Nothing better in the summer than two slices of juicy fresh tomato between slices of toast slathered with mayo and salt and pepper.* That's all I wanted to say. You all have a good afternoon.

*Except for a BLT...but this thread isn't about BLT's so GFY.

you're doing it wrong.
tomato, thin sliced prosciutto, buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil...maybe a little red onion and arugula, dash of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, fresh ground pepper.

I'm just glad somebody started a thread that 1) wasn't some tournament bs 2) didn't complain about how slow the board is or 3) was some ootb-only sports related thread for which entire message boards already exist.

I always take the tomatoes off any sandwich. I like them diced up in stuff but hate them on sandwiches. I don't think I could eat one even with a lot of Miracle Whip.

I'm all in with this post . . !

Mine are lightly toasted . . just enough to stand up to the mayo and tomato liquid runoff . .

That does sound amazing. On a related note, prosciutto might be the most underrated food of all time.

Heelmanwilm gets it.

Tomatoes. Home grown, not store bought. Preferably big Red Beefsteaks or Better Boys. Purple Cherokee Heirlooms are ok too.

White bread. Soft. Not toasted.

Duke's Mayonnaise.
Salt and pepper. Lot's of pepper.

That is all.

Correct. The bread should not be anything fancy, its purpose is mostly structural.

Nope, but my dad was, so that's probably where it came from. There was always Hellman's in the fridge, so that's what I'm used to.
Yeah, I guess it's just what you grew up eating. I've been a Duke's fan for as long as I can remember.

Definitely with you on the home grown and not store bought. With a BLT, I think you can get away with store bought tomatoes (even though they still aren't as good, obviously), but with a tomato sandwich, they have to be at least locally grown.

For the bread, I prefer wheat. I like the flavor and the texture a lot better, even though white will do just fine. They're still good soft, but I prefer all sandwiches toasted; tomato not being an exception.

I, for one, don't consider whole wheat bread "fancy" so you're good to go..

I'm from damn yankee lineage... we moved to NC when I was 7 or 8 (and thank God we did). I say that because the first time I ever heard of someone eating a tomato sandwich, I thought WTH is wrong with these people? However, I do really like a good mater sammich.

Regarding the mayo, my culinary student daughter makes fresh homemade mayo (it's really pretty simple), and it's damn good. Sometimes she'll make some garlic mayo, or spicy mayo, which is fantastic as wel.

White bread with mayo & pepper on a mater sandwich along with corn on the cob with big glass of home brew ice tea.

Seriously...how many of you fellows grow your own tomatoes? I have a couple plants growing here at work.

I plant between 20 to 24 each year of different variety.

I've got a few German Johnsons, Better Boys and Beefsteaks at home. I planted two of the Red Beefsteaks at work. When this place gets to me I go outside and mess with them a bit just to stay out of prison.

Little cherry and grape tomatoes are the only ones I've had any luck with. Either I'm too inconsistent with fertilizing/watering or my little garden bed just isn't in a good spot.

You described the perfect mater sammich. This is exactly how I build/make mine. I spread a decent layer of Dukes on both pieces of bread and load it down with pepper. Preferably a better boy tomato with lots of slimy seeds.

I don't have much of a sunny backyard due to tree cover, so I let my dad handle the growing part on my behalf.
Sweet millions cherry tomatoes, early girls, better boys, parks whoppers. I add in a few purple Cherokees, Mr stripeys, and yellow globe heirlooms.
