The Heels used good play to make 5 minutes bookends to some of the worst basketball we have ever seen UNC play. The Heels ended up turning in a poor offensive night (0.86 pts/poss), and an even worse defensive night (1.03 ppp). Pitt shot 51% from the field, a rate eclipsed by 83 opponents in the last 945 games. Even worse for UNC was Pitt's 3-point shooting percentage; 59%. Only 14 of UNC's last 945 opponents have shot better from behind the arc.
UNC's despiration showed as it attempted 44.8% of its shots from behind the arc. We've only seen UNC opt for the 3 more in 41 of the last 945 games.
The Smith Index (the sum of UNC's excess offensive and defensive efficiencies) was an abysmal -0.27. It ranks as the #102 worst overall performance since 1996.
It wasn't all bad. The Heels forced turnovers on 24% of Pitt's possessions, which is the 59th best rate since 1996. Pitt was sloppy, they just weren't contested when shooting.
The tournament hopes are fading, friends. Now with a Quad-4 loss, the lack of Quad-1 wins weighs heavily. No team has ever made the tournament with no Quad-1 wins.
