Ted Valentine

I hope they make an example of him like they did Hess. The issue is if the other refs start black balling him which can happen. The good ones don’t want to be associated with that BS. It reflects poorly on the crew, conference and profession.

First take guys in ESPN absolutely trashed Ted Valentine about his actions towards Joel. All agreed that it was petty and ridiculous but said to do it to a 4 year all American type player who by all accounts is as respectful as they come with officials was even worse.

...not to metion he's the Captain. Some refs will talk to any player, some won't, but they all are supposed to talk to the Captain.

Exactly. At least just hear him out, even if he didn’t want to get into it with Joel he very easily could’ve just taken the ball from Joel and said to him okay, okay, I’ll get the next one right or I just missed this one, gave him a pat on the back and moved on with the game. That could’ve been done very easily and is the proper and respectable interaction between a player and a ref.
What is getting to us all is that we know who Joel is and we clearly saw the manner that he went about trying to talk to Valentine, yet Valentine just decided to turn his back and ignore him in a very disrespectful and arrogant way adding his extra theatrics to it showing he didn't want to give Joel the time of the day. Like you said, I think Joel has clearly deserved his right to talk things over with the refs especially when he goes about it the right way by showing respect to the ref. It's not like Joel ran up to him yelling and out of control.
The kind of message Valentine showed is that he didn’t give two hoots about Joel or UNC, I am very glad that it is being addressed because what he did was wrong and should never happen again.

You said a mouth full.
That is exactly how a good ref handles it. "Hey, I missed that one" (and I'll guarantee he knew he missed it) and there's usually a make-up call.

This is the most troubling part. Teddy had that exact rep early in his career, but turned into a solid official (outside of the show-boating). What I saw last night soured me permanently on him. Teddy wasn't just being a dick, he had an agenda, and that showed up in the lack of calls as well as that very sketchy conversation he had with FSU fans.

That is definitely not professional. The video of this needs to be shown to his superiors and action taken. I wish we didn't have to see a lot of the same refs over and over in a season. I think habits can be formed, in our favor and not, that would not happen as much if different refs were used more throughout the year.

It wasn't his call, but that doesn't excuse his behavior.

His statements reveal the level of narcissism and immaturity.... not his fault, it’s the fans and media who’re blowing it out of proportion.

Hey Ted, hold yourself accountable for your actions instead of throwing your toys outta the cot!

That is one of the reasons I said l, captains, but you see guys theses days who are 1-5th off the bench talking it up to refs.
I hear ya, bench guys don't need to be talking to them, but as for guys on the floor, in my experience as a player I respected the zebras who made themselves accessible. Heck, some refs initiate a proactive conversation with players while the game is going on, like "Don't hold him", "watch those screens" and the like. In fact, that becomes more prevalent as the level increases. You get that in college much more than in HS.

As a player you should be able to walk up to the zebra and say something like (oh i dunno), "#14's grabbing my arm on outlet passes"... and usually get a proper response like "Hey, didn't see it but I'll watch for it". Players tend to respect refs who treat them with respect. You can respect a ref making an honest miss if he's willing to hear an honest complaint (as long as you're not storming him or showing him up --- and JB was doing neither).

As I said above, Teddy's actions tell me he probably did see it and just decided not to call it, and thus wasn't gonna hear about it. I hope what he said in the link Billy posted comes to fruition. TV needs to hang it up, for his own good and the good of the game.

LoL at Teddy. Big10 pulled him from games this weekend and now he wants to consider retirement. He’s such a tool bag.

I totally echo that Gary, I like to see a ref engage with a player with some simple dialogue throughout the game just so they are able to understand each side. The game is filled with mistakes from refs, players and coaches and sometimes one of them miss something and need to be known in a respectful way just that. As players and coaches make adjustments during games, refs can do the same to help the game flow better and do their job in the best way possible because at the end of their day their job is to call a fair game for both sides based on the rules.

In regards to the article @BillyL posted, all I have to say to Teddy is C'MON MAN!! What he did was wrong any way you look at it, he missed the call and ignored a player who respectfully went to discuss it. As Roy would say "The eye in the sky doesn't lie."
I had a feeling that he would react this way, what he did is his fault and his alone. He should just ADMIT that what he did was wrong, face any consequence and move on with it, he acts in this egotistical way and is going to retire because of some criticism, not such a big tough guy now. Well, I guess we can see what type of person he is. Any respect that I had for him, which I can say was very low is completely gone now. See ya later TV Ted!!

Add Eades!
I dunno, Mikey. Eades got on my good side last April. His two make-up calls for Michael Stephens' obvious boners was a big factor in us winning that one.

I'm sure it wasn't because he likes us. Probably just trying to keep it fair. Stephens' antipathy toward UNC is not exactly a big secret.

I've always thought Eades was competent but my complaint (and probably yours) is that for years he got caught up in the K backwash, so much so that I dreaded seeing him in a Carolina-dook game. It was like the Rat bit his nuts off. Hopefully he has established himself enough to just call it straight from here on out. The Natty game definitely gives me hope. I guess there's a good chance we'll see before long.

I guess you could go ahead and add whoever the knot heads were calling the UNC Clemson game last night to the list of incompetent boobs. That call they made against #10 that Roy requested a review of, and then the refs blowing it off and still charging Roy a TO was BS. #10 was not even in the zip code of where the foul occurred.

Valentine is a bit of a hot dog, always has been. And maybe entering into an open dialogue with a player would be great in the perfect world. But you rarely get that “open” discussion with a player as they are concubines they have been wronged. And the refs are not paid to coddle players and make them understand a call. They aren’t going to convince them anyway. And when a ref responds it often just makes things worse. I don’t have a problem with a red refusing to discuss a call with a player, but in this case I agree that Valentine could have been a little less theatrical in his denial.
