They canned Sendek who was pretty good but not good enough.

They stuck with Lowe for pretty long. He could recruit, but couldn't win.

Gott started well (with Lowe's recruits) but has had trouble keeping the larder full. This year he has talent and depth yet still doesn't seem to be able to put together a happy, well-functioning team.

In 18 full seasons with 3 schools, he's winning at a 64% clip, has been to the NCAAT 11 times and the NIT another 4. He has had 1 losing season, his second year at Alabama. Those aren't Carolina or Duke numbers but they are very respectable. They certainly suggest he knows what he is doing.

It would be interesting to know the inside story. Is he having the kind of in-house problems that Matt had here? Something else?

Is the problem Gottfried, State, both?

Who would want that job? Can they get anyone who is "known" or are they stuck with some no-name youngster for whom this is a big step up?

They were 16-17 last year, right? That's a losing season at State and Alabama. He's also sub .500 in the ACC since coming to State....overall and has only been above .500 in the ACC 3 of his 6 years at State. He's also regressed consistently year over year. The trending is not good.

2011–12 NC State 24–13 9–7 T–4th NCAA Sweet 16
2012–13 NC State 24–11 11–7 T–4th NCAA Second Round
2013–14 NC State 22–14 9–9 7th NCAA Second Round
2014–15 NC State 22–14 10–8 T–6th NCAA Sweet 16
2015–16 NC State 16–17 5–13 13th
2016–17 NC State 14–12 3–10

Pretty much the same reason Gottfried will be canned is the reason Sendek was canned......can't consistently beat Carolina or Duke.

I'd expect the the Gregg Marshall train to pick up some steam in the next month.

Well they want Archie, of course. Can't blame them but wouldn't it be hilarious if he turns them down? Marshall would be a good choice too but I thought he had a good deal ( and a lot less pressure) at Wichita.

Archie Miller is a great young coach. Not sure he'd want that train wreck though. Could make or break his career trajectory.

Marshall is the very best they can hope for and honestly don't see that as long as Yow is tending the Farm.

its amazing if hicks watches tape and defend like Maye..less fouls..excellent help defense

70-49..Maye is playing better ball than Hicks..better player should start..he is hitting the 3..in position on defense..besides Hicks cant foul from bench

serious question...how the heck did they let Anya get so big....he was not a bad player when he was 30 pounds lighter.....he can hardly move out there! Where was their strength and conditioning coach?

IMO the coaching job done by Gott with the talent on that team is the worst I've seen in 50 years of watching ACC basketball. The only excuse for that team being this bad is poor coaching. He has zero control over the players while they're on the court, no set plays, no defense, no nothing. It's kinda sad........nah, not really!

Hey wolf pac fans, ain't karma a biatch! What happened last night was that UNC drove the final coffin nail on yet another one of your coaches! Really, it wasn't a coffin nail this game or the last one we payed it was more of a grounding rod, much longer than a coffin nail, we got them at Target, they were on sale, we bought a couple just for you! :-O

Who can they get, who would want to wade in to this mess, it is a 5 alarm dumpster fire. It was bad enough their season imploded from those dumb pre-season top 25 projections. But to make matters even worse the AD has totally botched things to the extent that the whole world knows Gotfried has Got-Fired when they lose that last game, which will come against who ever they play in their first ACCT game. Yow has sent the message that not only do their fans expect more than can be delivered but don't expect the AD to have your back either? Who the heck wants any of that?

Archie, want to see your promising career as a coach go down the tubes, take the NC State job but ya better get your insurance license at the same time so you can have a plan B gig to fall back on!

Hey, I know who would be the perfect fit for the NC St head coaching job, their favorite son, the man that gives them hope beyond any other, the one man that does inspire them, the one man their fans would totally rally around and believe in and the NC St head coaching job should be able to pay better than the N&O does, Dan Kane...LOL

Lots of talent on that roster, Coach Gott just caters to his star players which is causing the team to play "street ball". If they had a decent coach, they would be dangerous. Well, minus the ball hog.

Yep. Thanks for the correction. Old eyes.

The conference record and the regression are definitely important. I suspect last year was viewed as a fluke and that things would be good this year. But now it may look more like the early years were the fluke.

I've wondered the same. Kid could probably play for money if he shed 60 pounds.

Obviously he lacks the self-discipline to do it on his own, but why isn't he getting the help he needs help from his team and school?

Is there a bigger bust than Yertseven??
Clearly the transition to this level of play was much steeper than expected. Didn't help that he missed a bunch of games, either. He's been playing catch-up and he just isn't catching up.

My sense is that he could turn into a very good player with the right team and coach. Possibly as soon as next year, but certainly by his junior year.

I see him listed as a 2nd round pick next year on both of the mock draft sites I check. That's a big drop from middle 1st round this year that some mocks were projecting back in the summer.
