Stats and stuff (BC game)...

If I saw an ongoing trend, I might be a little concerned, but I don't. FGA's for the season to date:

Jackson 296
Meeks 215
Joel 202
Isaiah 172
Kenny 116
Nate 110
Tony 97
Luke 69

I think our best players are getting the lion's share of the shots, for the most part. I'd like to see Isaiah get a few more attempts and Nate to get fewer. Theo only has 19 FGA's but he's missed most of the season. As I said in another thread, Kennedy and Isaiah are only averaging 47 minutes combined, I would like to see bothe averaging 3-4 more minutes per game.

Yeah, I just think we are a much better over all team, much harder to defend when we get Hicks engaged and producing early, especially vs teams he has a clear advantage against.

I do get concerned at times when I see both Jackson and Joel take what appear to me to be harder than needed shots. When either of those guys have that game when it is rolling cool, go for it, feed the beast as they say. But that is not always the case and when it isn't rather than stay with plan A that isn't working as well as it does in other games, we need to shift in to the next plan.

Truth is, most of our struggles have come against teams that have got that hot shooter going off on us and we have to find ways to cool down that hot shooter and not go back down to the other end and have a empty trip. IMO, our front court has done a very solid job on the defensive end, better than I would have expected going in to this season and in some games our back court defends like mad men, we turn the other team over and we get off to the races. But it is those games where we see a hot shooter keep getting cleaner looks that do at times hurt us and that needs some tweeking.

Early season, Joel was a beast defensively, you could see it in his eyes, he was locked in, his defense was fueling his offense, for him personally and for this team. I have not seen that in a while honestly, offense can come & go but defense is supposed to be constant, it seems to have slipped a bit. Joel does need to pick it up a little bit on the assist side of things, 1 assist in our last 2 games from our starting PG should be a concern for every Tar Heel fan and I don't want that glossed over is my point. I want to see Joel get some assists from feeding Hicks, I think that takes us to an even higher level.

I think we're an unselfish team that shares the ball. JJ does have a tendency to force three point shots at times, but we need him to aggressively hunt his shot because he's our most irresistable scorer.

I am more concerned with our perimeter defense, specifically with regard to 3-pt defense. We help down on defense far too much and that is on Roy. It is his responsibility as coach to tell his guards to stay closer to opposing guards and not allow them so many open looks from outside. When someone is lighting us up from behind the arc, Roy should instruct the man guarding him to "stay with him at all times, do not leave him!" At least make teams prove that our bigs can't guard them one on one before helping down so much.

Yeah, less shots for Jackson is worse for the team. I specifically kind of looked for this when watching the game since it was the replay. He missed some shots but I liked all of his takes. Several of his misses drew other defenders which led to ORs as well.

Help defense is always an issue. I am a little surprised that our upperclassmen are still struggling with it as much as they are though. I don't get bothered too much by the high screen that leads to a three. Those are tough. The help when it isn't necessary (sometimes it is, which is fine) is what shouldn't be happening.

I agree.
