Look I'm not even fond of the idea, but y'all are being ridiculous about this. The University might have "gave the honor" of retiring Phil's number, but it was PHIL who worked his ass off and did what he did to have his number retired. PF was a great player and an icon to the UNC, but there is only one player who can claim the title for UNC's greatest. That's Psycho T. His resume trumps EVERYONE.

People wore 12 before Phil, but you dont remember them. When you think of a number 12 Carolina blue jersey you think of Phil Ford, no one else. 23 you think of MJ, no one else, etc. That is THEIR number. But if you're going to make the argument it's UNC's number then doesnt the University trump the player, all players? So what's best for the university trumps everything. That would actually be an argument for trying to land what could be a superstar player since we haven't had one since Vince Carter.

But again it is read that PHIL FORD himself brought it up. We all know Roy wouldn't offer such a thing. So heelmanwilm you can go tell Phil Ford to his face he's an abomination for bringing it up. Afterwards come back to the board and tell us how that goes.

FOR A OAD? Noooooooooo. I would like to see what Zion could do in at UNC, but Phil Ford is considered the best PG, in a long list of UNC great PG. Sorry it is way to much. I think Zion willl be a great player, but I see him struggling early in his college career.

All i will say is dean or roy woulda/would walk off the job before un retiring the number of arguably the greatest unc player ever in order to entice a recruit. That number represents a players legacy. It is not retired lightly. To trade it for some fking oad OR TO EVEN OFFER IT is an abomination. U dont like how serious i take it? Idgaf. Maybe its cause i’m an alum that was there when ford played. But i guarantee u coach williams opinion is a hell of a lot closer to mine than yours and i’ll leave it with that.

Phil Ford's impact at UNC could not possibly be measured by numbers or a "resume". I know how little history, legacy, honor, and the concept of team before self mean these days, but I am saddened by how many people will denigrate those for whom they still have significance! Instant gratification, the false equivalency of comparing numbers across eras, and the fact that most of our new fans never saw our historical greats play combine to make claims like the one above completely nonsensical! I love Hans with a passion and I also love JB. I think MJ is the greatest of all time for all of bball, but Phil Ford defined and added to the UNC Brand/ legacy more than any other! He will always be associated with DES and his greatest innovations and together they changed college bball. (including forcing several pivotal rule changes). But what a great problem to have: having trouble deciding which great player is the greatest!

If my love for my Tar Heel Family and my strict adherence to the Tar Heel Way is ridiculous, I will celebrate my ridiculous beliefs with pride!

Anyway: I remember the good old days when this board actually discussed bball using things like facts and observations
