Quick stuff (GT game)...

Where is this Hubert Davis.

You know what? This counts as head coaching experience! Definitely qualified to be UNC's head coach! I'm kidding...

Rest of this is unrelated to that video.

I think I chose to wait until the regular season to make any guesses on what this team would be so that's probably why I'm a little more even keel than everyone else. In the preseason, there were people here saying this team was 11 (count em 11!) deep. The only player I had pretty high expectations for was Cade Tyson because I thought if he could really shoot the ball here, it would really help us. And boy have I been wrong about that, lol. And to his credit, Seth has been terrific and I didn't really buy his preseason hype.

The harsh reality of this team right now is they're 5 deep (Cadeau, RJ, Seth, Jackson, and Powell). I'll go 6 to be nice because Withers does show the capability to play well at times. But realistically Powell and Withers are pretty similar right now for different reasons. You don't know what Powell is going to do every game because he's a freshmen and Withers, you have no clue because you haven't had a clue on what he'll do for 5 years now. So this is a 6 deep team right now that has to glue together their 4-5 rotation.

It's a mess right now. I'm one to blame the players first. Unless there's evidence on film that there is absolutely 0 open shots for them, then they have some blame in this too. Make your open layups (Cadeau and RJ) and make your open 3s (literally everyone on the roster). Do the easy things well and the harder things will get easier.

But obviously Hubert deserves a lot of blame and criticism too. Antiquated and outdated offense. And defense? Well, when has UNC really had a defense-first minded culture or mindset? This is a pretty basketball program. Hard to get that culture reversed into a tough, grind it out, 40 minutes of intensity basketball. But... at least he's a UNC guy right?

Welp... that's about as far off-base as one could imagine.

I sincerely hope the players and coaches do not give up as easily as our "fans"!

I expect them to figure it out and not waste time trying to place blame!

When we play with maximum effort, we compete with anyone! When we don't, we can lose to anyone! I think it will eventually click and we will see a run of some fun ball!

BTW: It would be a waste of your valuable time trying to convince me of anything less!

Just wow! Dude you were far less trollish when you were SDung and at least pretending to support the Heels! Please get some professional help because the spiral you are apparently on could be dangerous!

I said we had the potential to be 11 deep and I stand by that! 5 deep is one of the stupidest thing I have ever read on the internet!

About all I would say about this post is that there an be no better example of how we all do have the right to express our opinions, no matter how ignorant they may be to others. That is about the ONLY thing positive I can say about this...😲

Diplomatically put, to say the least.

OK, back to agenda-free discussion: I think you and I both know that if Dean or Roy were handed this team to coach the next game, on like the first three possessions that ball would go INSIDE to JWash with directions to shoot.

I wasn’t referring to you at all. Being 10-11 deep was the common prediction here. Right now, they’re not close.

I also said they’re not all that deep right now so like you I’m opening up to the possibility that more guys will establish consistent roles for this team.

And yea, I do think this team has 5 or 6 players that are semi reliable right now. I don’t know how that’s controversial with what they’ve put on the tape so far.

I actually agree that this team has upside and can play with any team on any given night. They have to play at their A level to do so but I think there’s a lot of variance with this team and that means on the right game they can give the best teams all that they can handle.

But I think what you get as their median game is a pretty inconsistent team that has glaring holes. If you want to say it’s effort dependent, that’s fine. I think it’s more shooting dependent. They can certainly lose to anyone if they aren’t shooting it well or playing hard enough.

And I do think things can get better. The game tape has a lot of minor lack of attention to detail that derails some things. A lot of that is fixable. Some of their issues are not though but I think they’ll be better than what they showed against Ga Tech.

But right now, it looks pretty bad. It looks like they have a limited number of opportunities for good quality wins too. So they’ll have to get some things shored up relatively quickly.

Nate idk what you’ve done to catch hell from a few of these posters but I do find it hilarious that they hate what you post and disregard it, all the while saying some of the same things. May not agree with everything and everyone but we do have common bonds. Some people are just blind with keyboard hate lol

You seem to be confusing  with

Fair enough and I understand for sure. Just observing lol. Y’all tuff on a brother.
Look, I'm gonna put this here becasue I think you'll get it.

1. As you probably know, I have connections to Auburn, and I talked to a friend close to their program today, and he told me that the coach scouting us in Maui (I'm assuming Steven Pearl) had a very easy time of it. Why? Well... here ya go:
We started the season relying on two actions (once we got out of transition) --- our Guards getting "downhill" off perimeter screens and "horizontal" action for wing 3s.
Now, the downhill stuff can be formidable with EC, RJ and Seth, et al (as Bill Self ackowledged) BUT... once we got scouted, teams figured out that our 4/5 guys were basically inert as just screeners or rollers. Thus, defenses could just mostly ignore them. In other words, our three Guards are now playing 3-on-5. BAD NEWS.

2. One of the first things I learned as a coach (including at Dean's clinic) was the necessity of "stressing the rim". Whether it's in the Secondary or half-court, it is ESSENTIAL --- and if you're only doing that with Guards? Welp, yer f***ed. Why? Well, getting the ball to Bigs inside is vital (whether or not they score) because the hardest situation for defenders "seeing man and ball" is when the ball is BEHIND you, as opposed to adjacent to you. Moreover, the highest % 3s come from vertical kick-outs -- it's almost a 60% shot for good shooters --- as opposed to surrounding defenses and passing laterally.

3. Props to @andrew jones --- I happened to catch his last podcast and it is spot-on. He also broached something that I had previously resisted: starting JWash and Lubin together at the 4/5. BUT... we MUST get the rock inside to SCORE.

4. Finally, to our friend @HoopsCoach42 and others, we should all know that capable coaches can get dumb sh** stuck in their heads. That is what is happening now with this staff. So, the question now is whether they can look in the mirror and adjust. All we can do is see what happens tomorrow.....

I agree and I’ve said it all along too. Our lack of go too guys on the inside is killing EC and RJ. EC pushing the limits and tuff passes from over trying by feeling the need to take up slack. RJ? Some of the exact same thing but added pressure of living up to previous hype. And he’s definitely not shooting anywhere close to where needed obviously lol.
I think Ian has done well because of size and athleticism but we need him plus the other two to even think about reaching any kind of attainable goals this year imo. I know the whole team is frustrated, meanwhile water is wet. Maybe it will click for everyone, staff included.
While I think we can win a few games late in the season, with our deficiencies it’s gonna be hard to go far. And I’m usually a glass half full guy but this it tough.

Someday maybe AI will get good enough to answer questions like "How would this roster perform for Coach Bennett?" And similar questions.

Eventually, AI might be good enough to "Show me a game between the 2005 and 2009 Heels." I'd pay for that - assuming they could do a really good job.

Been saying this for a little while. Might not work, but definitely worth a try.

AJ suggested trying JWash at the 4 with Lubin inside. What's your thought on that, @gary-7 ?

Who are you and what have you done with mild-mannered @TPFKAPFS ?

Being 10-11 deep was the common prediction here.
I was one who expressed my expectations of a deep team. Maybe not 11, but 9-10.

But that came with some serious caveats. Let's look at those....

1. RJ would shoot like RJ.

Verdict: not yet.

2. EC would turn the corner and be the guy we expected last year.

Verdict: Mostly true, but still inconsistent.

3. Seth would continue to improve and have the confidence to shoot more.

Verdict: Spot on, and then some.

4. One or both of our hotshot freshman would be starter quality.

Verdict: Looking good. They're still frosh, but both might meet our expectations. Already close.

5. JWash will be strong, have the stamina to play starter minutes, have a good enough motor, and continue to shoot well.

Verdict: Not yet. Not on any of those 4 measures.

6. Withers will improve his consistency and earn a starting role.

Verdict: Better than last year, but not really there. Marginal starter.

7. Lubin will be good enough to start.

Verdict: Not yet.

8. Cade will fit in and continue his 2-year streak of hitting well from deep.

Verdict: Not yet. Not even close, on either measure.

Am I forgetting anyone?
