Watch Garrison Brooks's announcement - live

I was watching a woman I thought was his mother. it was not.

Yeah apparently it was his godmother.

Another thing that's sad too, he has nothing on his twitter about today either. Usually it's the happiest day of a kid's life and he runs on social media to celebrate it. None of that going on for him. He was forced into this decision.

Looks like the kid was just upset that his mom couldn't be there... I could be wrong. Then again, I'm not sure I could miss my son's college announcement.. Could be something to it...

Well he should be in school, so I dont expect anything on twitter until later today

I am happy for the young man that he had done well over the summer and had some fine choices in front of him. I feel badly for him that family stuff sucked all the joy out of what should have been a great day for him.

And old counselor I knew once said "Family shit stinks the strongest and sticks the longest". Think we are seeing some of that at work today.

If he didn't want to go to MSU (as it seems to be implied), then why go there? Is his father holding a gun to his head or something?

I get that UNC was his 1st choice, but if MSU is as depressing as it sounds for him, why not go to Auburn or Georgia?

The kid is caught in the middle of a family struggle. Not sure what is so hard to understand. I hope it works out for him.

Well Brooks certainly shocked us today. I guess we can hold out slim hope that PJ does the same in the opposite direction tomorrow.

I'm aware of the family drama, but that didn't answer my question.

If Dad wanted MSU, Mom wanted anywhere but, and He wanted UNC (and apparently NOT MSU), it's odd that dad wins out. That's all I'm saying.

His mom was the one who was "NOT MSU" C'mon man Reading ain't that hard. Kid is caught between an estranged mom and dad... and dad happens to be a coach at MSU.

Looked to me about the only person happy at the table was Dad(assuming dad was the person on his far left).

I didn't think the dad was even there. Maybe so though.
Final FYI on Brooks y'all:

I got info this evening from someone who lives in Auburn and knows the family well that confirmed everything I posted earlier and added a couple of things:
Garrison's mom wanted him to either stay home and go to Auburn or go somewhere other than MSU, and when they made the trip to Chapel Hill last weekend Garrison "loved every minute of it" and his mom was happy with that and was thus sold as well, and did in fact tell the staff and close friends/family that UNC was the final destination. Something indeed happened in the last 48 hours (emotional pressure from his dad I presume) to sway him to pick MSU. Literally no one in the local family was happy including his grandma. And yes, his mom was "too mad" to go to the ceremony.

Really hate it for the kid to be torn like that. I would've loved to get him but hope everything works out for him.

This cracked me up because he literally said exactly what you tried to correct him on.

It is really sad that his mom & dad put him in this situation on what should have been a great day for their son they transformed it in to an emotion train wreck.

Clarence Darrow once said "The first half of our lives is ruined by our parents, the second half is ruined by our children." Nowadays, with greater longevity you could divide it into thirds with the third part once again ruined by our parents.

2 people in this thread claimed he didnt want MSU. So you'll have to forgive me for not jumping to this conclusion automatically.

Perhaps instead of questioning my reading skills you attempt to actually be a bit less impertinent?

Sorry, but I don't think I could have laid it out any clearer.

I'll add one other thing I picked up from the Auburn end:
They were even conceding him to UNC, because of his aforementioned affinity and momma being sufficiently impressed during the visit.

My guess is that dad must've gotten on the phone with him and swayed him at the end..
Kid was tore up about it, as you can see, and no one looked very happy about what should be a joyous day for him.

I'm going to go back to something @DSouthr said about the family and Roy. I agree 100% that it was an issue, and in fact I'll go out on a limb and say that was a big reason UNC cancelled his original trip to Chapel Hill. I believe the "transcript" issue was at best a convenient excuse. Roy was not likely to risk having him verbally commit back then and scare away other Bigs, only to have this pressure change his mind --- especially not when a gem like Manley had fallen into his lap.

As I posted above, once Manley was in the fold, then Brooks became a luxury --- we still had the room for another good Big no matter what goes down with the Hybrids.

Hey, I'm good with this one, would have been good with it either way! I got my HUGE win the night before, I am in perma smile mode right now. I get to see my Heels play for the first time this season tomorrow night for a full game and not just some random clips and that ain't likely to have my smile turn. Tonight we get to FINALLY be done with the PJ speculation and honestly, I am tired of arguing about where PJ is going to play. Cards are all on the table and this has been a week for upsets, night before last HUGE upset, Brooks not coming to us upset, could PJ be a trio of upsets? Who knows, well we all will a few hours from now!

I hope he has an excellent career. The good thing for him is Izzo is a good person and a great coach. I hate he didn't come to UNC, but he did go to a respectable program and should do fine.

This Tar Heel is moving on!

He's going to Mississippi St (MSU) not Michigan St (MSU).

MY bad. Strike the part about Izzo then, lol. It ain't UNC so who really cares!

I still wish him luck and he really will need it!

Smells like Big Ben is making it rain..$$$
You really think they paid for a guy not in the top 100?

Romar on ESPNU basically admitting that Porter's father was hired as a package deal with his son.
It's not illegal. Romar is also the kid's God Father so it he made them a deal they couldn't refuse.

How the F*$#&$ is this allowed by the NCAA?
How exactly would you stop this. Are you going to deny a man a job because his son goes there? UNC can do it also. Roy just doesn't choose to pick his staff that way.

The hypocrisy of the NCAA is limitless!
This is pretty low on my list of gripes with the NCAA
