Quick stuff (UCLA game)...

I'm not here to defend Hubert and say he's this or that... But RJ developed into a pretty good basketball player under Hubert. Seth certainly has developed under Hubert. So I don't think it's accurate to say guys just fail to develop under him. If you want to blame him for the lack of development of Washington or Withers, then fine. I tend to think Washington is a limited player and Withers has been the same player the last 4 seasons so being the same player for this season isn't all that surprising.

I think Hubert's biggest issue when it comes to personnel is he's a mediocre at best talent evaluator. If we're being honest, the vast majority of people overrated Elliot Cadeau in terms of how quickly he would impact UNC basketball. He's a fine player who is developing. There's nothing wrong with that. But he isn't the player that he was advertised as. And Hubert said before this season that that Cadeau would be "unrecognizable" this season. Idk, a lot of his game is pretty recognizable to me, lol.

Now, I tend to think Hubert is one of those people that just overemphasizes positives and that can make some of your quotes sound rather stupid in the future. But this is what he said about some of the players.

Cadeau before this season:
“You won’t recognize him this year. He's worked extremely hard this summer,” said Davis. “He's consistently knocking down threes, mid-range jump shots. The level that I've seen is just the progression of maturity and the leadership. It's just off the charts.”

Withers:
“Jae’Lyn is a versatile big man who can do a number of things really well on both ends of the court. He can consistently make three-pointers, run the floor, post up, attack the offense and create plays off the bounce. He is also an excellent defender and rebounder, exactly what we were looking for at that position. He is a North Carolina kid and we are glad he is back home.”

Wojcik:
“Paxson is a talented basketball player who excels at doing everything on the court at a high level,” Davis said. “He brings consistent perimeter shooting, rebounding and passing from the wing. He will be a great leader for us. We are excited to have Paxson as part of the Carolina Basketball family.”

Washington:
"He's the best shooting big man coming out of high school that I've ever seen."

If those quotes come with a kernel of truth to them, he's a poor talent evaluator. I know the offseason is a time to be irrationally positive, but some of those are lol-worthy.
Don’t forget his quote that Styles and Dunn would be two of the best to play here by the time they get done.

I’m a Hubert fan & mostly in his camp (even though I think Wes is probably the guy), but he had nothing to do with developing RJ or Seth, their “drive, make up, & want to” is the reason they are improved, not Hubert.
Just to play devil's advocate, does that also mean that he has nothing to do with the lack of "developing " of others? Is it their lack of "drive, make up, & want to" not Hubert ?

I’ll just say that I think Hubert is leaving a lot on the table right now. He’s nowhere close to doing the best job he can do with this program.

I agree but to add a culmination of players, fit, culture of basketball in general ie nil and privilege. alwould about to pass out when he reads this lol. I’d also say RJ Davis sucking it up from deep and pressing too hard, EC uncontrolled and reckless at times, Seth shrinking and not being seen on offense until prodded, and bigs being well…., are all factors too. Someone please tag him in this to show I bad mouthed RJ lol. I don’t know how to tag.

I like to debate with adults but since I am forced to try to respond to childishness, I'll simply say my mother taught me that name calling is the last bastion of the immature and the preferred method of the ignorant!

I'll use small words to help:

UNC has issues with coaches learning on the job AND players not executing what is asked. We have bigs who won't take open shots and others who try to do too much. We have peeps getting wide open shots and not dropping them AND peeps forgetting both blocking out and defensive rotations. Coaches were forced to change roles on such things as Zone O because the flash must be a threat and some of our bigs won't even look at the basket.

In any case, I wish all Family a Healthy and Happy Christmas! I pray you are covered in the grace of God and thoroughly enjoy your day!

Or else "RJ developed into a pretty good basketball player under despite Hubert." Or "Seth certainly has developed under despite Hubert."

It's clear they have improved at UNC. It's not clear how much of that is thanks to coaching vs the players' own determination to succeed.

Yeah, sure, you can say that about any player. But take Seth.... He starts off as a freshman looking pretty good. Then he hits the UVa game and gets the wind knocked out of his sails and loses confidence. How does Hubert respond? Seth is basically an afterthought the rest of the year and starts his sophomore year looking scarcely better than his freshman year.

Seth as a junior is looking about the way many of us thought he would look as a soph. How is that good development?

This is an argument no one can win. I mean who knows how he would have developed elsewhere? But I give more credit to RJ and Seth than I do to the coaching staff.

Things work different now days than how they used to. For example, when Dean was our coach, you saw players end their season and begin the next one strongly improved, it was as clear as the nose on your face. Mike went from Mike Jordan as a freshman to Air Jordan as a soph, went from a very very good freshman to the best player in college basketball in a single off season, amazing. Now MIke was just a different breed of human but you also realized our coaching staff taught the skill that allowed that special sauce he already had to grow greatness.

Now day we have NIL and players can afford to jet around the country in the off season, attend this camp or that clinic with NBA players and skill specialists, there is a LOT of outside the program development going on now days in the off season. The gauge now is for me more a look at how guys improve DURING season at least as much as off season. When I see players fal off their early season production it is a red flag for me. I see fall off at this still early point of the season from Jalen, JWit, Cadeau, and Seth? I didn't include Tyson because he didn't play for UNC last season so I see him as Lubin as working to fit in early on, same with Drake and Jack. Now is Seth's defense I will mention what I have not seen mentioned, he is playing with a wrap on his hand, we now have RJ, Drake, as well as Seth playing with wrapped hands, we do know what that means right, dislocated digits and those wraps look like the digits in question are thumbs, important digits for shooters or finishers?

I would as well question how you are developing players that are having to play out of position, you do have to do that at times but how are you developing Drake playing him at the 4, how are you developing Jalen not making him a shooter, or having JWit pump up treys from the deep corner?
