Wow... they got hammered. And this is in addition to the penalties they placed on themself a couple years ago. Looks like for the first time the NCAA may take down a championship banner.

And the Carolina haters are salivating right now.
Yep, they sure are. They think our banner is next to come down now that the NCAA has shown willingness to do what they just did to UL. I don't think it will but I have no idea what crap the NCAA will try to do.

Am I missing something? You guys are saying they are getting hammered but all I see is a few scholarship reductions and pitino missing some games. I guess theres a possibility a banner could come down but it really doesnt look all that bad.

a vacation of basketball records in which student-athletes competed while ineligible from December 2010 and July 2014; men’s basketball scholarship reductions and recruiting restrictions; a fine of $5,000, plus the university must return money received through conference revenue sharing for its appearances in the 2012 to 2015 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championships.

this is also what they got. Not just a slap on the wrist

So they are taking down the banner. plus they already self imposed a one year ban.

This is a wrist slap.
Well, that's bit more than a wrist-slap for McGee. A 10year show-cause means his career in college hoops is effectively done.

That being said, Bruce Pearl got a 3-year show-cause for an illegal cook-out. One could legitimately ask how then Pitino comes out of Louisville's over-the-top shenanigans with only a suspension? I suppose he managed to have plausible deniability vis-vis the strippers.

Yeah, I should've put in more research time. 4 Year Probation. And the 2013 Title is still up for grabs. Definitely not a wrist slap

Louisville fans have maintained that Pitino didn't know about any of this, so maybe there was some leverage to that.

There is nothing saying that a banner will be taken down....only money given back.

1- Who were the ineligible players?

2- Did they play in the title game?

Louisville has 45 days to report the ineligible players to the ncaa... which is a joke. Like the ncaa doesn't know who was ineligible. The head hooker named like 3-4 players that started in the title game so in theory the banner should come down.

There was no explicit naming of the banner, but Louisville has to vacate games between 2010 and 2014 in which players were playing. Montrezl Harrell, Behanan and Russ Smith were all on the title team and mentioned in the book by Katina Powell.

The rule, however, is that the games can only be vacated for the players that "had an impact on the game". So there is a slim possibility that it may not be affected. But IIRC, Behanan and Smith were very important parts of the National Championship game.

Very true gary, and very unfair.
I know a former asst who got a deal like this back in the 80"s and never coached again. While the big name HC got a slap on the wrist.

McGee should talk, and name "names".

There's a "pimp" currently on dook's bench who is just as dirty as McGee.

Louisville has to tell the NCAA in 45 days which players received benefits and which games/wins to vacate. Basically, they led the horse to water and are saying, "Here's what happened, now you tell us what happened, and you take that banner down yourself."

I listened to the AD, Rick, and the attorney in their response press conference. Rick said the punishment doesn't fit the crime (while heinous and disgusting, only totaled $5k in "benefits" and had no actual impact on actual recruiting) and metaphorically dropped the mic by ending the presser by saying "We will fight this to the end"

Now THAT would be interesting.
One does wonder, now that you mention it, if he's being "taken care of" to ensure that doesn't happen ...

The only thing that worries me with our case is the freakin erratic NCAA and Greg Sankey's ulterior motives. With an organization like the NCAA who won't even follow their own bylaws, it is completely unpredictable what punishment they may try to give Carolina.

Doesn't matter...it won't stick. Stankey and the NCAA have botched it and UNC knows it.

Isn't there a Kentucky/SEC guy running the infractions committee?

Hell, Cam Newton was paid 100k to comr to Auburn and he was ruled eligible in 5 days or something.

4 Year Probation.
What does this mean?

Are they banned from postseason play for 4 years?

Or are they just being told "don't do it again for 4 years"?

Losing 1 scholarship per year for 4 years is nothing. Most teams don't have a full roster every year and do just fine with only 11 or 12 scholarship players.

Pitino missing 5 conference games will possibly make it harder to win the conference regular season - which they have a good chance at this year. So that could be non-trivial. But it might not make a difference. Sort of depends on which teams they play first.

Loss of a championship would be extremely embarrassing. But would it really hurt them going forward? You sort of have to have a good reputation before tarnishing it matters, don't you?

So . . . if the banner comes down, does that mean Michigan is the 2013 champ? Or is there no champ?

Do the players have to go back to the pawn shops and get their championship rings back?

That would be Beilein's only championship. Better than none, but a sad way to get it.

No champ. The NCAA doesn't retroactively award titles.

So . . .

A trivial reduction of scholarships.

A 5-game suspension for Pitino.

Maybe a loss of some wins including a championship.

Unless they lose the championship, this is a fairly easy penalty.
