Tomato Sammiches

I don't grow my own yet, but I plan on doing it next year. My parents will give me some of theirs every time I visit them. Nothing beats fresh homegrown tomatoes.

American cheese is trash. The only time it's even tolerable is when it's melted onto a much more delicious meat product.

Come at me, bro.

I agree. I don't eat American cheese on much of anything. But on a mater sammich, it's pretty damn good.

My Father in-law raises 150 acres of bacca. He has a green thumb and always plants two long rows of maters, cukes, peppers, onions, beans and corn. He also plants a few hills of watermelons and "mush" or musk melons aka cantaloupe. I always think about planting me a few tomato plants. Then I think....why? All I need to do is jump on the ATV or send the kids to raid their garden. Life it good right now, no time for supper. No problem. Just grab a couple of maters and bread and we are set.

Speaking of summertime sammiches, who else does cucumber sammiches? Same simplicity - just mayo, cukes and salt and pepper. Or if you need more, do a cucumber and pimento cheese sammich.

On a related note, anyone that serves cucumbers with the skin still on them should be locked up.

My grandma use to eat a cuke sammich. She also ate an occasional onion sammich, same concept. I've never tried either of those. However, we did use to slice a potato, fry them in a skillet and eat tater biscuits or tater sammiches. Replace the mayo with ketchup. Very tasty.

Growing up, we would pick our maters just before they where ripe. We had a pump house with a lean to top. We would spread them out to finish ripening. Lived on mater sandmichs
We also canned our maters. Nothing better than fresh sausage, grits topped with home canned maters.

LOL! There is a difference between Retneck and Country. Fine line for some, but I was raise country. Not as country as my Dad, but we learned a lot of the old fashioned ways.

I completely agree. Today's version of redneck does match what I grew up with. Country definately. How many grew up with pumphouses with lean to tops?

We put up tomatoes, corn, okra (oakry), squash and Dixie Lee peas. I hate picking butter beans so I don't grow them. I grow cukes but we don't pickle them because I just like the store-bought better.

LOVE tomato sandwiches. I grew up on Kraft mayo and still use it to this day. My mom tells me that, as kids, my dad would feed me n my brothers spoonfuls of mayo.

Anybody out there eat any banana and mayo sandwiches? I do peanut butter and banana too. Sometimes when I'm feeling frisky I'll put mayo on one side and peanut butter on the other.

I'm well aware of the backlash this may bring and couldn't care less.

I grew up on Duke's but the HH6 prefers Kraft and since I was gone so often that's what was always at the house. I love banana sammiches, btw.

I'm with you, Toophly. I do peanut butter on one side, Duke's on the other, and as much banana as I can fit. For a twist, crumble up some BBQ Lays potato chips on top of the bananas.
When I was a chap, I used to have pickle sandwiches made with my grandmother's bread and butter pickles, and Dukes. Also apple sandwiches- slices of red delicious apples with........Dukes. Anyone catching a theme here?

Bananas are disgusting. It's one of those things I really want to like because they're convenient and healthy, but the last time I tried to eat one, I gagged and lost my lunch. The flavor, the texture, and everything about them is absolutely horrendous.

So just to be clear...we have a bunch of Duke's fans on this board...but if you're from up north, it's safe to assume you're NOT a Duke's fan. Interesting.

Banana and peanut butter sammiches are the bomb. The banana is a favorite fruit of mine because as @coolwaterunc stated, they're convenient. I keep a jar of peanut butter in my office and breakfast for me on many mornings is a banana with peanut butter. Love it.

If we're going out there with food combinations, I used to eat bologna and peanut butter sammiches. They sound awful and I was skeptical at first too. But then I tried it and it was pretty amazing.

Home grown mater on soft white bread with duke's mayo and pepper. Some vidalia onion and baby cukes soaking in apple cider vinegar as an accompanimeinmentment
Game, set, match. This is the way my Grandparents did it for me when I was growing up in NC. My kids thought I was nuts when I tried it on them. They are believers now.

And the only mayo is Duke's. Anything else and you just effed it all up.
