The caravan seems to be going swimmingly. A couple thousand of them in Tijuana seem to have already worn out their welcome with the Mexican locals after being there for a couple days.

It's estimated that it'll cost $4M to care for the caravan for two months, the local government only has enough money to support them for 10 days. But, they've extended a nice gesture of setting up shelters in indoor gyms and places of the like. However, their spokesman didn't seem keen on taking up the offer:

Irineo Mujica, an immigrant activist who helps organize migrant caravans, said the migrants still at the beach – and the ones en route to Tijuana – wouldn’t go to the shelters. He referred to them as “jails” with strict curfews. He said he was concerned that non-governmental organizations wouldn’t be allowed into the shelters, making it harder for the migrants to remain organized as one collective.

“For this reason – because this is oppression – we prefer to be in the streets, in the cold, rather than in a jail,” Mujica said.

Well, it doesn't seem like the Mexican locals like them hanging out in their streets (weather.com says it's 70 degrees there so I can't confirm the spokesman's claim of cold). Maybe we should open our doors to help them all out a little bit?

Seems the kindness and understanding of people in Mexico has changed now that they realize they might not just be passing through.

Poor things must be freezing.

Ya, I'm not sure why they quoted the cost of caring for them for two months. Either they anticipate them getting into the US in two months, or they plan on telling them to kick rocks after 2 months and go back to Honduras.

I'm curious if the advocates for the caravan imagine the situation being less violent and expensive in the US, or if they feel as though the danger and costs of sheltering them are worth it anyways.

“They chose the wrong time to get asylum,” Belmontes said. “(Trump) clearly doesn’t want them there.”

Interesting quote from the article. It makes you wonder how this would be handled by either Trump's predecessor or opponent had they been in office when this caravan arrived.

I wonder how much these people actually know about what Trump has said and/or done about these border crossings. The cynic in me thinks that these groups that are "advising" them aren't being completely honest about the situation and may have their own motives.

Tensions are escalating in Tijuana. I wonder if these people are wishing they took Mexico's offer to let them stay in Mexico?

"Tijuana Locals Assault Caravan Migrants, Threaten to Rip Them From Shelter"

Sounds like it's going down. But think for a minute, if this were in the US instead of Tijuana, that headline would read "Trump Supporters Assault Caravan Migrants, Threaten to Rip Them From Shelter" and everyone would be up in a tizzy over the "right-wing extremists".

The thing is, these people all could have had asylum in Mexico. The Mexican government was going to set them up with jobs and schools, but they didn't want that. Instead they wanted to come to the U.S. Gee, I wonder why that is? It couldn't have anything to do with getting on Medicaid and other government assistance, could it?

No way. These are just good folks looking to be Americans. They have probably been listening to Rosetta Stone on the trek up here to brush up on their English as well.

Will be interesting since the Cali judge has stopped Trump's asylum order for now.

Hmm, I just read that - will be interesting indeed. Seems like that is set to be reviewed on 12/19, so I would expect the caravan to make their push before then.

Hopefully the Cali judge is at peace with whatever may happen to those in the caravan if they happen to cross in front of some troops trying to capitalize on his blocking of the order.

At this point, Trump should just start a war with Mexico and be done with it. He has that power and at that point, the troops are just doing their job. Congress would never declare war, but he would have at least 90 days to clean up this mess.

We have plenty of nukes laying around. Might as well not let them go to waste.

Not kill anyone? Where's the fun in that?

Seriously though, I don't want to see these people hurt, but we need to do something about the illegal immigration in this country. We have all kinds of problems already here, we don't need to be adding more.

The last thing I want to see is troops clashing with civilians. It won't end well. Soldiers make shytty cops...that's not their training. There's nothing diplomatic about a Joe. They'll just bust heads.

It's not a perfect plan by any stretch. The only other thing you could do is capture these people, put them in camps while you process them, and then process them at such a slow speed that it would allow a higher court to overturn this judge's decision. At that point, we're still on the hook for their food, water, and medical attention.

Edit: Just for the record, I used to be in favor of illegal immigration. However, at this point in time, it's just being abused and it needs to stop. We have financial obligations elsewhere that need to be met before we start trying to feed and cloth the rest of the world.

The best defense is a strong offense.

So we spent 92 million to deploy troops to prevent the invasion of unarmed civilians. Oh i forgot, they have rocks. Nuke em.

A cost benefit analysis here would probably have been good. Would the caravan have sapped $92M from the country if they were allowed in? If so, this expense was worth it. If not, maybe it wasn’t. Although I guess you have to also factor in the repercussions, if the caravan was freely allowed to enter, would others have then followed and in total cost the country more than $92M?
