Why Berry shouldn't start right now:
When he and Paige are on the court at the same time we allow 112.7 points per 100 possessions. Unadjusted, that would rank 336th in the country.
When Berry is in the game at all, we allow 104.9 points per 100 possessions. Unadjusted, that would rank 218th in the country.
LOL, yeah, there is Jung, found him a stat to diss Joel berry, no matter what the situations are. I think it is pure decpetion to suggest any of our guards struggle on defense without looking at Britt first. Not to dump on nate but the simple truth is that he isn't in there for his defense, he is in there for his ability to hit jump shots. Since just prior to straining his groin and definitly since he came back from that injury and being sick, Joel berry has been the best PG defender this team has, it really hasn't been close. Marcus has struggled to defend and Britt has honestly not been strong as a defender. What has the song consistently been since Joel came back, we are in a hole, Berry comes in and we claw back, Berry goes out and things even back up again? You have watched that same thing play out game after game of late, exactly why you see Roy go to Joel as his first guard sub, not Nate, Nate got what, 1 minute vs Harvard? And why, because harvard slowed the pace and forsed us in to a half court game and that is in particular where nate struggles as a defender. So tell me Jung, are both myself and Roy wrong?
I promise ya jung, you will see a lot more of the game from watching it than you will reading the stat sheet. Not picking on Britt, just the fact is he is a little fella that takes a lot of bad angles on the defensive end, forces us to help defend way to much. Fortunately vs Arky the half court sets were limited so his defense lapses didn't hurt us that much. Nate can give you some scoring, the probllems come when he gives up more on the defensive end than he gives on the offensive end. Joel takes MUCH better defensive angles, stays between his man & the ball, doesn't force his mates to have to help defend and is physically stronger allowing him to fight thru a lot of the same screens that rub Nate off.
Much of the stats that jung wants to use here is because Joel has not run all season with the starters, he has been in more with them lately, but earlier season his PT was liimited he was getting time with mates that were not really defending well. From WATCHING THE GAMES and not so much the stat sheet, right now, at this point in time, of the 5 PGs we have on roster, Joel berry is BY FAR THE BETTER DEFENDER, it isn't really close. marcus has struggled big time staying in front of PGs this season, he has struggled to stay in front of a lot of the 2 guards. Much of that IMO is his injuries have liimited him IMO more on the defensive end and the fact the kid plays so many minutes.
I can assure anyone reading this, especially those that work for ESPN, Roy would not be giving Joel the lion share of the PG minutes when Marcus is not at the point if Nate Britt was a solid defender, not with the way Nate has been able to knock down jump shots this season, if nate was defending Joel would not be playing folks, Joel is playing a lot now days, you do the math.
Again, I am not dumping on Nate, felt nate played well last night in that first half, felt he payed a little more than I wanted in the second half but was tickled to death to see him block that shot late. But when the conversation is about nate & Joel as defenders and it is suggested that nate is a better defender then I just have to speak up. I have made it a focus point this season to watch nate defend and Joel just to see the difference, not only in their man defense but how it effects the rest of the team when both are in. The difference is about as wide as that little ditch they call the Grand Canyon. Whisky is more of a half court offense, as has been the case with most of our foes this season, nate shines much more when the game is more up & down, in the half court he has been abused hard and that just is not the case with Joel, sorry, it just isn't.
By the way, the discussion should not be do we start Joel or JP, the discussion should be do we start Joel or Jackson, that has always been the question IMO. The small lineup I want to see is Joel, Marcus, JP, Theo, & Brice. That for me is our best defensive line up and IMO makes it very hard to keep us from running, JP & Theo are fly paper defenders and berry is very solid as a defender, Brice at times can defend and Marcus can defend at times as well if he isn't having to play in the the high 30's miunute wise. With all the work Marcus does trying to hsake the junk defenses that key on stopping him the kid just gets a little winded and I see that on the defensive end a lot more this season than last.
