Which one of you...( Morphed my thread into a cartoon debate?)

Can we just agree to disagree on this? It's becoming evidently clear that we just have differing tastes on humor.

And...Spongebob? (sighs...). I give up.

The subject was cartoon characters, not cartoons in general. Stop moving the goal posts and just accept the fact you are wrong.

I was trying to call a truce, but F it...I see how it is.

Spongebob, since this is the easiest... I'll just leave this one here...NTTAWWT.

Simpsons are a poor man's South Park. Accept it and move on. Cartman > Bart. Randy Marsh > Homer Simpson. This is just fact. How they made years worth of revenue with "Hmmm, Beer!"..."Doh!"...and fixations on sprinkled donuts if still beyond me. We are a simpleton mass. Take the L, sir.

Bugs Bunny -- I'll give you this one, that show was iconic. No arguments.

Never cared for South Park (maybe it was the voices that annoyed me; IDK) but Archer is fantastic!

I loathe South Park and it's largely because I can't even understand what they're saying because of those stupid voices. Plus, I find shows like that lazy in their humor. I find a lot of today's "comedy" lazy. When I was younger, humor was more subtle and it was largely based off of dialogue. Now, everything is about shock value - "how outrageous can we be?" Just look at the differences between the John Hughes movies of the 80s and the Judd Apatow movies of the past 10-15 years. Don't get me wrong, I like most of Judd Apatow's movies but I don't hold them in as high of regard as I do older comedies. It just seems like today's humor (Apatow movies, The Hangover trilogy, etc.) always take the easiest route to getting a laugh over a more thought-provoking route.

Oh, I've never seen the show Archer. Like @Blue2010, I have limited time to direct towards TV. So I usually just go with sports and movies. I don't have it in me to direct effort towards following a program.

South Park has gone so serious and serial.

So first South Park was accused of being too "toilety" and then a few poasts later it's accused of being too serious and serial... which is it?

Personally, I somewhat enjoyed the earlier seasons of South Park which were more crude and bathroom humor-laden - but I wouldn't have listed it as a top cartoon out there. Since they've gone to more in-depth jokes, and more current events centered, I think the show has vaulted itself to the top of that list.

I've seen several episodes of Archer, a couple of my friends are obsessed with it, so I catch some occasionally when hanging out with them. Some of them make me laugh. I don't think even my friends that watch it religiously would take it over South Park though.

Honestly, it's both. I agree with your assessment of the show's arc:

Beginning -- basically all toilet humor. I actually dislike these episodes a lot. The first ~4-5 seasons of SP are unwatchable for me.
Middle -- show hits its stride and takes on deeper / more subtle comedy in addition to gag comedy and toilet humor. Seasons like 9-17 of SP are hilarious and by far their best work. Brilliant comedy.
Current -- serious and serial. By "serial" I mean now they make their episodes build and there's a legit story arc. South Park had never done that before until these past two seasons. It's gotten bland for me. Just go back to where each episode is its own thing and isn't linked to the episode before.

Did you actually read the article? That was just retards being retards. Had nothing to do with the show.

I skimmed it looking for key bullet points, which were covered in the upper half of the article. I've gotten accustomed to multitasking with work and this site, but this thread is testing my limits a bit. I don't have the time to dig for an article that perfectly fits what I was looking for, but the overwhelming belief that I used to hear (granted, this was years ago) was that Spongebob was along the same lines of critique as the Teletubbies. Again, NTTAWWT...except that it's a kids program, which does actually present a problem, for me anyway.

This show was awesome and is a good example of how kids are dumber now + how everything is PC now. There's no way Pinky and the Brain would fly today.

For one, it's too complex of a show -- kids now would be like WTF. And even beyond that, it's way too "dark" for PC-conscious networks to show now.

For this reason I want to make sure that I have access to shows like these when I have kids that are of age to watch/understand/enjoy them. I hope we'll still be able to get them on Netflix or something, I'm sure there will be a way.

It'll be nice to have shows like this so that my future kids can grow up with a balance to the PC bs that will be shoved down their throats in every other aspect of their lives once they hit the public school system up here.

Except nothing in the show even hints at Spongebob being gay. It's just stupid hate-mongering from religious fanatics.

I feel qualified to make that statement because I've seen probably 90% of all Spongebob episodes ever made lol

Definitely agree with this, and that's why I prefer the older ones. The newer ones are still good, but it doesn't hold a candle to the older South Park. Plus, I like to go to Hulu and just watch a random South Park episode, and it's harder to do that when they all build off of each other.

Agree on this part. Even the SP writers admitted that they completely bombed on the last season with Garrison as Trump. That was their worst season to date, by a mile. I'm hoping they learned their lesson.

Fair enough - I'll differ to your knowledge here then. I have seen snippets of it when my younger brothers (youngest is 16 years younger than me) would watch it, and I remember thinking it was some of the most flamboyant and stupid-sounding stuff I've ever heard. But I digress...I'll stand down. This is going nowhere.

I can agree with this. The last couple seasons have been funny to me, but I don't think they do a great job completing/resolving the longer storylines. So while each episode is still really funny - I feel like they could almost be watched in any order due to the continuity not being great.

I'm not really sure who's foxhole I'm jumping into for this argument, because I've seen people make great points such as South Park being superior to the Simpsons (albeit slightly) and Archer (much more so) - but then follow it up with outlandish statements like SpongeBob sucks. I might be flying in off the top rope on my own team here.

LOL. This is such a fail post. It once again goes to show you have no understanding of cartoon characters and cartoons in general. Either that or you don't understand the complexities of humor in cartoons.

No worries, since this last part clearly is directed towards me. I was admittedly ill-prepared for the backlash here. Full disclosure, I haven't the slightest remaining memory of any of the content of most of the shows here, outside SP. I remember what my impressions of those shows were, but that's about it. I overwhelmingly watch sports and movies (which I have to be selective about) b/c of family obligations. I came here trying to make a simple point and move on, and (ahem) some folks just won't let things slide.

So...

Spongebob is life lol. And I wouldn't unequivocally say Archer is funnier than South Park. When SP is at its best, it's on its own stratosphere of awesomeness.

But when SP "whiffs" on an episode, it's near unwatchable (IMO) because it's either too gross or too weird. On the other hand, Archer is more consistent with its level of comedy, IMO. So yeah.

To weigh in on a couple of other points in this thread:

1 - Ren and Stimpy was awesome. But I was also 20 years younger then. Not sure if I would find it as funny today.

2 - I can't stand Spongebob. I forbid my kids from watching it. Just inane garbage.

3 - I'm with whoever mentioned the classics - Bugs, Tom & Jerry, etc. But I'll take it back even farther. Who remembers Heckle and Jeckle, Mighty Mouse, Fat Albert and The Superfriends?

Seriously dude. You should stop. If the only thing you get from the Simpsons is beer and doughnuts then you don't understand the show. I can understand why some people don't see past that though. A lot of their humor requires you to know about history and current events. A lot of millennials don't know that kind of stuff.

I "get" the material in the Simpsons. I just don't find it laugh-out-loud funny. It's just okay for me, dawg.

But perhaps this is why Blue doesn't like Archer either. It has a lot of subtle comedy that requires an understanding of language, history, and syntax.

Those are some really good ones. I would also add Rocko to that list. There are some other good ones that I watched (Darkwing Duck, Talespin, Goof Troop), but I wouldn't put them on a best of list.
Forgot about Rocko's Modern Life!! That was a good one. Another cartoon that would not fly today.

That's fine, I can understand that. I feel the same way about South Park, however I do recognize its historical impact and recognize it as one of the better cartoons on TV.

Oh I understand it just fine. It's just not funny. At all.

Based off the 10 minutes you watched, right? ;)
GFY. I watched it religiously as a kid. Again, then I grew up. I just find SP to be a more clever depiction. I think we're looking at the same angle here...our taste in style just varies.

I thought you were referring to the latter part of my poast you quoted -- about Archer. My mistake Famdo Calrissian.
