What type of season do you think Luke Maye will have ?

Probably something like this...

Okay fine. 25 minutes per game, 11 points, 7.5 rebounds, shooting line of .510/.405/710.

Weird factoid: did anyone know Maye is only 28 for 52 on FT's for his career? Odd.

Definitely will be highlight of his career. But if the Heels are needing a double double from him night in and night out, going to be a long year.

LM rebounds well for his size/athleticism. He focuses on anticipation, positioning, and hustle. He is calm and confident on O as well. He could develop into a regular double/double guy and this would elevate the entire team.

Based on his per 40 minutes numbers from last season, if he plays 30 mpg, we'll see this:

11.8 points
8.4 rebounds

Can he play that many minutes?

Can he perform at that level with the opponent's best front line defender targeting him?

Can he improve over his last season play?

Luke has earned our respect. We'll get the answers to those other questions soon enough. But my guess is that he won't find it easy to improve over his performance last season.

Kennedy, Isaiah, Tony and Luke averaged a combined 76.3* minutes per game last season.

They scored a combined 36.9 points.

The combined to pull down 24.0 rebounds.

If Luke can mange 30 minutes, 12 points and 9 rebounds, that still leaves a deficit of 46 minutes, 25 points and 15 rebounds.

Can Luke give us 30 mpg? Maybe, but most of our bigs don't. You have to go back to 2014 and McAdoo to find a big playing that many minutes. My stats page doesn't go back that far, but the next guy is probably Hansbrough.

MAYBE our 3 freshman bigs can give us those minutes. 20 + 15 + 10 = 45. That's pretty close. But you also have to go back a way to find a freshman big who has played 20 minutes for us. Tony didn't even play 15. Now of course part of that is we haven't needed freshmen to play 20 minutes too often, because we almost always have experienced players ahead of them. We don't have that now. The last time we needed a freshman big to step up was when Brice was a freshman and - for as great as he turned out - he wasn't able to deliver. Which is to say that we may not be able to count on those minutes no matter how much we or they want them to deliver.

*that's slightly inflated because only Kennedy played all 40 games; but close enough for this discussion.

12 and 7, and we're going to need the all of it. Cam and and Pinson need to give us the same with Berry giving us at least a ACC POY performance nightly.

I said early on with Luke that once he found his confidence he would surprise some people. I hope and believe Luke found that confidence in the latter part of last season, especially in the NCAA Tourney. He sure as heck surprised Butler and Kensucky!

I also hope and believe that Luke's per minute scoring may well increase this season with more PT and more expected of him. I expect his rebound numbers to be similar or better.

The kid has some ice water in his veins. I believe he can and will continue to improve and be an important part of this years squad. 12 & 7, with the ability to continually draw bigs away from the rim.

Does the kid have a girlfriend? Cause if he doesn't he would have been having one hellova season since early April!
