TOS says Mack

Yes - and they would not run it unless it were 100%.

There are problems with the 2nd go around of any coach at the same school - I've noted Johnny Majors at Pitt. But if Mack were to bring back Chizik and get Kingsbury as OC, then our staff suddenly would be as well known nationally as any in ACC history.

I don't hate it. Program has a ways to go to get back to respectability and, it appears, to regain some shine on the recruiting trail. Mac will be one of very few active coaches with a ring (and another championship game appearance) and he and a good staff give me as much confidence as any of the other options. Wouldn't have hated Satterfield either. Will definitely be interesting.

Yea if he brings chizik and kingsbury thats arguably the strongest staff in the acc

Brown is tenth all time in wins
2 time coach of the year
Has one natty and played for another
Owned nc recruiting

***15-0 last 5 seasons vs in state foes**

Not gonna say its a “homerun” but given our situation and what he brings it seems pretty close.

I'm not super excited about this. We could have done worse, but I worry that recruits will be hesitant to commit because Mack will be a short term guy. Who he hires as his staff is going to be extremely important. I'm a little surprised that Bubba pulled the trigger on this. It almost feels like the boosters told him that he had to do it if he wanted them to pay for the buyout.

Well MACK IS BACK!!!! It is not my first choice BUT IF he assembles an outstanding group of coaches...which I believe he will...then lets get behind him and this team GO TAR HEELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This ^. This wasnt just decided after Fedora was fired yesterday. This all happened too quickly not to have been planned well in advance. And that's OK. UNC will surely win the press conference with this hire. And no doubt Mack will put together a good staff. The only thing that really concerns me is recruiting. At Mack's age, he will obviously be a short term coach. One only needs to look at what happened to recruiting at USC when Spurrier let it slip that he was only going to coach another year, or two. The bottom fell out, and they still haven't recovered. My only hope is that with the things you are hearing, that Chizik, will be the head coach in waiting, that he brings legitimacy from his NC at Auburn.

to echo the sentiments above, I'm not terribly excited about the hire but also not mad about it. I have concerns given Mack's age, and worry that in 5-7 years minimum we will be back looking for another coach. there's no doubt, he is the most decorated coach we would have gotten. i'll say this, and I hope that Mack is incredibly successful the 2nd go around here. Given Fedora's $12MM buyout, and then if this Mack 2.0 tanks, Bubba should be canned.

I don't hate it either, see we have a lot of relationship re-building that now has to occur with NC high school coaches, we need to own our base once again. Mac can come in, rebuild that and hand it over to a guy that will give us a long term run. I think this has been in the works for a while, Mac has spent a good bit of time in NC recently.

This is a good hire..the man is a winner. Plenty of energy and will mentor thr "next guy"..

Also, the suggestion that Kingsbury and Chezik come back makes it better...

Well done

Agreed all around. I think this has been in the planning for a year, or more - planning at least by some boosters. Yes, Mack has been in not just NC but Chapel Hill quite a few times over the past 18 months or so.

Thing played under Brown right? I can't imagine Brown would get rid of him. I think Pap has already been given a pink slip.
Yes indeed, Thig was one of Mack's best UNC LBs - he had a nose for the ball, and always played the position with sound fundamentals.

Papuchis is a sound coach, and everything I know indicates that Chizik respects him. I think his time as DC must be evaluated after knowing the Strange Case of Vic Koenning. Before being Fedora's DC, Koening looked like a very good DC. While Fedora's DC, Koenning looked like the worst DC in the ACC and perhaps UNC history. Being DC once again not under Fedora, and Koenning looks very good once again.

The Occam's Razor explanation? Fedora and his offense make his DCs look bad.

Papuchis under the right HC could be a very good DC. Papuchis as Associate DC under DC Chizik could be part of a superb D staff.

I like it he has brought us from the basement out before he is the right man for the job the key is when he does get us out of the basement and then retires they have got to make the right hire to replace him and keep moving along.

Go Heels

I don't think Chizik will return to work under Papuchis....

I definitely like the idea of Kingsbury as our OC thiough....

I wonder if Scott Satterfield would be interested in the OC job as a possible HC in waiting?

Like others, I'm very interested to see who Mack chooses as his DC and OC....

The key to the Mack hire working will be the succession plan. Obviously Mack isn't the long-term solution at 67, but he can benefit the program by improving the talent on the roster, providing stability and creating some success. If he brings in the right guy to be the Coach-in-Waiting, this could work out well.

I can agree with that. The long term success of this move is going to be determined by the staff he hires.

If Chizik comes back, it will be as Associate HC/co-DC (meaning he is actually the DC). I think Papuchis might be happy to be made co-DC under Mack and Chizik.

Kingsbury would be a remarkable OC hire. He was coached by Leach, and he worked for Kevin Sumlin, who is not the most successful HC but can draw a lot of QB talent. Kingsbury is the guy who worked directly with both Case Keenam (who had been recruited to Houston by Art Briles) and Johnny Manziel (who'd been recruited by the previous Aggie staff). 3 of the QBs Kingsbury brought to and coached at Texas Tech are now in the NFL.

I doubt Satterfield would want such an arrangement.

I can see this as a 3-4 year job for Mack. Having a few (hopefully) strong recruiting classes and then let one of his assistants take over the program long-term.

If we had followed Mack with a good hire rather than Torbush, things would have been much better than we've had. And as FSU began to fall flat in 2001, if we'd replaced Mack with the right coach, UNC football would have been set up to win the ACC and assume lead dog spot for the conference.

Mack wasn't my first choice, but I do think this could work. And besides, when the program hits rock bottom, there's really only one direction it can go. I'm interested to see how the rest of the coaching staff comes together.

Occam's Razor changes depending on your bias. Cuz my explanation is talent. Inherited bad talent, then had trouble getting quantity and getting guys to stick during NCAA yrs, recently the "good" talent either left early for pros (Nazair, Andre) or was injured (Andre/Powell in 2017), (Crawford, Sails, Cotman, Dalton) in 2018.

Our linebackers were walk-ons since Withers. That's a personnel problem, not a scheme problem.

You are only as strong as your weakest link, and our front 7 has had weak linebackers and/or were young/undersized on the DL for the entire Fed era, partly due to his DT recruiting approach, but partly due to bad luck.

Rumor has it that UNC has also reached out to 84 year old Dick Crum, just in case the Mack Brown rehire doesn’t go so well.

I don't think it has been recruiting as much as a drop-off in coaching that has hampered the Gamecocks in recent years. Review the ranking of their recruiting classes over the past eight years, including the current 2019 class, according to Rivals and ESPN.

Spurrier's last four seasons coaching at USC:
2012 - 19th (Rivals), 16th (ESPN)
2013 - 16th (Rivals), 18th (ESPN)
2014 - 16th (Rivals), 19th (ESPN)
2015 - 19th (Rivals), 21st (ESPN)

Spurrier's first season not at the helm but for the most part his recruiting class:
2016 - 26th (Rivals), 27th (ESPN)

Since Spurrier left:
2017 - 16th (Rivals), 19th (ESPN)
2018 - 18th (Rivals), 18th (ESPN)
2019 - 20th (Rivals), 18th (ESPN)

South Carolina has recruited as well since Spurrier left as when he was coaching them.

Fedora’s offense made our defense look worse than it ever really was. Think about it. Our offense is great when it’s gettinf yards in bunches but if not, you are usually looking at 3 and outs that last maybe 2 minutes. That equals lots of downs on short rest for a defense over 4 quarters. That’s not easy.

Since the "Return of the Mack" t-shirts are available for purchase, I feel sure this was in the works for a while.

Where can I buy one?....It's now christmas in more ways than one if you know what I mean....

I'll definitely wear me a Tar Heel shirt that says "Return of the Mack" on the front and "The Ceiling is the Roof" on the back of the shirt....

The perfect Christmas gift this year!
