Roy & Timeouts

Watch a NBA game, any NBA game, and you will see a coach call a TO if he doesn't like what he's seeing from a team of professional basketball players!
Back in Dean's day there were only 3 TOs, not the 5 there used to be, now reduced to 4 in a game, with a "use it or lose it" in the first half.
As mentioned above when the score was 28-18, State called TO, then went on a 19-0 run.Obviously that's not gong to happen all the time, but maybe it can't hurt! If nothing else it might "cool off" the other team, and quite the fans down, if on the road.

My advice for people expecting Roy to start calling time outs... forget it. Embrace his choice and move on. As I said, I never expect a time out to be called... NEVER. I've gotten to where I am no longer angry or even remotely upset when teams go on a run in-game. I'm almost conditioned to think that TO's are only for the other teams.

Whatever other coaches do, that's fine. After 3 NCAA titles, 4 NCAA Championship games, 5 FF teams, and I dunno how many ACC regular season titles and tournament titles... I don't care if he never calls another timeout. I've resolved that Williams knowledge of coaching the game, and more specifically HIS TEAM, far surpasses my own.

My opinion is,and has been for a long time, that RW is an average game coach.
I think Roy might be the a top 10 "before the game" coach in the country. I agree with this in game rating... and if he's an average in game coach, the importance of calling at timeout is probably less for Roy than a great in game coach.

As the games get more important I wonder if Roy will use some TOs to rest a few of the starters at various times since our bench is not as strong at this point than it has been in the past. Would avoid the run against us not because he will tell them anything important or different but just to give the guys a chance to get a breath and legs so they can play more minutes than normally they could.

I have said over and over again that when Roy gets to heaven he and Dean will sit down and see who has the most timeouts with them. :) Just about as certain as the sun will rise. Louder I scream TO the less likely one will be called.

Roy has frustrated me for years by his timeout philosophy but here's what I've come to realize. Every year his lack of calling timeouts will probably cost us a game but it will also help us win 2 or 3 games that we probably should have lost. I prime example was Arkansas last year. They didn't panic because they are forced to pull themselves out of tough situations because of who their coach is.

I think you're right 99. Roy and Coach Smith both were willing to lose a game in December to teach lessons for March. They believe not calling a TO to stop runs teaches kids self reliance and builds confidence not only in individual players but in teammates and in the system. End game TO's are unneeded because UNC practices end game situations all year and the kids already know what to do. Calling TO only gives the opponent an opportunity to set their plan and to rest.
Both Coach Smith and Coach Williams felt this was an advantage and after so much success I now have to agree.

Saw on Twitter but haven't verified that Roy didn't call ANY timeouts during the 3-games-in-5-days gauntlet. In every game there were runs when I'm sure every fan was calling for one. There's a method to his madness. The guys now know that they can rise to a challenge like that, that they can weather runs and get things back under control, and that they can do it without looking to Roy to hit some magical reset button.

Disclaimer: I was yelling for timeouts as loudly as anyone at various times during those games.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but this blows my mind. He has won a handful of games this year alone with his in game coaching. He by far outcoached K the other night. He wouldn't have accomplished the staggering numbers he has without being above average coach esp with not getting the to 10 talent each year.

I think some of us forget or fail to realize that coaching doesn't always come from timeouts. Coaching is done every second of the game on the sideline. Roy coaches his butt off every game and makes adjustments that give us the best chance to win.

Don't plenty of people here think Coach K is a pretty average coach? If it's only about accomplishments, then we're playing the results and that's it.

I've honestly given up complaining about it after the game. I'll yell at the TV "CALL TIMEOUT" but after the emotion settles, it's who Roy is. He lets his guys get out of jams.

I genuinely think this helps us in March. How many tight games did we win last tourney? Ark, UK, Oregon, and Gonzaga.

Good thing they put average coaches in the HOF! Good thing opposing coaches threw so many games so Roy could get in the 800 win club and have the best active win percentage too! It does my heart good to learn that all the other coaches and teams would just lay down so Roy could win 3 Nattys! Humanity is going to be just fine!

The only thing surprising about comment is that anyone was surprised the troll said it, lol!
