...and I'm going to do this a bit differently since it's just intrasquad.

Random player observations:
- Tyson was a bit nervous with his shot, made up for it with being active in transition. No worries --- he can stroke it.
- Brown looked more polished than I expected --- good sign for the future
- As I expected, Seth is asserting himself (as in practice) with more confidence --- also, really enjoyed seeing him calmly run his team when EC was out
- Lubin and Claude were as expected --- physical and scrappy
- Wash needs to touch the ball more (see below) but is effective when he does
- Jackson and Powell flashed the exact sort of stuff I mentioned in the last preview thread that will make them major parts of the rotation. Once they get their court "bearings", watch out. Powell's Len Bias bursts stand out already
- RJ is still RJ, and hopefully just got a scare and some soreness
- One of my guys played pickup with Withers this summer and was on him about dribbling less and not getting loose with the rock. When he runs the floor and gets to the rack his athleticism is next-level. Nice knock-down of a transition 3, BTW.
- Best of all, this was a glimpse of the Eliot Cadeau Show. I wasn't keeping stats but he easily scored in double figures, handed out a half-dozen or so dimes (and more potentials) and had complete control over the flow. EXACTLY what we need.

Scheme observsations:
(with the caveat that it was a simple scrimmage and we'll hafta wait til we play someone else to learn more)
- I liked the tempo and especially the commitment to solid OUTLET PASSES --- something we too often got slack with last season.
- I liked that we are indeed pushing after made shots
- I liked some of the hard cuts to the basket
- I did NOT like (with the above caveat notwithstanding) that we still aren't utilizing the key trigger of the Carolina Secondary, i.e, the trail dive, before we start perimeter action. Granted, our own guys are gonna get back on transition D, so it's wait-and-see.
- I did not like that we ran the same shell scheme in Freelance off transition pretty much every time. Again, with the caveat of not showing too much too soon, we'll know more from the Exhibitions.
- I did not like the clunkiness off the high screen action, in particular Bigs taking too long afterwards to get the heck outta no-man's land to make themselves useful. We can't only rely on EC's penetration to trigger vital inside-out geometry. It's fine to start Bigs high but if we don't dive to a post like we mean it, 4-out becomes de facto 5-out and I'll say straight-up that nothing good will come from that. We absolutely NEED to see to JWash getting touches in and around the magic triangle!

Finally, good to see the guys playing, and I'm anxiously looking forward to Tuesday!...

Awesome as usual G!

A lot to be excited about and tweaks to look forward to! I don't think anyone is worried about Bigs still needing some work on P/R and not going too deep in our offensive playbook during a very early scrimmage. I love the EC and JWash reports, and I am glad to see it confirmed that Cade will settle and be fine!

Combining both squads, we went for 20 assists against 10 turnovers (20:8 if you only count scholarship players). I'll let the experts weigh in on that, but it sounds like a nice team ratio to me. Yeah, yeah, just a scrimmage game, but still....

Claude tied for 2nd best rebounder (6), but on half the minutes (10) of some others. On the downside, he was a foul magnet (4).

I noticed him several times, especially in the 2nd half. He may not be competing for starting minutes, but a good addition to the team, I think.

I think the obvious "too soon" question is this: If Seth is really that good, how do you find minutes for him? Because you have to find minutes for someone that good.

More small ball?

Imo go small and hound the mess out of teams and score score score from defense too. Knowing you’ll give up some on defense being smaller is a good trade. Especially when you’re subbing in and rotating well. The other team could be out of the game physically by mid second half. Sounds good at least.

I agree. We should run early and often. I would love to see a lot of full court press. We have athletes everywhere. Lets use them to harass the other teams and not just wear them down on the defensive side, but making them work just to get up the court.

I don't really take away much from these blue/white scrimmages, great to see some individual performances and for these type games this was pretty competitive (many are not). It is when they are going against opponents that they do not see every day in practice that I can see what we really have.

Couple things I did find of interest, great to see Seth playing confident and actively looking for his ops. Good to see James Brown show well, if that can continue it would be really big for us. I though Claude did well for himself, I was a good bit lower on him that maybe I should have been. Jalen, led his team in scoring and boards (if he didn't lead in boards he was close) but he did that in only 17mins, wondering why only 17mins?

WW asked how we manufacture minutes for Seth, legit concern. I do think the higher pace, if we can commit to it all season, will help that. We do have to seriously ask the question, can this team afford to have RJ average 35+mins a game? We have RJ, Seth, Ian, and Drake all looking for some minutes at the 2 (Drake, Tyson, Seth, and Ian all looking for minutes at the 3 as well). This isn't a question of how do we get Seth minutes, it is how do we get all of the above minutes. The only real answer is that it is on Hubert to make that commitment.

Said it before, I woul;d like to see Seth run Point for those 8-10 minutes EC is on the bench, then pick up wing minutes along the way.

I agree with the idea of Seth running backup point minutes now that he seems to have a much tighter handle and a more confident overall game! I believe I saw Drake doing some PG work too so maybe he gets some run by next season at PG (assuming he doesn't play his way into the draft)

Nobody on the team should play more than 30 minutes IMO! Will RJ be happy with 0 PG minutes is a question I want to know! I would love for RJ to just play his 25-28 minutes exclusively at 2, but I do know he can't be a 2 in the pros!

I’d imagine that when EC goes out RJ will get his pg mins, since that’s what happened last year when EC struggled with called fouls and shooting. If that happens again, that opens up more minutes for the other guards. Maybe not ideal but RJ is our second best option at pg imo. A different kind of course but still an pg. Especially if the others coming in can shoot it from deep, and, A BIG and, the others can trust them to shoot it. Who knows, we might see a new leaf turned over from Seth but I think he’s a two also.

The more time RJ spends off-ball (other than schemed iso mismatches) the better.

Yeah. When RJ went out I was thinking it was a real shame Seth wasn't on his team. I would have liked to see Seth handle the point (intentionally).

Most of the time I don't think Seth is in PG mode because that's not what Coach has him in there for. So it's hard for a guy at my level to judge how good he actually is in that role.

Can you shed some light on that?

LOL, well ya know how I feel about Seth so I definitely would love to see Seth run the point when Cadeau takes a seat, frankly, I think I would prefer Drake at the point to RJ, have 4 seasons of reasons why.

This season, the thing I will be looking harder at than maybe anything else is the evolution of our head coach. He now has 3 full seasons under his belt, I now need to see what consistent approach defines Hubert as a head coach. I have seen a LOT of tinkering, let's try this or that, seen a lot of lip service to I want us to do this or that, have not seen the consistency of approach that I need to see. It is year 4 now, the time to start showing this is how a Hubert Davis team plays.
