Seventh Woods next season

Let's just enjoy the moment all summer and bask in the glow of that championship trophy!!
I'll try. But I'm a worrier. So I'll be worrying about who's leaving, why we don't have any offers to bigs in either 2018 or 2019, and so on.

The idiot politicians have already knocked our good news out of the news cycle. And sadly, the last few stories I read were about the violations crap.

I posted this on the Premium board and will post it here:

A critical thing that happened in the final few games was a couple of player substitutions made by Roy. In the Kentucky game he put Stillman in after Seventh received a couple of fouls. Stillman came in and did a good job. I'm shouting at Roy through the TV screen saying this..

"Roy, we have to win this NCAA title and Stillman is a better option to spell Berry for these final games. Seventh has 3 more years and he will be okay".

What did Roy do? Well, in the next game Seventh came in on the first Berry substitution signaling to Seventh that nothing had changed.

Now, what do you think is going to happen this off season? That one move may seem insignificant to us, but it's the type of move that will make Seventh work his butt off this summer. Seventh is just as quick as Fox (Kentucky), but his skills are not refined.

This one move by Roy (sticking with Seventh) may be a defining moment in Seventh career at UNC. It means nothing now, but we may look back at this decision by Roy.

Seventh is just as quick as Fox.....???....uh, he wasn't Dexter Strickland fast, but..time will tell...let's see if Berry returns then he is still 3rd on depth chart

Coach may have Berry move off the ball some to take advantage of his shooting with Woods at point

Similar to how Paige played off guard with Berry running point two years ago

With Berry back next year Coach will have many options or combinations to play with 1-3

Seventh is probably a better bet to shine in his jr. year .. he is still very raw on many levels but I'm sure he will show some good improvement next season if he puts in the time in the off season. Very quick .. good ball handling potential .. just needs to get a better understanding of the UNC system and stop forcing so much. Glad he's here !!

You really didn't just.. yes you did.
Wow.

Before you go there HECK NO I am not comparing Hubert to Rush. Just the situations,, Hubert was told he could come but he would ride the pine ............................ by Dean GOAT Smith. Give all the kids a chance, you just never know.

^^^^^^

No you don't, Mike. We have a prime example of how someone can greatly exceed expectations in Luke Maye.

As for 7th, he has the requisite skills to become a very good player for us. He struggled at times, like most freshmen do. But as his shooting, ball handling, and decision making improve, he will be a vital part of our team by his junior year when he will be getting a lot of PT. If he works super hard, he might get a lot of PT next year, especially if Joel leaves. I'm very glad we have him.

The KEY question in my mnd re 7th and ANY player year to year HOW HARD will HE work during the summer??

Look at this years team.... JJ and Luke stand as prime examples. Hours and hours and hours of shooting, dribbling ,PRACTICE and refining their games led us to the title IMO. BOTH of them recognized the need to improve their games and help the team .They both did that VERY well

It was at times lonely and boring work but it HAD to be done and they did it.

Will 7th??? let's all hope so......

At worse he becomes a better Nate Britt. That ain't bad. Kid was a 4 star recruit with crazy athleticism. I believe Roy can teach him more about the game and how he can use his elite speed and athleticism to our and his advantage.

My mind has never changed about 7th Woods he is going to be very important as we go through these lean recruiting years. By Wood's Junior and Senior year he will be the topic good or bad of this entire board. Berry coming back would help a lot, but Woods game will have to be ready in another year or we are in trouble.

Bingo. He now knows how much better the comp is at this level, as well as what the staff expects of him. I'm sure he now knows just how hard he is going to have to work to succeed. It's why we often see a significant improvement between players' freshman and sophomore years. Roy will give him a list of things to work on in the offseason, 7th's work ethic will largely determine his future success because he undoubtedly has the physical ability.

I'd love to see 7th at the 2. I bet he would flourish. Not sure if the pg thing is gonna work
I think he's more of a combo guard, much like Joel and Marcus before him. And much like Jalek will be, IMO. I think 7th/Joel or 7th/Jalek would form a dynamic backcourt.

IMO, he will far surpass Nate due to his far superior athletic ability. He can be a lockdown defender, and that could be a key to earning PT next year in a very crowded backcourt. As he learns to play fast, but under control, the sky is the limit for 7th.

I see him as a Dexter Strickland type. He needs to work his butt off in the offseason and become a lockdown defender.

Comparing Nate, Seventh and Dex as freshman (Pomeroy numbers):

Code:
       Nate 7th Dex
ORtg 88.6 74.2 91.0
2pt% .377 .312 .488
3pt% .250 .222 .235
FT% .794 .622 .692
eFG% 37.7 31.6 45.8
Arate 18.4 23.4 19.9
TOrate 27.1 38.6 28.3
Stls% 3.0 4.0 2.9

If Berry stays, Seventh might not.

Seventh might go if Berry stays? So instead of playing some backup minutes, he would rather sit out a year and not play? I am not saying it's BS, I just don't understand that logic if he does go.

I wouldn't want to sit out a year either, but a quick glance around college basketball shows that transfer rates are at all-time highs. Carolina isn't an anomaly, it is the anomaly in this regard. We haven't had a transfer since Drew and the Wears. Every other major program has had transfers since, it seems.

So by the logic and the norm of today's college basketball, it's certainly a possibility that Seventh could opt out if Berry stays because he might feel this upcoming season should be his year to gain major minutes before Felton gets caught up to speed.

I feel it is a legitimate thing to consider, though apparently some disagree.

Per this article on ncaa.org, roughly 40% of all Division I men's basketball players who enter school directly out of high school depart their initial school after their sophomore year. 40%.

The only sport they mention having a higher transfer rate than MBB is men's soccer. The article doesn't explain this, but the main reason men's soccer has a high transfer rate is because in that sport you are immediately eligible after transferring. You don't have to sit out a year. So it isn't this crazy, upside-down world concept.

That being said, hopefully SW stays right here and continues to improve and carves out a role for himself here, whatever that ultimately ends up being.

Damn, after all these years as a fan base, people still don't get that trying to come into Carolina as a PG is probably the most difficult thing any of our kids face? Seventh is gonna be fine. I can remember many a frosh PG who has struggled in their first year as a Carolina PG. Joel Berry wasn't that long ago gents!

We have a log jam at SG, now we just need one of them to prove he can shoot!

IMO, 7th needs to concentrate on becoming a PG. He certainly has the quickness to beat opposing PG's off the dribble, but he really needs to work on tightening his handle up. He also possesses the quickness to stay in front of opposing PG's. With effort and work, he will become a very good defender. So while I agree that he should be working on his jumper every day, I think improving his ball handling and his defense are the keys to him earning significant PT next season.

If he has a pro future, it will be as a PG. He probably knows that. Even if Joel returns, Jalek is going to command PT, he's just that good, but I'd like to see him at SG. I think Brandon will get backup minutes at SF and perhaps SG. Kenny will get first shot at the SG spot. So I think 7th's best shot is at PG.

Always enjoy your post, but the first part about why go with White over Woods.

You go with White because he has final four experience. 7th will be a big part of team starting even next year. 3 years is laughable, we will be terrible if ut takes 7th 3 more years

Seventh is not a natural point guard..he is learning the position and learning how RW's philosophy/preferences..same situation-Dexter Strickland, virtually same athleticism...another little forgotten nugget is Theo Pinson-point forward !..his skills allow for the pg to become a shooter..the offense won't flow well late in the shot clock if the pg won't or can't shoot the perimeter jumper
