UNC vs Tennessee Game Thread

The Heels will lose to Kentucky without Berry. Next topic.

Odd that Robinson isn't getting any run.

He got 17 minutes tonight, 5th most on the team.(tied with Maye) . . and more minutes than Hicks & Meeks.(16 & 14).

I like BRob's game an awful lot . . he just seems to know how to play the dayum game.

3/5 FG . . 6 points . . 3 rebs . . 3 assists . . 0 TOs

Without our PG, we once again shot poorly and compounded it by missing a ton of FT's. Despite that, our second half defense was stellar and we gutted out a win. All three Freshmen made solid contributions.

Britt looks like a lesbian
Unbelievably poor taste post, only BB would give you a "like".

We might have Joel back for UK. Regardless, let's play before we concede.

Seems clear to me that Bradley is going to take most of Luke's minutes when it gets to conference play time.... and hopefully we'll have Pinson back near the start of conference play, too. Way fewer minutes relying on Britt and Maye.

I thought he might possibly start at SG if Theo didn't. Kenny has played well and is great defensively, but Brandon showed he is an ACC player today with a nice overall stat line. We wouldn't have won without the Freshmen.

Britt actually had a fairly decent game . . 4/14 from the floor . . I'd like to see that improve. 7 assists . . 5 steals . . 3TOs.

Yeah, I still think the offense just isn't smooth with him running the show but he did some good things tonight except for the shooting. I think it has to just be in his head. Maybe those last couple of minutes broke him out of it. Those steals were huge. 5 steals is a ton for one game.

Yeah, I meant in the second half, though as soon as I said that he came in of course, haha.

Britt made some solid key plays especially at the end! Overall I thought he played well even though he didn't shoot the ball good. I agree that Robinson played really well! The freshmen played pretty good for the most part! That move woods had was awesome. Sometimes I think he tries to do to much and gets in trouble! He will fix that with more experience! We shot awful and still found a way to win. Now time to get ready for Kentucky! I wanna beat them so bad

I think coach does things that we call "stupid ish" just because he, as always, uses the early season to evaluate his team and challenge the younger players. Did the Tennessee game suck from a UNC standpoint ? Absolutely. Was this an incredibly ugly game, especially in the first half .. bad as I've seen lately. But at the end of the game we got a win and saw some really good things from the upcoming class. Seventh is gonna be really good .. he almost has MJ athleticism ..just wait.. Tony Bradley is already really good .. Kenny Williams is a really good defender and if he makes 4 yrs. he may well make top 40 in points scored. It was another ugly game but it was a win ..and Rick Barnes is a really good recruiter and coach .. I look for TN to be in the dance this year .. and break some hearts .. they do have some talent !

All in all, we won so I'll take it. Better to win on your worst night than to lose. In saying that....

Nate Britt absolutely killed us. I respect the optimism around highlighting his defense with 5 steals because he showed up in spurts on that end for sure however he gave Tennessee just as many opportunities with his piss poor shot selection. That young man should never shoot 14 times in 1 game in a Carolina uniform ever again. Justin Jackson is showing why folks across the country and in the league can't get on board with him being a big time player on a consistent basis. He simply comes and goes. One thing that he is killing us with is on the backboards. He got beat on at least 3 box outs that resulted in Tennessee put backs. That's been his norm all year as even Roy has said over and over he must be better rebounding to
Get where he wants to go and for us to get where we want to go. Luke Maye isn't very good. He gives us effort and rebounds good for his size but that's where it ends. Limited offensively and a liability on defense. My mind continues to be blown at the fact that Tony Bradley can't get ALL of his minutes. I keep hearing the bullshit about Roy will play him more come conference time. That is stupid and illogical. Play him now and let him develop so come conference times he'll be ready to rock. That in itself is why the top tier of recruits do not entertain UNC on a serious level any more. They know that almost defiantly Roy will play some fill in the blank less talented upperclassmen in front of a far superior freshman. we also must get more from Meeks and Hicks. As Roy said, they have given us nothing these last few games, nothing. Meeks is just Meeks. Same ol shit different year. No lift no energy just ho hum. Hicks is improved but still terribly low basketball IQ. He will spin himself out of a point blank lay up and then on the other end, fall for a ball fake 20 feet out from a guy who can't shoot a lick. Just bonehead stupid shit. I hope that nights like tonight make us realize just how limited our depth is in terms of quality. With JB back, we can go 7 deep and be Ok. That's all I've got. Had to get that off my chest.

Excellent post. Many things said well with point blank honesty, may not go over too well with some here but it was refreshing to read.

How did we win with Isaiah, JJ, and Nate shooting a combined 9 for 26? Good grief! Combine that with 12% from long distance and a mere 54% from the line and we were lucky to prevail. Our 2nd half defense and greater intensity made the difference. Roy chewed some butt with about 5 minutes to go in the 1st half and we were a different team.

Is there any doubt how much Joel means to us? He sets the tone offensively and defensively.

Joel has to be the most valuable player in America. Not sure any other team inside the top 5-10 has a single player more important to their overall success.

Would like to see Bradley replace Meeks in the starting lineup and get more athletic in the low post. Meeks will still get plenty of burn given Isaiah's propensity to foul but would his confidence get shaken if he had to come off the bench.

Meeks is about as sensitive and fragile as a female on her period. So yes it would affect him greatly to come off the bench.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid it would shatter the young man's already shaky confidence. I think he's seeing his dreams of playing at the next level possibly disappearing due to his lack of athleticism. That's got to be tough, but then life is tough. Pullin' hard for him and Isaiah to finish strong.
Tony - 10 pts, 10 Boards (7 Offensive) and BRob - 6 Pts, 3 Assists both deserve shoutouts

7th... well, he air-balled 2 layups and turned it over 3 times in 8 minutes. On the other hand he completed two highlight plays that showed what his potential is. Thing is, that potential will not likely be fulfilled at PG. Kid is an athletic slasher and scorer --- he's just not cut out to be a primary ball-handler and play-maker. Again, I totally understand the experiment and Roy trying to build future depth since we can theoretically lose all of our PGs after this season. But he's getting fewer and fewer minutes at Point for a reason.
I agree with your assessment that he's more of a combo guard than a pure PG. I also agree with your reason why Roy is giving him time there. If Joel leaves, he may be our only option to back up Jalek at point. Regardless of where 7th plays down the road, experience at the point will only serve to make him a better player. He simply must tighten up his handle and take better care of the ball.

ETA: I think he would thrive in a dribble drive offense where the court was spread and he could take his man one on one. He is quick as a cat.

Smells ain't deceivin'...

Yep . . . claims he's a longtime reader, joins on game-day and only posts in the game thread, mentions dOOk and kentucky, takes a swipe at one of our players and cries about the refs (out of habit I 'spose) all in his 4 posts.

You can see 'em a mile away . . . then the stench arrives.

FWIW...Lots of juice on twitter yesterday after the game with Bradley getting the most from what I saw. If that stuff matters having a freshman front and center can only be a good thing I would think.

WoW, a lot there to discuss, noticed you posted this at 9:30 last night, may want to hold off till the next morning to post after a game you upset over, gives you a lil time to chill out some, emotions can be to high right after a game, I know this really helps me.

On Nate, to me nate should shoot the ball 5 or 6 times a game, felt he did back off on some of his questionable shots in that second half but he did take a couple of just really bad shots for him in that second half. His quick hands were very important and resulted in those huge steals, was not just the number of them but when they happened were vital for our coming back in this game. Justin was pretty bad on both ends in this one, I think he and wanda had pretty much the same total of rebounds but her nanna puddin is way better. I issued a bolo for Hicks, hopefully he can be found before we travel to Vegas.

Meeks is what he is but for all that is holy, PLEASE stop wading down in to the lane and camping out, it clogs up the lane and takes away any ability to find cutters. I am expecting Roy to stop play one of these days and take a chair out just outside the lower block and tell meeks to sit in it, heck, if you ain't gonna move ya may as well be comfy while ya camped out in that painted area. At least with Luke we get work, he does not have the talent but at least he works when he is in there.

Got to give BRob and Tony shout outs, both gave us a lift when we really needed it, Kenny was solid both ends and always plays hard.

Bradley needs more time for sure but he also needs to rebound better on the defensive end. He is a beast on the offensive boards though. I agree with those who think his time will increase as the year goes on though.

I agree. He's averaged 11 attempts per game in Joel's absence. That's simply too many, especially since his shot selection leaves a lot to be desired.

He really is a poor rebounder for a guy his size. Kenny is much better on the boards, especially when you consider that he is often farther away from the basket. Poor JJ couldn't throw it in the ocean and as a result, started forcing up bad shots. He should know better.
Meeks is what he is but for all that is holy, PLEASE stop wading down in to the lane and camping out, it clogs up the lane and takes away any ability to find cutters.
Amen. And he was making himself small again last night by bringing the ball down, using multiple pump fakes, and positioning himself too low under the basket. He too should know better by now.

Indeed. Even 7th showed flashes of brilliance, albeit coupled with 3 TO's in 8 minutes. Once the game slows down just a tad for these guys, as it had to for Kenny, they are going to be very good players.

As for your BOLO on Isaiah, I had to laugh. He has the potential to be such a dominant player but has too many games where he doesn't utilize all that potential. He was in foul trouble last night, with his 5th being BS, but he's got to post up stronger and play with better basketball IQ.

Nate should keep shooting. Some things he should stop shooting is the long 2s and any non wide open 3s.

Can't just become an offensive void. Just needs a better shot selection.

Britt killed the team...please 11 points, 5 steals and 7 assists...It is a good thing that Coach Williams trust his players because many who could not wear Nate Britt's jock do not. No problem being critical of a ball player but just once in a while give credit even if it hurts your couch potato ego.
