Unc Vs. Iowa

We didn't play that way in the second half and gave up even more points.

50 in the second half to 43 in the 1st half.
You're not adjusting for possessions. There were an absolute ton of possessions in the second half. Anyway, we certainly faded when the bigs got in foul trouble. Not arguing that.

Way too careless with the basketball. God awful entry passing. We refuse to guard the perimeter. Garza wasn’t all he was cracked up to be in my opinion. Not a terrible game for our young kids.

We've

Did I say we outplayed them in the second half? I said we'd have been up 15 in the middle of the second half, before they went on the 14-0 run to be clear. With a decent first half offensively our big run to start the second half would've put us way ahead.
I mean, yeah. But, if the score is different we or them may come out different also. It's kind of a moot hypothetical.

In the least surprising news of the night, we allowed them to set a school record for 3’s. I’m sure nobody is shocked with how Roy’s teams do not guard the 3 point line.

Roy will never call timeouts and he will never defend the 3.

So, as a Heels fan, it's best to resign yourself to those facts.

If Iowa makes 17 threes they are unbeatable!

We just proved we can play with anyone that was the #3 team on their floor. I expected us to lose but I thought it was going to be ugly, and it was respectable. We have big things ahead!
Yeah... when you have a team hit that many, it's impossible to win. UNC was ahead midway through the second half.

I count 77 possessions for us in this game. 78 for Iowa.

We had 80/77 = 1.04 points per possession
Iowa had 93/78 = 1.19 points per possession

Kenpom adjusted ratings coming into the game:

UNC O / D = 108.8 / 87.8
Iowa O / D = 115.6 / 93.8

So looks like we underperformed on both ends. Still though, the first half probably had like 35 possessions. Our offense rating was pretty bad. Just far too many turnovers and missed shots.

Sure. My point though is we put ourselves in such a big hole. It's just hard to be so bad on offense for most of a half and win against a really good team. We had something like 20 points in 15 minutes. The defense wasn't good either, no doubt.

Love's third air ball tonight. Really hard to understand this.

And when we were down double digits in the 1st half I thought it could turn real ugly!!! This team continued to battle though

Turnovers were key 18 to only 10 for Iowa. We lose handily by double digits while outscoring them +4 at the free throw line, and were + 16 on 2 point attempts.

Iowa outscored us by 33 from 3 point land... - 33 !!

Again more tos, missed shots We miss a TON of easy around the basket shots and of course our lack of 3 ball defense is glaring

Feeling pretty sure at least Kessler will be here multiple years. Sure hope RJ is too! :)

The young fellas will grow with experience, as I said after Texas the TO's and dee should improve drastically by tournament time. My main concern is the shooting, and lack of 3 point production.

It's a catch 22, we struggle, but 9,12,15 attempts in games leaves little room for error in the other areas. Have to get better and gain confidence shooting.

We ended up shooting 40% from 3, as ugly as some misses looked. They were only 42%. Our 40% takes 60% on our 2's to equal that output. They put up 40 attempts, we put up 15.

Sharpe was huge tonight if he learns to play without fouling he is a beast!

On another note Dook looks worse than us and they are at home.

Again it appeared that way. They were 17-40 on 3's 42.5%. We were 6-15 on 3's 40%. Volume was the big difference that made them look like they shot lights out.

Yes. We have to make teams shoot 2's. If they missed 1 more 3 they were 16-40 identical shooting percent 40 as ours from 3. We have bigs who can rim protect, have to limit 3 point looks.

I hate to harp on it, but our philosophy on utilizing and guarding the 3 point line leaves us little room for error in all the other areas.
We got outscored by 33 from 3 point line. I think vs Texas we got outscored by 24. Like you said those leave zero margin for error.

At some point, that will be Roy's ultimate undoing--- poor 3-pt defending. Auburn in the NCAA T, and a litany of teams before and since. The losses will stack-up too high, eventually.

These missed FTs and turnovers are inexcusable as well... game after game. The poor FT shooting is something UNC is now famous for.

Interesting Roy said in post we were not supposed to be doubling Garza at all, but some of our guys were doing it anyway (hence many of the 3’s to start the game).

Perhaps I have a different take on this game. As much as a L bothers me and probably will prevent me from falling asleep tonight, I feel our guys learned a great deal tonight and grew up to a certain degree. We could have easily been blown out but effort brought us back into the game. The youngsters seemed to be making better decisions and Platek and Black both contributed in a meaningful way with aggressive play. At this point in the season I would rather have progression and learning than a W as strange as that may seem. We made some progress tonight and for that we should be pleased. The wins will come.

And by the way Garza doesn't impress me that much. His right elbow had 4 fouls, his left had another 3. And he charged into whoever was defending him.

agree. I honestly thought he was garbage. Dude was allowed to just run over people and hook them all night. He took a ton of shots to get his 16.

Then the miscommunication is bad. To be fair to the players, UNC doubles down and helps out on the drive every game so it was probably embedded in them. That philosophy was good tho, for the 1980s.

Yeah 1 less 3 by them would make same percentage, but you have to be crazy to think one little stretch of 4 made 3s by us could turn into a 16 for 40 game. Id bet everything i have this team would not do that over a whole game this year.

I do not want to see us hoisting up 40 3's either, just saying we have to be cognizant of sometimes it is better dee to allow a semi contested 10 foot shot, rather then a comfortable look from 20 or 22 feet.

Iowa shot well, but were not lights out from 3, they were allowed to get off a high volume of comfortable looks, which makes 40 % equal a +33 point advantage.
