Summer movies worth price of admission

Saw Spider-Man last night, it's a lot of fun. Tom Holland is a great fit for the character, Michael Keaton is a terrific villain, and there are very funny moments in addition to some solid action set pieces. I would need to rewatch it before I can say how it compares to the best Spidey movies so far, but it's definitely close to the top, for me anyway.
Finally saw this last weekend and really enjoyed it. My only complaint is that they could have done a little more development of Keaton's character. Like you said, though, lots of unexpected laughs and good action scenes, plus a plot twist to boot.

Yeah, I get what you mean, I thought his performance was great, but they could have done just a touch more with his motivations and everything. The twist resulted in a lot of gasps in my theater for sure.

I've seen two movies in the past week: Mother! and The Hitman's Bodyguard.

Mother was a movie I went into with some curiosity, it's directed by the guy who made Black Swan which I really liked and it has a very solid cast. With that said, the movie itself is just so bizarre, and once you get the metaphor that they are going for with the story, it makes more sense, but even then, you are going to leave the theater going "What the hell did I just watch?" I thought it was a well made movie, the acting is all fine, the technical aspects of it are fine, but some of the things that happen are among the most f***ed up things I've ever seen in a movie. The ads are a little misleading for what the movie actually is as well. Check it out if you want, but it's going to be a bizarre watch.

The Hitman's Bodyguard was more straightforward, it's basically a buddy cop meets road trip comedy featuring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson. You basically know what you're going to get from both of those actors at this point, and you pretty much get exactly that. There are some funny parts, there are some fun action scenes, but nothing groundbreaking. Not the greatest movie I ever saw, but not the worst either. It's gonna be one that you'll see on cable and say "Well, let's check this out."

Planning on checking out Kingsman: The Golden Circle on Friday and The Lego Ninjago Movie on Sunday. I'm telling you guys, this Moviepass thing is gold. I've used it 4 times so far, so what would have cost me approximately $40 has only cost me $10, and I'm gonna use it more times before the month is over.

I saw American Made last night. I really enjoyed it. Certainly not the best movie ever made, but it was an entertaining, enjoyable flick. Tom Cruise is really good in it (IMO).

It gets the THN11 Seal of Approval (. . . get it? Because the movie is about a guy named Barry Seal)

I was planning on seeing that in the next few days. I think Cruise is generally pretty solid, he doesn't have a ton of movies that are flat out duds imo. There are some, but he generally makes a pretty entertaining movie. Totally crazy in real life, but a solid actor who still has big box office draw.

He's really good in this one. The movie has a more whimsical, light-hearted tone than you might expect, given the subject matter, and Cruise plays right in to that. He nails the laid-back, country boy badass persona.

Also, Sarah Wright is a fukkin BABE. Holy wow.

Yeah I remember her from Parks and Rec, she is definitely easy on the eyes.

I'm hoping that the new Blade Runner will be good, because I definitely want to see that one.
Yeah it looks pretty good, the director has a pretty solid track record (I really dug Arrival and Sicario, he also did Prisoners, which I haven't seen yet). I need to watch the original some time this week, been a long time since I've watched it

..........dude, you haven't seen Prisoners?! As a film buff, you need to see that movie. I thought it was really, really good. It's so dark and so good.

Well I haven't seen every single movie haha. But yeah been meaning to watch that one, and I heard Jackman was great in it. Just gotta find the time to fit that one in, it's not on a ton of streaming things at the moment.

I just watched the original last night with my teenage son. I love rewatching movies with people that haven't seen them before*. While the original does have a few slow moments, he loved the visuals, and Rutger Huaer's (sp) character. And he's pumped about seeing the new one as well. I assume Ford's character is going to get kilt off (1 down, 2 to go?).

* Alien is a great one just to see the reaction to the John Hurt scene.

Yeah Harrison joked(?) that he's gonna revive all his old characters just to kill them off. It was definitely one of the reasons he did Force Awakens, and he really wanted Han to die in Return of the Jedi

Definitely needs to go to the top of your last. Jackman is great in it. So is Gyllenhaal and Terrence Howard.

I heard that before too. So, Deckard is likely done. And then Indy is next.
I rewatched the original Blade Runner last night to prepare for going to see it tonight. It had been a very long time since seeing it, and I'm not actually sure I ever saw the entire thing, but I really enjoyed it now. The reason I bring this up is to ask you: Do you think Deckard is a replicant? I've seen that theory out there before, and watching it last night, there is definitely evidence there. Not saying I'm certain about it, but if they make it crystal clear in this one that he's a replicant, I wouldn't be surprised.

I've always wondered that as well. I've heard that they asked reviewers / critics not to reveal spoilers, so it's a good bet that we find out that Deckard is a replicant.

FWIW, Rotten Tomatoes score is ~90, and IMDB user rating is 8.8/10; most reviews are favorable. I'm going to see it this weekend... maybe later today!

Yeah there is a line in the trailer that makes me think he'll be one. Will find out soon. It does look pretty good, reviews are solid, but it's also going to be 2 hours 40 minutes which could turn a lot of people off.

This isn't a summer movie yet, but today they announced a Fast and Furious spin-off movie feature The Rock and Jason Statham's characters to come out in 2019, and I'm already buying my ticket.

So yes, the new Blade Runner is worth the price of admission. And I went Saturday afternoon, which was much more enjoyable than watching the Heels get smashed again.

I won't reveal anything but will say that it has a similar look and feel as the original (except without the film-noir type narration). I still prefer the original but it was well done, with some good performances. As you said, it was a looong movie; it could've been 30 minutes shorter, I think.

I don't recall seeing Ana de Armas in other movies but hope to see her in many more...

I saw it Friday night, really enjoyed it. They've actually removed the narration from the original movie on more recent releases because it wasn't originally supposed to have it, but the studio wanted it. So I don't think the cuts I've seen ever featured narration. While I would agree they could possibly trim some time, I never felt like anything dragged or didn't bring something to the table, which is generally my criticism of overly long movies. But it definitely nails the feeling of the original which is often hard to do when dealing with long awaited sequels/reboots. As for Ana de Armas, the only other decently known movies that she's been in (based on her IMDB page) are Knock Knock (a horror/suspense movie with Keanu Reeves) and War Dogs (a satire with Jonah Hill and Miles Teller). I heard Knock Knock was pretty good. She impressed me in this movie, as did a number in the rest of the cast. I might check it out again since I have the Moviepass

Well since @TarHeelNation11 thinks I only go to movies to keep this thread alive (see how I did that?), I went to a movie this afternoon with the Moviepass app, and checked out American Made. I have to agree with his assessment, it’s a fun movie, never fails to keep your attention, and Tom Cruise is as charismatic as ever. It helps that the director also worked on another great Cruise movie (Edge of Tomorrow or Live Die Repeat, depending on if you saw it in theaters or on DVD/cable) but it’s certainly a solid movie. Enjoyed the frantic nature of a lot of it, helped sell the subject matter, IMO.

Nah I know you were just had to have some fun ;) I actually generally like Tom Cruise, I think he’s super crazy in real life but most of his movies are entertaining. It’s amazing he can still be such a big box office draw after basically 35 years

Baby Driver was so great. Seeing it on the big screen was terrific, but I’ve watched it at home also and you still get an awesome experience there too

Saw Dunkirk this evening. Thought it was great. Very intense movie, 100% worth seeing on the big screen. Check it out if you get the chance. I wish I lived closer to an IMAX theater because it would have been worth it.
Six months later, and I finally watched Dunkirk. I'm sure it was more intense on the big screen, but I really enjoyed it.

Man, that ticking kept my heart pounding like the whole time. I got it on Blu Ray, haven't watched it yet at home but it was awesome in the theater for sure.
