me laugh A LOT as a kid!

Foxworthy is one of the most prolific comics ever. Can’t knock him there. I just figured we’d get a few more examples...

I didn’t want to debate anything.

You are the one who wished to debate my opinion that the left has no sense of humor. And your first attempt at debate was to cite the much higher number of liberal comedians. My contention was that this statistic proved nothing. You then went off the rails.

Either get back to your attempted point or don’t. I’m good either way.

I'm sure there will be a ton of new white, well-fed comics making a killing at making other smug, well-fed white guys laugh at the misfortunes of whiny liberals.

Nah, old well-fed white guys are pretty much the only people you can make fun of in the current climate without getting some "-ist" label. So they'll need to continue to be the butt of jokes.

Please enlighten us with more of your vast worldly knowledge. Or whatever your professors told you to think...either way is the same.

And old, well-fed white guys dont care if they are the butt of jokes by the people who make them the butt of jokes. It actually entertains them.

And, that's a shame. Everything should be fair game to make jokes about. EVERYTHING! It matters how you construct the joke and how you intended it to be funny, and if enough people find it funny, I guess.

I get tons of grief from MY "liberal friends" for laughing at Carlin, or quoting Carlin... or others who are risque and use words like "retard" in their act. Or, if my comments are "offensive" because I used a word that is inappropriate. See, THAT is what I think @UNC71-00 means by the "left has no sense of humor." Certain ones are offended by so much. They take things too seriously. It's meant to be funny, it was intended to be an exaggeration, but they aren't equipped to see it that way. Or, at best, they wish it people were more sentsitive like they are.

ETA: I don't find those sensitive people to be what I consider liberal. They're just uptight. In fact, in that sense, they're conservative and don't even know it. Liberal means letting go, being free. Conservative means uptight and rigid.

Most of the uptight people who walk out of comedy shows are conservatives who get offended when a stand up makes a joke about the Bible or the military.

There are tons of liberal comics who make fun of PC. Rogan, Burr, Ricky Gervais and Louis CK all immediately come to mind. Joe Rogan arguably did the best stand up bit of the last decade about Bruce Jenner and the kardashians and it was far from PC

PC is an abomination. But it is largely considered a "liberal" entity. Rogan is pretty funny. I have a George Carlin channel on my Pandora and he comes up occasionally. A comic that I don't find funny is Patton Oswalt. He's just not that funny to me.

And, I'm sure that people, especially in the South, or rural areas, will be sensitive to making fun of the church, or military, or Trump. But, I doubt many church people go to comedy clubs. Just a hunch. A friend of mine does stand-up and he is from Central. He recently had a heart attack (only 43). Anyway he does a ton of Trump stuff and Bible stuff.

I agree that it’s largely considered that. Conservatives are every bit as PC as liberals though. You can even kneel during the wrong song or they get their panties in a bunch. That’s PC too. Just a different brand of it

That's more of the two polarities not being definitive and lapping-over into one another. The whole liberal OR conservative thing is BS to me. People are far more alike than they are different.

Agreed. I'm usually just on the opposite side of those people. I wouldn't say that makes me a conservative.

It’s a spectrum. And social conservatism/liberalism doesn’t always line up with economic theory either.

The PC police on the “left” can be thought of as the “conservative left” or the “regressive left.” My analogy for conservatism is you establish a box, like “traditional values” then try to shut down anything or anyone outside of that box. The regressive, or conservative left do exactly that, they just use a different box than the conservative right.

I'm conservative about the food I eat, my tastes in music, and other aspects of daily life where "I like what I like and I don't have any interest in new things."

I don't like NFL games in London and Mexico City. I don't like expansion teams. I like certain things the way they've always been.

There ya go. I'm pretty conservative about music. If there isn't a guitar involved, then I'm probably not interested. I hate rap and EDM.

I'm in control of those things, however!

I think that is one reason why politics is appealing, or holds some kind of spell over people. The results are outside of their control. Almost like a sports fan. We like to say "we" with teams we support. We include ourselves in groups we don't really belong. And, then somehow feel like we have a stake in it, or we enjoy the wins and suffer the loss. It's weird.

We have little-to-no control over what happens in our government. I want to say we have no control, but I'll refrain.

We elect the government. We absolutely have some control over how it functions. If people stepped out of their partisan bubbles for long enough, then politicians would have to act in our interests, even if only out of fear that they would lose their job. But most people are just caught up in the red vs blue paradigm, and don't care if they get screwed over. As long as its their team doing the screwing, that's good enough.
