Thoughts on the State of the Union address?

I don't think it will make a difference to black people for a multitude of reasons, which doesn't really make sense to me. I do think it would have made a small difference had they stood up and/or clapped though.
It kinda disgusted me to be honest because it was such an overt "political move." Black unemployment is at an all-time low and you can't stand and clap simply to celebrate that fact? Even if you despise the president, you can't clap that your own people are getting more jobs?

See, politics is so much like sports now. They didn't wanna stand and clap because it wasn't "their team" that was touting the statistic. It was the "other team."

For those that watched, how awesome was that story of the North Korean guy? He overcame a lot to get where he is today.

Why should they feel the need to clap for Trump?

Why should they feel the need to clap for Trump?

They don't need to clap for Trump. But they can still clap for the fact that their unemployment numbers are at an all time low.

That'd be like if some dook fan was making a speech and dropped a "Hark got a new job this year and is making bank and killing it", I'd stand and applaud, even though I didn't like the dookie or the "team" he was on, I could still like the point he was making.

Your response actually perfectly proves @TarHeelNation11 's point that people are so ingrained on one side or the other that they can't see past that to find good common grounds.

Well, he didn't use the "n" word or anything so I guess he did as good as he could.

C'mon Lyles. You've never been one to give up that easy. I'm sure if you analyze the first letter of 6 consecutive sentences you can see them spell out the N word. If not, try the last letter in any 6 sentence sequence. It's gotta be in there somewhere. No way this racist bastard would have let the opportunity slip by without putting them in their place, right?

My guess is the reason they chose not to applaud was they likely bought into Trumpy's declaration in 2015 that those unemployment numbers of 5.3% were wrong, You know, they were really 30, 32% or he's heard as high as 42% some such bulls#it . . which is it Donny Douchebag . . ? Ya can't have it both ways . .

From the article linked:

"The number isn't reflective," he said. "I've seen numbers of 24 percent -- I actually saw a number of 42 percent unemployment. Forty-two percent." He continued, "5.3 percent unemployment -- that is the biggest joke there is in this country. … The unemployment rate is probably 20 percent, but I will tell you, you have some great economists that will tell you it's a 30, 32. And the highest I've heard so far is 42 percent."

Do you really believe they bought into that?

True. So were Trump's numbers right then, or right now?

You'll haveta ask them what they believe . .

My guess is Trump's numbers are never correct, and that, in any sentence he spouts off about.

All reports I’ve read said it was very good. Even the democrats are admitting that Trump did well. Plus, if it had sucked, a few poasters here would have had a thread on it within minutes of it being over.

@heelbent @tarheel0910 and anyone else who watched.... and this kinda goes along with my discussion about how I believe it's impossible now to sway people who are on 'the other side.'

I was arguing with my buddy about this (also a Republican who went to Carolina; we may be the only ones who aren't from the North). At one point in the speech, Trump made note that African-American unemployment rate is at an all-time national low. They panned to the black caucus, none of whom stood or clapped in response to this, when lots of other folks stood. I do not know for sure if CNN and other outlets showed the black caucus. Fox News did. Supposing the other news outlets showed it.......my buddy thinks that blacks saw that and will get irritated by it and it will make them angry and demand more/change from black Democrats. Y'all buy that at all? I don't think it makes one lick of difference. If they did see it, blacks will just be in agreeance with not standing or clapping. And it's not a racial point I'm making. I'm just saying that I think it's impossible to sway people now.

It won't matter one iota. They are programmed, for the most part.

There's a picture of Trump hanging on the wall in our outer office. I received a complaint from a guy saying that having the president's picture hanging there was blatantly racist and it offended him. He DEMANDED I have it removed. Obama's picture hung in the same spot and I never heard a peep about it from anyone. I eventually told the guy the only racist in this building was him.

I highly doubt that Trump ever refers to black people as nigggers. I don't believe Donald Trump is racist to that extent. I think that people who DO refer to blacks that way, in a derogatory, insulting way, tend to be his more fervent supporters. But, I don't really believe that Trump thinks blacks are inferior people. He probably gauges people by their wealth status than ethnicity. He has no idea what being poor is like.

I just hate the way he talks. It's like...I can tell how he's going to say a sentence and the inflection he'll put on it before he even says it based on whatever dumb things he's doing with his hands and face.

..and I'm a conservative mostly.

But I think what he actually said (not necessarily how he said it) was real solid last night.

Ok. I'm glad you brought up a non existent race issue to make your point. It's very constructive.
I was trying to make the point that he didn't say anything as outrageous as some other things he has said (grab them by the pussy, my daughter is a piece of ass with big tits, etc).. I can see where it looks like I was trying to bring up race but I truly wasn't. Sorry for not making my point better.

Trump has earned that spot on the wall.

I addressed this in another post.

He used to be so much more eloqueny and articulate, and just sounded more inyelligent when he was younger. He speaks with a low IQ vocabulary now.

To be fair, that describes a majority of the country.

ETA: If I recall correctly, most news articles are written at a lower high school level. Correct me if I'm wrong @JuleZ '02 HEEL.

I watched it. I would say it was about as good as it could be. Half the crowd clapping, the other looking at their phones. Same as Obama, Bush, clinton,ECT

The country is divided. Nothing anyone can do about it. Almost divided into multiple sections, not just 2

That Harrah's in New Orleans is nice. I was in that city for the first time ever for New Years. Fun times.

Yeah- the only thing is Craps is a $10 min bet, which is more than I like to play.

Leonard Fournette was in there playing the tables. That was kind of cool

Craps will never make sense to me. I've stood there and watched it for 30 minutes at a time, and it's just too much going on. I'm strictly a Blackjack guy.

Craps is the best game in the casino, but you have to be able to tolerate the roller coaster.

It's really pretty easy too if you ignore the sucker bets.

Craps in the casino is much different than under the stairwell in high school. I prefer the under the stairwell version.

Black unemployment was cut in half under Obama, and the same man taking credit for that progress was busy calling him a Kenyan Muslim terrorist while he was in office. You seriously expect democrats to applaud for him? Lol

I agree politics is like sports though. Sports are tribal. People are tribal. Pretty much everything we do is like sports in that sense.

Both tribes do this to the absolute extreme. Everything is about political marketing now, and I'm kinda tired of hearing people from both sides outraged at the other side's posturing. Dems do it all the time, GOP does it all the time, whatever.

My point is why do they need to applaud Trump for it? He’s taking credit. The dook fan in your analogy didn’t help you get the job and make bank.

FTR, I find the endless applause in the speeches silly. I’m a ‘hold your applause till the end’ type of guy.
