Alright guys, so we are doing a TV bracket. This poast/thread will cover the official rules regarding format, selection of shows, seeding, and other measures of protocol. So, let's do this.

THE REGIONS
  1. Drama: The Drama region will include 16 hour-long scripted television series and will be made to include any miniseries (ex: Band of Brothers) or anthology series (ex: Fargo) that meets that criteria.
  2. Comedy: The Comedy region will include 16 half hour live action television series, but they have to be shows with a plot that covers the whole episode, not a sketch show, which will be included in region 4.
  3. Animation: The Animation region will include 16 animated television series of any length, either hand-drawn, computer animated, or stop-motion (ex: Robot Chicken).
  4. Miscellaneous: The Miscellaneous region will include 16 television series that will be drawn from variety (ex: SNL, The Daily Show, Key & Peele), game shows, educational, or reality. This region will be a bit of a hodgepodge, but it seemed the most fair way to include any other form of television that exists. Also, if you nominate a talk show such as The Tonight Show, you are nominating the show in it's entirety, so there won't be a separate "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" or "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," it's the whole thing.
The winners of the Drama and Miscellaneous regions will meet in one half of the Final Four, while the winners of the Comedy and Animation regions will meet in the other half.

SELECTING SHOWS
  1. There will be a thread to nominate shows for each region. There will be a 48 hour period to nominate shows in that given category.
  2. The 16 shows that receive the most nominations will be chosen to participate as the representatives for that region.
  3. In the event of a tie in the nomination process, the shows that advance will do so following the seeding procedures I'm listing in the next section.
SEEDING SHOWS
  1. The first determining factor for seeds will be based on the popular vote during the nomination process.
  2. If two or more shows are tied in votes, we will proceed to a tie breaking formula which weighs the shows based on Emmy awards/nominations and IMDB rating.
  3. If they were to still be tied after that, the show's longevity would be the deciding factor.
ONCE THE BRACKET IS SET
  1. There will be a thread for each region round by round. There will be a 48 hour period in which you vote for all the matchups in that region for that round. The winners will advance, the losers are eliminated. We will proceed in this matter until one show is ultimately declared the champion of the inaugural OOTB TV Tournament.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask, my plan is to poast the first "nominations" thread on Sunday to give everyone a chance to look at this thread and pose any questions that I hadn't thought of yet. This thread could also serve as the overall thread for discussing the tournament if we wanted to get it pinned, but I know a mod has to do that.

It moved.

This is obviously no cereal tournament, but you've put a great deal of thought into it. Thank you for that. I have an important question to ask.

When I nominate a show, like Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, do you determine the Region into which it will be placed? Or do we get to argue amongst ourselves which shows belong in which Regions? I'd be perfectly happy with you doing it to keep this thing moving along, unlike the ill-fated movie thread (cc: @notashelbyfan). Also, talking about Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman was just an example. I'm not actually nominating Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman (except I totally am).

Well I'm going to have nomination threads for each region so that would be where you nominate a show if you believe it would apply in that region. So for Dr Quinn Medicine Woman, it would be in the Drama region. There may be some I have to make a determination on, such as if anyone nominates the Simpsons in comedy, it would have to be moved to animation, but I was hoping the big long poast at the top would help clear that stuff up

What about the show Dexter? He's a serial killer but I find him chuckle worthy. Dexter is on your list right?

Maybe when you fail at this my name will be cleared of all wrong doing or at least you will join me in the OOTB Hall of Shame!

What if it's a comedy, but it's an hour long?

Pushing Daisies was cancelled way too soon.
I'll make an exception in that case, because you're right, that was a comedy. I was trying to use the latest Emmy rules which they used to define genres because of shows like Orange is the New Black which is also an hour, but is in that in between area

So is OITNB comedy or drama?

The Emmys moved it to drama. At this point they consider anything that's an hour long to be drama, so that is what I'm gonna do, but I'll make an exception for Pushing Daisies since that existed before that rule change and won Emmys in the comedy category
