Congrats on the title guys. As much as I like the recruiting success Duke has had, there is something special to having a group of upperclassmen stick it out and take over the reigns. Each year guys like Meeks and Jackson got better and better and i'm sure it's fun to watch them grow up. Also props to Roy for doing an underrated job with this group.

tough crowd. obviously i agree with you all that the 1924 pre-ncaa should count in our total championships. however, using that in in arguments with abc'ers is easily countered by equating modern college basketball to the ncaa era. but after last nite -- using ncaa titles only -- we have clear superiority over dook basketball. don't know about you, but that means something to me. so, unless you're preaching to the choir i recommend 6>5.

depends on how you look at it. Most everyone only counts NCAA National Championships. UNC = 6, 'Dook' = 5, etc. Example; Kentucky has 8 NCAA National Championships. We have 8 National Champ Banners in hanging in Rupp Arena. But we also won 7 Helms titles which if we counted them, we would have 15 championships. But UK dosnt have those banners hanging anywhere in Rupp Arena or the practice facilities. I think mainly counting NCAA national championships is what most go by, regardless of the size of the tournament field because that has changed as well over the years. But like the poster said, either way, you can leave out the helms titles now and you have more than Duke, which is a win no matter how you argue it. lol

1924 is nice and all, but I think you gotta go with 6.

In any case, I'm not worried about Duke. Balance has been restored to the force. All is well.

That '24 banner is just as meaningful, ask the handful of schools that received them. It was the standard of the era. The banner hangs in the Smith Center. My grandfather was on that team, I was a very little kid but I met some of those legends. It matters to me, it mattered to my grandfather, to his team and it matters to the University, so I'm solidly in the 7 group.

Notable among the pre-tournament era selections, and listed in the Official NCAA Men's Basketball Records Book, are those from the Helms Athletic Foundation.[4] The Helms Foundation named a national champion from 1901 to 1982, with its selections from 1901 to 1941 being awarded retroactively. The Helms champion, for the years in which the NIT and NCAA post-season tournaments were played, reflected the winners of the 1938 NIT and 1939 NIT, as well as the winners for all years of the NCAA Tournament except for 1939, 1940, 1944 and 1954.[5] Most recently, the retroactive end-of-year Premo-Porretta Power Poll has provided the first national rankings of college basketball teams for the 1895–96 through the 1947–48 seasons.[6] (No regular, recognized national polling took place prior to the establishment of the Associated Press Poll and the Coaches Poll for college basketball prior to the 1948–49 and 1950–51 seasons, respectively.[7]) The Premo-Porretta rankings were published in 2009 in the ESPN College Basketball Encyclopedia. As with the Helms selections, the Premo-Porretta poll recognized the 1938 and 1939 NIT Champions as national champions; in addition to 1939, the poll's national championship selections differed from the results of the NCAA Tournament in 1941, 1943, 1944, 1945, and 1947.[8]

You need to work on your history or your "maff" , not sure which.

Helms Foundation awarded NC's 1900-1982.UK has 2 "Helms" championships that don't overlap NCAA championships the 32-33 season and the 53-54 season. You could claim 10 but not 15 ; you know the "maff" thing. In the 1953-1954 season UK and LSU were both 14-0 in the SEC , but Kentucky was 25-0 and #1 for most of the season in the AP and in the final poll , but LSU went to the NCAAT that season because UK elected not to because 3 star plays were ruled ineligible because they had already graduated(rule has since been changed). Rupp made the decision not to play , despite the players wishes Soooo I think it is a bit disingenuous to claim an NC when you refused to play in an available tournament and there was a NCAA champ crowned. The 1923-24 and the 1932-33 seasons had no tournaments so Helms is pretty much all we got. 1924 UNC won the old Southern Conference basketball tournament which was played in Atlanta(beating Kentucky in the 1st round) and finishing 25-0. In 1932-33 the first season that the SEC existed after splitting off from the Southern Conference , UK won the tournament and finished 21-3. I can see UK claiming 9 NC's but not 10 (UK refused to play in the tournament) and UNC is legit in claiming the 23-24 as UK is the 32-33 so all in all it is just a wash.

Note: the ACC was not allowed to play in the NIT from 1954-1966

Also could you imagine the old Southern Conference tournament today? I wonder how much TV would pay for that. It was 16 games.

Let the haters climb on up and take down the '24 banner and while they are at it take down the jerseys of Cobb and Carmichael, they will find they are in a very small minority not supporting the Heels of that era or our 7 National Championships.
