Roy's camp... (first pick-up game)

That was the first thing I noticed about him. Looked very awkward and uncoordinated. And Hands are very hard to improve. Joel James comes to mind. So frustrating to watch him constantly fumbling easy bounce passes.
We hear about guys spending hours in the gym putting up shots. But we never hear about guys spending hours catching passes. Does that happen? And if not, why not?

I'm sure we have guys who would love to spend time making those passes and making them tricky so that the receiver has to concentrate.

Joel Berry should be All-American, is a NPOY darkhorse, and is our best PG since Lawson; Jalek Felton will be one of our best shooters, finishing in the high 30s, plus he's our most talented passer since Marshall; Johnson will break Jackson's 3pt record from last year if he gets similar minutes; Robinson will develop into a very good scorer and all-around player; Brooks will out-play his ranking and contribute quality minutes early (primarily because of his mobility, length, BBIQ, and patience); Coby White is the best player we've recruited since Jackson and will be a star as soon as he's allowed to play his natural aggressive style

Better?

I don't only say negative things, but I don't feel the need to equivocate on the negative things, so they stand out more.

Name players who started with bad hands and finished with good hands. I'll name players who started with bad hands and finished with bad hands. We'll see whose list is longer.

Coordination and touch are talents that are really hard to improve. Not impossible, but it's a hard needle to move. That's part of why Kennedy was highly thought of - even though he was super fat, he demonstrated great hands. Those hands (and instincts and mass) allowed him to dominate the glass. Joel James didn't have great hands and was mediocre on the glass despite having a similar (superior) physical profile.

Nonsense, just nonsense! Look, you want us to first start with your desired premise that Huffman is uncoordinated and has bad hands. You then work your way backwards not to prove that he does but to retort anothers lack of agreement in your starting point.

I watched a vid last night of Huffman, it was a bunch of him catching passes and dunking, he sure as heck caught a bunch of passes and flushed them for a kid we should all assume can not catch a ball passed to him. How can that be if we have to start from the premise that he can not catch a pass thrown at him?

Kids at this level and especially big men do tend to struggle catching passes, vast majority of the time it is because the game is to fast for them, they rush their moves, they have to learn to settle down and take their time, that was exactly what the issue was with Joel, it was Montross early on as well. It is a speed of the game issue and a confidence issue, Desmond for example was never confident when the ball hit his hands, he was almost scared for the ball to get in to his hands. So when it did he panicked, never got past that point, Hicks was not real comfortable with the ball as a frosh, greatly improved as he settled in and grew his confidence.

No, Huffman is not a jump shooter, likely more due to having really big hands than a lack of coordination, shooting touch by the way is not always a given even with very coordinated kids. WE need Huffman to rebound and stick back or pass out, defend with that big body, block shots as he has shown able to do (amazing for a kid that is being accused of being uncoordinated).

how should we start from assuming backwards that a pass cant be caught but assuming that of which to assume a pass wont be caught you should tell us all it shouldnt be.Nonsense? I say so. Maybe not if we dont presume an uncatchable pass to be passable.

What, ya may want to sober up and try to figure out what the heck it was you were trying to say with this post...

Ehhhh...sometimes. Kwame Brown never improved his hands and trainers for damn sure tried for years and years. Some guys just have bad hands..not saying Huff does or doesn't, just sometimes that is an unteachable skill.

No, Huffman is not a jump shooter, likely more due to having really big hands

Look at MJ's hands to immediately prove this argument invalid.

Jonas, medicine ball, go a long way improving hands.

You doubting Thomas's need to watch.

I sure hope our freshman bigs aren't half as bad as some seem to think. I've heard none of them can walk and chew bubblegum at the same time. They're 3*'s you know.

As I said, I've seen nothing to indicate that Huff doesn't have good hands. In fact, just the opposite. When I look at vids on bigs, one of the first things I look at is whether or not they can catch the ball in traffic. Huff can. The last thing I'm worried about is his hands.

I understand that some of you are worried about our young bigs because they aren't highly ranked. But they are big, have good hands, and are athletic. Our staff can teach the rest.

Any list of who participated in the first game? If Marvin and Jawad played, it was still a good win, especially since we didn't have Kenny/Jalek/Manley/Brooks.

If you want a Tar Heel comparison to Huffman, it's Brendan Haywood. That's Huffman's ceiling. He's nowhere near what Haywood was coming in as a freshman.

Haywood isn't a great comparison. Huffman doesn't come close a in height (7'1.5"), length (7'6.5"), reach (9'5.5"), or weight (266). Haywood is an enormous human.

Comparing one player to another is never a good idea. Each is his own guy and has his own strengths and weaknesses. Anxious to see how he does.

63% shooting and only averaging 12 pts tells me he didn't take a lot of shots. Maybe Mr. Dean Smith was holding him back.

I'd be elated if Huff comes in and maximizes his own skill set! He will be a great Tar Heel and I predict he will grow into a fan favorite. His motor and aggressiveness alone are going to be something we have rarely seen recently and he will soon be one others are compared to I predict!

Combining his size, strength, and motor with Roy's big whispering AND Jonas' incredible strength/conditioning work might just create a monster IF we are patient!

And we will forgive you when you are wrong. ............................... maybe

Must be peeps on ignore because I thought you were saying you would forgive me if Huff wasn't a fan favorite, lol!

I thought everyone in this thread was on the same page that we like Huff and if he turns into Brendan then we will be thrilled....what else was said?
