...and f*** dook.

- Some nights every shot, heave, throw-up --- you name it --- seems to go in. And it was dook's night. Maddeningly, that happened despite several spells of pretty damn good defensive work on our part.

- Speaking of defense, yesterday a friend asked me who I thought should guard Banchero. I answered "Leaky". Banchero scored exactly 1 point with Leaky guarding him. Jes sayin. With that said, with seemngly all their other guys unconscious, it didn't matter. Mostly, it didn't natter because (other than Manek) we couldn't throw it in the ocean from the dock, nor stop shooting ourselves in the foot doing generally stupid stuff.

- Finally, not to throw too many stones, but Lord knows I've endured watching way too many spells of bad UNC Guard play since 2018 (especially at Point) and Lord knows tonight was a big fat lowlight reel of that shizz. Bleah.

That's all I care to post. Rant away... over and out... and f*** dook.

Going in to this game the factors were almost AL against us. I kind of expected this one, sorry but I did.

This was K's last game in the Dean Dome, we beat duke twice last season and blew them out the last game, that has not been forgotten! UNC is down 2 of this season's top minute guys, one a starter, duke was not dealing with the loss of a single player than has been getting minutes for them. Caleb has not played well for a string of games now, if Bacot has to come out we have to replace him with a 4 because our other 5 is not available. Really, our chance, our only chance was to have at very least solid guard play from the 1 and 2 and that didn't happen. This was just a really bad matchup for us and the last time we play duke in the regular season may not be any better. I am not putting blame on Hubert for that, he is just having to play the cards he was dealt.

As I feared, Griffin was the difference maker for this game...

And in the private conversation we had I feared that Ayers/Luckie/Valentine would destroy us tonight to make up for the Louisville backlash. (They were not even needed)

Average shooting teams seem to have great shooting nights against us, even when we play half way decent defense. And make no mistake about it dook is an average shooting team.

Having one big body in the paint and having an off shooting night is the end result of a 24-40 rebound disadvantage.
Anyone miss RW's system yet?🙋‍♂️

HD will grow and learn at some point but he has no one to blame but himself for the fatigue this team is going through right now. There really is no reason that Styles/Dunn shouldn't be ready at this point for 3 min per half to keep the starters fresh. At least no reason I can see from the outside looking in.

not good that we took yet another ass whipping to add to the ass whippings against every other good team we’ve played this year. thank god for a weak acc to make some of you feel better about what this really is right now with hubert and this team

But how about R J falling down on fast breaks….or how about that ill- advised shot at half that should have went to Manek….that was the killer right there.

D South…why is RJ falling down on fast breaks?

Maybe try running actual sets to get the shot you want instead of chucking 3’s early in the shot clock? Maybe give your best shooter (Walton) more minutes when your team is cold? Maybe double Griffin or trap to force him to get the ball out of his hands and force someone else to beat him instead of letting him abuse Manek all night?

Hubert’s entire “gameplan” or “system” is to hope we have a hot shooting night and thats it. If we dont shoot well we get blown out by good teams and have dog fights against bad teams. Thats not sustainable. Its like a boxer that just goes into a fight and just hopes that he can swing for the fences and eventually get a knockout

Roy was successful because 9 times out of 10 he had the more talented team and preached execution. Hubert doesnt have that luxury, so he needs to gameplan and make adjustments that mask our flaws and exploit the other team’s weaknesses. Hes a first year coach but so far hes shown zero ability to do either of those things. Duke’s talent level is not 20 points better than UNC’s but Coach K knew our weaknesses were our guards not being able to create and Manek being a liability on defense. Low and behold they pressured our guards and ran their offense to put Manek into isolations on defense. It was like a chess master playing chess against a novice. People complain about the NBA and the “iso ball” but dont understand the teams that are great like the Suns and Warriors are the ones that pick and roll all game and get their playmakers and scorers into mismatches and either its a dump off to a big for a dunk or if the defense collapses its a kick out to an open shooter

Our point guard play is awful when teams can apply aggressive bird dogging on ball pressure with a single defender. Each time it has been applied we cannot get any rhythm because both of our ballhandlers are steered wherever the defender points him, got over picks with them, pushed them out, etc.. RJ & Caleb, both. That is a disaster for any offense.

Defensively we were in a "pick your poison" scenario with these matchups. Manek is a massive mismatch wherever he is deployed against their roster. Hubert tried to get creative and hide Brady on Williams. Problem is Mando is a good paint defender who cannot guard away from the paint, Brady is neither. Mando picked up fouls, and Williams would own the glass, and no rim protection on drives either even if he hadn't picked up the 2 fouls and Manek stayed on Williams. While they will still have Mando in a mismatch on the perimeter.

Leaky on Banchero is so much better then Brady, but Brady has zero chance to guard Griffin, who came in shooting 50% from 3 as a volume shooter with over 70 attempts. Pick your poison. They were going to find Brady and the mismatch was going to be stark, and it was, Griffin feasted. Leaky can only guard one of them. Putting Manek on Williams only gives them two or three stark advantages as opposed to the one.

They were going to score. Brady played his ass off, but without RJ & Caleb scoring we could not keep up with that pace, not even close. I felt bad for Brady, they ripped off 14 straight on him to start the second half. Griffin 10, then switched him to Williams who promptly had an easy dunk, then Roach gets his 1st bucket with an easy floater when Brady switched. Brady gave as much back as he could on offense, but with no guard help it was a heavily unbalanced tradeoff.

It's ok to say fook dook Gary!

I don't think anyone realistically expected us to win this game. We haven't beaten a single tournament team yet and got absolutely obliterated in basically all of them.

We rely on great shooting nights to win and can't win without them for the most part. We had a chance if we shot unconscious from 3. Tonight we did not though.

We could have had Dean and Roy sitting on the bench and the outcome might have been closer, but we would have lost. I don't study basketball as much as some of you, but just looking at the match ups coming in, it was clear we were going to have a perfect game and Duke be off for us to keep it close. They have better athletes at virtually every position. As for this team having no fight, what about coming back from 33-8 to get it to a workable margin at half? Then duke comes out and scores 10 straight--actually Griffin-- and we were down and out for the count. And when you play good defense and the other team still scores, it takes the wind out of you.

Dude Duke just got more talent….tall, quick, handles and can shoot…..Manek and Mondo got abused….RJ just too small. Mondo throwing up air balls under the damn basket because his shot was contested. With Love and RJ not hitting threes…we didn’t have a chance

Roy's System all but guarantees poor guard play unless the recruiting is nearly flawless, both in terms of having a very fast/quick PG and a Wing or able able to drain 3s consistently, as well as in having at least one 4/5 beast on offense. If those factors are not present, the Roy System which is 100% focused on running down the court the fastest to get6 off the most shots, means you will have poor guard play much of the time. Why? Because if your recruiting focus is on PGs and Wiongs best able to get down court very fast, then your focus on the perimeter is NOT on 3 point shooting nor on perimeter D nor on smartly played half court offense.

Davis was on Roy's bench for 9 years as the HC-in-waiting (just not officially so named). Davis is the second most responsible for the way the team expects to play now based on how they were recruited and initially coached. Davis should have known that the guards he helped make certain he would inherit are a bunch to top athletes who lack a whole lot of things that make for top team-focused, college basketball guards.

Hello everyone.

How bad would that skull dragging have been if not for Manek's offense and Leaky's defense?

In 5 of the 7 games that we have lost, we have lost by an average of 18 points. What has been the common denominator in those 5 losses? Gary and Dtodd4475 both touched on it......, guard play. In today's game, as it has been for well over a decade, a team will go as far as the guard play takes them. When we look closely at those 5 losses mentioned, our guard(s) performed miserably in each contest. Overall, we are 0-7 in Q1 games. Not good for an NCAA resume, so you might start thinking about that as well. Will we make the tournament? If we can reach 20 W's, I think so, but will be a 10-12 seed.

There is a reality for all of us that needs to be settled in about this year's team, and that reality is that our guard play for the most part is well below the standard needed to compete with teams like dook and the other 4, who are head and shoulders above us in talent at the guard spot, and couple that fact together with being decidedly outmanned in talent overall and a very short bench, well....., what you see is what you get. If you disagree with these statements, just review the tapes on UT-UK-UM-WF & dook if you can stomach it and get back to me.

Also, if you are thinking that Garcia and Ant being available would have made the difference well...., maybe on the scoreboard, but not the final result.

And another thought for all......, if you think that our coaching is substandard and is a determining factor in our losing to these types of teams, then you need to think about that again. I think we all questioned why Armando was guarding Banchero to start this game, after seeing him go scoreless the rest of the 1st half with Leaky on him. It was the only option available at the time as Leaky was guarding the Steward kid.

We all saw what happened after the switch......, Leaky shuts down Banchero, and the Steward kid now being guarded by Love has his best game of the season with 27 points. Steward is a very good player and is lengthy and very quick and Love or any other player could not stay in front of him. Dook has more weapons than we have defenders that can check them and that reverts back to talent, which, as I mentioned, we lack.

I again want you to remember the last several years under a HOF coach. Were the issues with those teams coaching issues? No, it wasn't coaching, injuries along with not having the talent or the correct mix of talent resulted in those very lean years. We HAVE to infuse this program with TALENTED players at the key positions and those happen to be where the issues reside. Talented-athletic guards are essential in today's college basketball along with sharpshooting wings. You can get along without the dominating post player as long as you have a post player(s) who are serviceable. Although, a dominating post man is always a BIG plus.

Do not think that the Coaching Staff doesn't realize we are talent deficient. Hubert is working on the talent issues and look for a lot of action within the portal to find the missing links post season to add to the new ones for next year. If the 2 visitors we had last night (G.G. Jackson & Stevenson) did not see where they can help UNC after this debacle, then we will lose them both. Trimble and Nickel were there as well, but they have signed already and are in the program, although they might be having second thoughts after witnessing that display......, jk!

As far as the game went, I don't need to point out the good or the bad for any of you who watched it. I have come to one conclusion though, and that is Armando needs some glasses I believe. Many of his shots that he put up were horribly off line and off balance. Like the rest of the guy's sans Manek, they score well when the talent level is even or worse, but against superior talent, they cannot throw it in the ocean from the proverbial boat. Our guards cannot create their own shots when playing against the quick, bigger and more talented defenders.

One thing that is in our favor this year is that the League is way down talent wise and we are benefiting with wins over the teams that are even less talented than we are. The only game that maybe we should have won was the ND game, as I feel we are a tad more talented.

If you still think that coaching is an issue, that's your right to think it. This is Hubert's 1st year and overall, he is getting it done. I, for one, could do without his hyperbole and irritating and endless cheerleading for the players, but that's Hubert's personality, as he is optimistic to a fault some believe. Don't let that fool you at all, as he and this staff are very much aware of where the issues are and have to have the time and the players to fix it, and with the right recruiting acumen, he will get the players.

The problem as I see it with most Carolina diehards, is that they believe we are so much more talented and should be competing with the upper crusts in the league play. Well..., prepare yourself for more disappointments as we are going to get run out of several more gyms in the near future due to the issues at hand. The start to recovery begins with this year's recruiting class. Personally, I will hope for wins in every game left, but I also know what reality dictates to me.

I will end my diatribe by saying that, while I have never denigrated any one player in our program and will take umbrage when others do as it always creates caustic comments, and many times is unfair to the player(s). With these thoughts in mind, let me just say that our program will look entirely different next year, and it will be a good thing. A cleaner house is needed and the occupants will be of better quality.

The only problem with our guards last night was they couldn’t hit wide open shots and RJ kept falling down on fast breaks….he figured if he couldn’t get past Duke defenders by air…..he would just slide under them.

I think you meant Manek got torched by Duke. At one point, they. Scored 14 straight on Manek.
Manek has been a liability on defense all year. And Duke took it right to him.

How close would it had been if Manek could play just decent defense? Duke scored like 50 points on him.

Manek is not a defensive stalwart at all, we all know this. Better question...., where are we without him? As for defense, go look at the stats, and focus in on the scoring of dook's guards, that's where the house crumbled. Manek certainly is not quick enough to guard them, and evidently our guards are not either.

I continue to not understand why Hubert starts and plays the same guys 30+ minutes a game when those guys are either not playing hard, not defending at all, or just simply having a bad night. Last night the same 5 guys started and all played 30 minutes or more. Again. The reserve minutes: Walton, 14, Puff, 8, McCoy, 7, Styles, 3, and Dunn, 2. Dunn and Styles, 2 and 3 minutes. It's truly unexplainable.

I was at the game….I felt bad for Manek…..bad for Mondo who shot air balls from 3 feet.
It was a bad loss…however we missed so many wide open looks. It’s not like we were jacking up bad shots….we couldn’t make shit early on and Duke made everything.

Mondo must learn to pass the damn ball back out when he got bad angles. He just forces up weird off balance prayers no matter what,….he’s been doing it all year…yesterday it got exposed in the biggest game of the year.

If you were there, then you had to see the differential in the quickness, speed and size that were on display by dook, that's what we could not overcome. The team came out nervous and unsure and it showed, and then panic set in as was mentioned by several players in the post-game interviews. Bad formula to play a game under, wouldn't you think?

I think you meant Manek got torched by Duke. At one point, they. Scored 14 straight on Manek.
Manek has been a liability on defense all year. And Duke took it right to him.
The problem is Manek was the only player that could shot… You still always deflect any Blame away from Love and start blaming Rj… they both have been bad.. love is 6-28 the last 2 games with head some scratching turnovers. Not trying to single him out as he has been facilitating better and I was encouraged after he went to bench against Louisville and came back in focused and hit a couple shots

This was pretty much a team meltdown so singling out only 1 or two players is not accurate. Other than Leaky, who had a good game? Manek had a good offensive game but we all know his liabilities on defense. Bacot, Love, Davis--all were outmatched.

No argument on Manek scoring but I was at the game and just wanted to give him a hug….teams are going straight at him. Yes Love shot has been off the last five games…at least his two point shots but we win four of them. He distributed the ball very well yesterday…. But we missed wide open shots. In fact Lovr is our assist leader on the year…so he is passing the ball.

Now RJ kisses me off taking the last shot of the half. That was Manek’s shot to take…if he hits it we are down only eight at half.

Saw that too…..really I knew we were outmatched but damn I thought we would do better. Duke do have horses at every position.
And they were shooting lights out….and they play hard nose defense….rat face got him a great team.

We need addition by subtraction in the off-season. At least 1 or 2 talented and experienced guards are needed from the transfer portal. And by that, I mean a true lead guard and not another combo guard.

We also need a capable wing scorer. I appreciate what Leaky does on the defensive end but we really miss that Barnes/Bullock type wing that can provide scoring.

Well the line was Duke by 3 so not everyone was expecting a 20 point nipple ripping. Acting like Duke just has better players right now and they remember last year is just trying to cover up the disaster that is the Heels head coach.

Those days are probably gone of the pass first lead guard…like a Jimmy Black. It could work if the other four starters are cold blooded scorers. We do need a wing scorer and a center that can play away from the basket. It’s a new game and Duke got the talent for this new game.

I disagree. Look at how Savhir Wheeler has completely changed the UK team. He is a pure lead guard that makes others better and with him uk is a title contender. Last year uk missed the ncaa tournament. Cal went and grabbed an experienced lead guard and a rebounding machine center and that flipped their roster in a positive direction. That is the type of transfer infusion Carolina needs.

If you believe that coaching lost this game, then hold onto it. If, after seeing the large gap in talent that was glaringly apparent, I disagree that coaching is the issue before this program. We are deficient in talent and being down players and a short bench caused this skull dragging .

Don’t forget that sorry looking group of assistants…..the guts on those fellas are disappointing. They are obviously not watching film….they are eating

Can’t get the correct sense of your post, as I am not sure whether its a serious statement or just sarcasm. Which?

Duke has 8-10 points better talent.. not 30 points better talent. I was expected a Duke lead ranging from 7-10 most of the second half, maybe they hit late free throws to win by 10-12.

I’m serious about the assistants…..don’t know their coaching talent but their guts are disturbing…..they look tired, fat and bored on the bench.

Post game comments were also telling by several players. They were hit in the mouth straight out and some players panicked. Think about this: We we’re outscored 43-5 in the 1st 10 minutes of the game and the 1st 4 minutes of 2nd half. Was that due to coaching or was it due to poor performance by our players? Those 2 sequences of the game made the game impossible to recover from and win given the poor offensive performance sans Manek. Coaching could not in anyway have made up for this. No one short of God’s son could have coached this team to a win. Oh, and by the way, we lost by 20 not 30.

Hello to all:
Tough night last night. I liked this post, but disagree a little with the coaching aspect. The decision to put Bacot on Banchero is a coaching decision that hurt us. And I don’t think that Love and Davis should be allowed to stay on the floor playing that poorly. Them getting taken out is a coachable moment. This team has nothing to lose and everything to gain by getting some guys that have been sitting, quality minutes. I also think some trapping and full court pressure would have slowed Duke down a little. When a team is hot like they were timeouts, mixing defenses, and more bodies would have been appropriate. I hesitate to criticize coaching because I know how difficult it is. I support Coach Davis and respect the posters on this board for being so knowledgeable. I think The coaches are doing some great things, but I have been wanting to see these improvements, and it hasn’t happened. Just my opinion.

Remind me, I must have forgotten, just who do you see taking over the guard duties if you sit them? Let me answer for you. Dunn, who might survive a game such as this one was, but could have his confidence eroded or completely destroyed against superior experienced talent. We are talent deficient and cannot compete with our counterparts that are faster, stronger, and in some or even most cases, decidedly more talented.

Not saying coaching cost the game but it contributed a lot. Think it was coincidence that dook after seeing Leaky stifle Banchero comes out in second half with focus on getting Griffin the ball? First 5 minutes of second half ended the game. Maybe come out starting the zone in second half - Hubert had to realize k was going to adjust to the first half defense changes.

Guard play lost this game. RJ did the exact same play to end the first half he did against state, dribble around and throw up a jumper. Against state it went in but I was still upset about it (mainly because that was coming out of a timeout). As others have said, this team is just not constructed well. An experienced hc can mask that to an extent but not a novice. RJ and Caleb were 7/21 with I think 6 assists and 5 to's.

Was I naïve enough to think UNC could steal this game - yes, given how they had been shooting the deep ball lately, especially at home. Bacot's early 2nd foul was just the most recent punch in the mouth that rocks this team's confidence. When something throws a wrench in the gameplan this team plays as if they do not have the confidence in the staff to make in-game adjustments, and that is a reflection of the staff. UNC is not 20 points worse (on paper) than any college team, but they have been butt-whipped by every big boy program they have faced.
