UNC vs Wofford GAME THREAD

Just. Damn.

First we let them abuse the press to score and then JB gets an offensive foul on the other end. Under a minute and we are down 3.

Shot clock violation to get the stop. Now we need to attack the basket and score. Don’t throw up a 3 unless it is all we have

Luke misses the 3 and Wofford has the ball again. No shot clock. Need a steal now

I want Cam to get a shot from 3
How about no - an absolute embarrassment. This collection of players is short enough on talent and experience that games like these are capable of happening unfortunately - congratulations on being woffords first ever top ten win

Called it we lost how embarrassing we should have beaten this team by at least 15. We weren't ready to play and it showed we acted as if top 5 was our we have arrived ranking I bet we fall all the way out of the top 10 and we deserve it

If you have a number by your team name, there is zero excuse for losing at home to wofford. Not a bad team, but nowhere near as good as even an NIU or Bucknell. A complete embarrassment

It's hilarious that there was a thread about us being a #1 seed I believe? This team sucks. We've known that but a few wins have made people think they're something that they're not. Mediocre team. Hopefully Sweet 16..hopefully.

I thought the #1 seed talk was ridiculous. The strong start gave some a false sense of who we are.

This team doesn't "suck". It's a good team, just not a great one. We're not as talented as we normally are, so we can't just brute force our way through bad games with raw talent.

I can't believe we didn't show up my wife is even making jokes I had to tell her that's enough and I actually had to leave for a minute

Wofford would have beaten a lot of teams tonight.

Not really.

Wofford shot 21-42 (50%) from 2 and 7-22 (31.8%) from 3. Nothing special.

Magee, their star player, shot 6-11 from 2 and 4-12 from 3. Again, nothing special.

This wasn't a "they're hitting everything, nothing you can do" type of game. This was our offense completely collapsing against one of the worst defenses we'll see all year.

Wofford earned the win. That being said, I never expected a loss to a Wofford but expected a loss or 2 or 3 this year against a team we should beat simply because our ceiling can be high, however, our floor is lower than we’d like it to be and that’s what we saw tonight. I thought Cam played well in his first game back. I don’t think it cost us the game but we outscore them by 10 over a 4 minutes stretch with the small lineup with Cam on the floor and Roy puts Brooks back in the game?! Also, the stretch where Jalek Felton entered the game in the 2nd half to give JB a breather absolutely bit us in the ass. JB leaves and we are down 4. He comes back in and we are down 12. Felton literally dropped the ball out of bounds, played matador defense which resulted in a wide open 3. Felton throws another bad pass that was headed out of bounds before hitting the backboard, Wofford 3. Felton missed 3. Wofford layup on dribble penetration. Also, we have some major issues offensively once we get into our bench. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, we have depth but not quality depth in terms of offensive output. Most kids that come off the bench for us have major offensive limitations and it kills us. We simply can’t beat anybody with a pulse with as many empty possessions as we had tonight.

I don't understand Maye shooting that 3 with 20 something seconds left when you have a chance to run the shot clock and game clock down to a few seconds. Try to get a look for Berry or Williams with 7 or so seconds on the shot clock to give yourself a chance at on offensive rebound. Even if Maye had made it, Wofford gets the last shot with plenty of time and is a great FT shooting team.

Bingo - this one is on us. Although their second half performance was better, but we invited that with our garbage play in all but six minutes of the game against a defense that was supposed to be their weakness

Deserved to lose.... no doubt about it.

We clearly did not value the ball ...way too many TOs Theo was awful, just terrible and all in all we had no business playing the way we did. This game also once again shows how vulnerable we are in the middle... our post d and offense is really not very good. Hopefully the team realizes NOW that we just cannot "show up" and expect to win

If we miss with 3 seconds left, it's game over.

If we miss with 20 seconds left, we still have a shot.

That's the rationale. Not sure which approach is optimal mathematically, but psychologically it feels better to still be in it no matter what.

To be fair I said with 7 seconds on the shot clock which would have been 9 on the game clock. If you hit rim it resets the shot clock and probably have 4 or 5 seconds after securing the rebound to find someone to shoot a 3. Plenty of time.

So is the hope of taking the shot with 25ish seconds to miss but get the offensive rebound?

When you're losing with under a minute to go, you always want to extend the game as much as possible

Sure and against certain teams I would agree even more. Wofford however is a good FT shooting team. You're not going to beat them fouling and hoping for them to miss the front end of a 1 and 1.

What were we extending also? Just giving them 20 some seconds to take the last shot of the game if we had made that 3.

And to be clear I'm not saying I'm right, and Roy or Luke or anyone else is wrong. In my mind nothing was gained with that shot in that situation but I'm not payed to coach nor was given a scholarship to play.

Even with Wofford getting the rebound, we still have multiple shots at stealing the ball (each with a low probability). We can also hope they miss the front end of the one-and-one. Or miss the 2nd, then we hit a 3, they make 2 FTs, then we hit another 3.

The idea is that regardless of the probabilities, you're still in it.

Like I said, I don't know what's actually optimal - just explaining the rationale.

Fair enough. It just sounds like a whole heck of a lot that has to go just right.

No excuse to lose to Wofford. Absolutely none.

Wasn't able to watch which was probably a good thing. So what happen? I really don't want to have to watch the DVr.

This game makes me feel like when Hampton came to the DES Ctr and beat us. I don't see this team being like that one but the pain is the same and the feeling of unacceptability is the same. We are Carolina and it was Wofford.

Listening to Berry give his thoughts after the game it almost sounded like he was blaming the young players. He keep saying they need to buy into the game plan and things like that. I didn't watch the game (and probably won't) but was wondering was this loss because of the young guys? Doesn't seem like anyone did that much.

We start 2 seniors, 2 juniors, and a freshman. The upperclassmen played like shit. Each and every one of them. To blame the youngsters is bullcrap. 39-34 rebound advantage over a team that plays 4 guards! Only 9 offensive rebounds. Can't blame that mess on the freshmen.
