With the amount of $ and resources UNC has for the bball program it makes academic issues 100% on the student athlete for being nothing but irresponsible and lazy .. almost mimics the team at times .. jmo
Academics and covid doesn't seem like something that needs to be kept private. Seems like Hubert just caused himself some grief for no good reason.
Also grades for fall semester have been out for a while. Students would have known their grades by December 12th I believe. So if Ant's grades were going to make him ineligible for spring semester, Hubert and the staff would have known for a full month. That means Hubert continued to play him for the following games knowing he would be ineligible as soon as the semester started:
Furman
Kentucky
App State
Boston College
Notre Dame
Virginia
So is this where we are as a program? The staff isn't keeping tabs on players' grades during the season to ensure they stay eligible, and if they aren't doing their classwork we're still going to play them right up until the moment they are officially ineligible?
I remember Dean and Gut sending staff around to check on players to see if they were in class. Players ran suicides until they puked if they got caught ditching. No one ever was ruled ineligible mid-season bc the staff was always checking grades during the semester.
Just another crack in the program. How many times in the past has a UNC bball scholarship athlete been ruled ineligible for academics ? At one time I thought they had compliance staff just for that ..
Because this would be the first time in my lifetime a UNC basketball player was ruled academically ineligible by the NCAA for spring semester.
If the staff was watching player grades (like all previous UNC staffs) the moment they saw Ant's grades heading downhill, they would have gotten it corrected. More time with academic support staff, talking to professors about extra credit, holding him out of fall semester games until he has proven he has his grades improved.
Strictly speaking, it takes more than just a player to screw this up. At the bare minimum the coaches have a responsibility to talk with academic support staff regularly to ensure no players are approaching ineligibility. It takes active negligence by the coaching staff to let this happen.
Do we know for SURE that it is an academic issue for Ant? If not, it could be that he broke some team rule and has to suffer the consequences, right? If that is true, then I think Hubert has the right to keep it internal.
As for Sean, if it is a covid protocol issue, then I don't see why Hubert wouldn't just say that and move on.

Don't know about UNC, but my daughter was still taking finals up till Dec 14th at Ball State, and grades did not come out until around New Years. Unless you Absolutely know Hubert played a player knowing he would be ineligible in the 2nd semester.........I suggest you shut your pie hole.

Have you seen anything thus far to suggest the team respects HD? Nice guy coaches get taken advantage of if they don’t command respect and become the pack leader. I’ve yet to see HD even raise his voice at those players straight dogging it on the court and he surely hasn’t benched anyone. Looks to me like he’s getting walked all over.

Finals ended Dec 10th, commencement was Dec 12th. There isn't a sports team on campus that had to wait much beyond that to find out their players' grades.
Was reported by someone close to the team and appears to have even confirmed by the other site. The fact that he stopped playing or appearing with the team as soon as the new semester started lines up with the report.
The May thing seems the weirdest to me. We already announced it publicly when we had players in the protocol. Why keep it secret for a coach?
Maybe we find out the details at some point, and it will make sense then, but it's definitely odd.

Everything I posted was extrapolated from the available data. For the first time in my life a UNC basketball player is academically ineligible after fall semester. We know whose job it is to monitor players' academics and make sure this doesn't happen. We know when fall semester ended and approximately when sports staffs would have gotten their players grades. We know that any player who failed fall semester would become ineligible on the first day of Spring semester. We know Ant Harris played every game from the end of Fall Semester up until the start of Spring semester, and has been unavailable since Spring semester started.

Hubert did this to himself (if true). There's NO WAY Roy or DES would do this. As soon as those grades came out showing a player was ineligible, that would have been it.

The goals at Carolina have always been more than that, per Dean Smith.
Dean's staff would have had him splitting his time with tutors and running suicides in practice if his grades were bad. And that would have happened in the middle of the semester so he could get those grades raised. Dean was a teacher on and off the court.
Wasn't his last game against Virginia? That was January 8th. And UNC's spring semester began on January 10th. I think it's plausible he could've been eligible right until the spring semester started.
I don't think Hubert is incompetent enough that he'd play an ineligible player.

The point was that Hubert would have known he flunked classes and would become ineligible January 10th for pretty much a full month. He kept playing Ant over other guys who did their classwork and weren't going to become ineligible during that month. You don't reward the guy who let down his team.
Based on timing, it’s most likely not grades from last year. So either it’s an honor court situation that just arose or Hubert has some added level of academic baseline that goes beyond the NCAA standard.
I actually think the level of joy you seem to be taking any time this team or its coaches have a problem you can hammer is telling... You have jumped on this like a Christmas present that you forgot to open, NC St fans could take lessons from you.
