Since 1979 he has called every duke-Carolina game that ESPN has aired. Gotta admit when your team is winning or wins the game you absolutely love the guy. On the other hand when your team is on the losing end, you really don't like him much.

I have to disagree with this .. I have never been able to stomach Vitale regardless of who was winning. I just don't like his style, period.

It's about time the dude retired anyway. Not trying to be mean, but his voice sounds like it's been shot for the last few years. Maybe he would be better served to provide pre-game / halftime analysis? Uh maybe not, he doesn't offer much real analysis these days anyway.

I have loved him. Enthusiasm really matters, and although sometimes i think Dickie V. hams it up a little, there is no doubt that he truly loves the sport and the people of the sport, and is an advocate for the purity of sport to ennoble and uplift and to bring the very best out of folks. I wish they would let him do this one and the next just to hear him talk about Coach Smith... since Dickie V' tenure overlapped so much with Dean's. On the other hand, i have zero complaints about Jay Bilas doing the game if Dick is not going to..... Jay is excellent and is as informed about the rivalry as anyone could be since he comes from inside it. GO HEELS!!!!!!!

his game has been slipping a bit since he had his throat surgery. But I don't think you can say the sun set on him 10 years ago. Either way its the end of an era. But I do like who is replacing him. Looking forward to Wednesday.

Hearing him tonight he almost sounds sad and disinterested. I think hes retiring at the end of the season. I for one will be sad to see him go. He loves the sport and he loved coach smith.

I don't really like the move tbh. I think he has done enough to be able to kind of pick and choose. He has been a part of this rivalry for as long as I can remember.

Constantly being unfavorably imbalanced toward any one team is never a good thing in broadcasting. That is only okay if one is doing games for the Duke (or UNC, Wake etc.) sports network. Additionally, never properly analyzing a basketball game that gets past the diaper dandy type of phrases leads to boring and uneventful commentary. Vitale has lived a charmed life in broadcasting for the most part of the past five decades. We should all be so lucky where the sport of college basketball is concerned. Furthermore, his Duke based bias comments (imo) have left many tired of hearing his voice during games. I do not feel sorry for him in any way. He has lived the good life for a long, long time in my view...
