USA TODAY says the best Q in North Carolina is....................

I was gonna say as a Goldsboro boy, I'm a little surprised that neither Wilbur's nor the Wilson places like Parkers or Bills made it on there.

Fairly good list but I don't think everyone on the list still cooks with wood and Stamey's is ranked way too high IMO

I haven't had Stamey's and I'm sure it's delicious, but it's not whole hog. B's and Skylight are.
Skylight is the best I've ever had with Wilbur's a close second. I have been trying to make it to B's for years but can't catch them open when I'm in the area. There's another good place in Adyen call Bum's, they have really good BBQ and the best Brunswick stew I've ever ate.

Parker's and Bills no longer cook with wood, I've been told.

I'd take Smiley's of Lexington 10 times over Lexington BBQ which is ALWAYS way overrated.

To me they are so close I would have a hard time picking but I think they are several eastern style places that beat them both.

If they aint cooking with wood it aint barbecue. Wilmington just had its first geniune wood cook barbecue open. Its a chain called dickeys and it beats the crap outta these gas places

To be a chain its dayum good! Their sides are off the hook. Jalapeno baked beans, baked potato casserole, mac n cheese, fried okra...not to mention genuine wood smoke q. Their beef brisquet is smoky tender melt in your mouth goodness. For lunch i get their mac n beef which is their mac n cheese with beef brisquet mixed in. I just have to make sure i set aside time for a nap afterwards.

Skylight is towards the top of my bucket list

Ayden. Same folks have also opened a new restaurant in Greenville (Sam Jones BBQ) which is very good. Has a newer feel and more menu options, including beer, but the 'cue is on point.
JukeZ, have you ever tried Bum's in Ayden? They cook with wood, their BBQ is excellent ( but not quite as good as Skylight), and the sides are a lot better than Skylight.

I'll be heading to Ocracoke in a few weeks and plan on checking Sam Jones BBQ out on the way down.

Tell me your kidding, please. And @Raising Heel, after all that good work you did yesterday you go and almost undo it with the single click of the like button.
I'll say this, Smithfield's is the best "Fast Food" BBQ I've ever had. It will do if you can't get any of the real stuff.

I can't believe you, of all people, poasted this. Places like Smithfield are the reason pre-shredded cheese exists.

Saying Smithfield has good cue is like saying McDonalds has good hamburgers.

Is the BBQ just as good as at Skylight?

I didn't say Smithfield's has good cue. I said they have good FAST FOOD cue. McDonald's don't server good hamburgers they server a fair FAST FOOD hamburger. The way I look at it, the fast food cue and the real stuff are two entirely different foods.

See I just don't see BBQ as fast food. Ever. It's cooking process alone doesn't at all fit the fast food model. So when you say it's good for fast food BBQ, to me you are just saying it's good BBQ. I suppose we could argue what fast food really is, but I don't think BBQ fits in that mold. Would you eat pre-shredded cheese if you didn't have a hunk of cheddar handy?

There aren't any especially good cue joints in Charlotte, so my standards are low. It's like banging a 4.
That's not a good comparison. You can always get good BBQ somewhere else. No need to eat bad/average BBQ. As far as women go, you can't get better than a 4.
