Panhandlers

Completely agree with this. I've actually gone this route many times. I've seen people I know are struggling to make ends meet and have called up the power company and paid their bill for them without ever telling them and never mentioning to anyone that I had done that. I don't like getting credit for stuff like that...just like having the peace of mind that they'll have the lights on. On the other point, I have gone out of my way to teach people how to create and manage their own budgets, etc. It makes more sense to know that someone is learning how to not repeat the same financial mistakes that got them into the mess they were in...assuming it wasn't simply spending it on "hookers & blow."
I would like this post, but you said you don't like getting credit for stuff like that.

I give them something every time I possibly can. I like giving them help because it makes me feel good just knowing I am able to do it.

I guess I know too many people beating the system. If they were asking for food, I would in a heartbeat. I will tell you this,if I had to resort to that, my kids would be absolutely starving. It's not that I don't have compassion, it just that I do the trust their situation. Ive been down and homeless before. I made it thru without any assistance from the government or begging for money. I found a job and went from there. I know some are in real trouble. A hundred years ago, they would have worked or starved. Come to think of it, in those days you either worked or starved period.

I guess for me there is a major difference between asking for help and asking for money.

Panhandlers here in FL are really bad. They are everywhere and is impossible to discern who is really in need v/s scam, drug users, etc.

I remember as a student at UNC I got panhandled everyday on way to class. I learned them to ask them for money first and it really confused them. Most got pissed and walked away.

My rule today is I never give money or anything of monetary value that can be used to buy or trade for drugs or alcohol. So, I like the idea of McDonald's gift cards, except that could be traded for cash to buy drugs/alcohol.

I have am on I95 and I4 a lot and get panhandled at gas stations often. I will buy gas if asked, but only by going in store myself and paying in advance for gas and collecting refund if tank gets full early.

This week I was panhandled directly twice. Once at fast food drive through. Lady pulled beside me in a car and said she needed food and gas and was crying. I told her to park, let me finish my order, and I would go inside with her and buy her food then go with her to gas station across the street and pay for gas. I made it clear she was not going to get cash fro me. She agreed, but when I drove around to meet her she was gone. So, that was a scam.

Second, was after church we stopped at a food truck to get some lunch. A dude approached asking how far Wal mart was. (I knew this was a scam because this Wal Mart direction thing has been tried on me before). I told him it was about 5 miles away and proceed to place my order at food truck. He kept trying to interrupt me so I forcefully told him I would talk to him when I was done. He got pissed and started flipping me off and walked over to another truck that pulled up and asked for money. Those idiots gave it to him and he then started flipping me off and waving cash in the air. I thought he was going to start an altercation and seemed very unstable. Luckily the police pulled in and he took off.

So, today I am going to get my Concealed Cary permit. I took the class last week.

Just last night I was pulling into the gas station and saw a dude talking to another customer pumping gas, and figured he's coming my way next. But he ended up hitting up a woman a few bays over, and... (BTW, he was smoking)... she gave him some cash, and the dude went immediately to the counter of the convenience store and appeared to be buying more cigs. Dude, at least wait until the woman has pumped her gas and left the store.

Regardless, my kind-hearted daughter has mentioned an elderly lady that is always on a corner that she sees on her way to work. She frequently will buy the lady some food, coffee, etc. She even picked up a poncho for the lady to give her when it was raining the other day (hopefully she had an easier time with the poncho than W). I am very cynical when it comes to panhandlers, but at least my daughter isn't just forking over money to her.

My wife was approached by a lady at Walmart holding a sign saying she was deaf and could not talk. It was asking for any spare money or change. She tries to follow my rule of thumb about giving money away. She said she felt really bad because this one looked authentic. I told her to ride thru the parking lot and when she comes close to blow the car horn. If she looks or turns then you have your answer. She did and the woman did the flinch. So she stopped and gave a 5 dollar bill.

Hahaha. That's one way to handle it.
