Hate this had to happen but honestly I am not really surprised. The way this roster has filled out it has shuffled Wilcher further and further back, it kind of had to be either Seth or Wilcher that backed out and it was more likely to be Wilcher. Why is pretty easy to see if you are wiling to look, this kid is really talented, on the cusp of being potentially 1&D and of course he would need serious playing time to make that happen. Where was that PT going to come from next season?
Do the math, RJ starts at the 2 and Cadeau at the point, forget for a second that Wilcher wanted to play on the ball, we will get to that, where would Wilcher fall in the 2 guard rotation, well it was for sure behind RJ, it was pretty certain behind Ryan as well, so not better than 3rd in the rotation at the 2. Well at 6'4-5" you may suggest that maybe he could play the 3 some, I have consistently shared that I saw the 3 as Ingram to start backed up by Wojick who like Wilcher is as well 6'5" and around 200lbs so why was I not listing Wilcher as maybe the primary back up for Ingram at the 3 would be legit to ask? It is because as a 2 Wilcher would still handle the ball some and there is a open question of who the primary back up for Cadeau will be, I prefer that to be Seth but it could have well been a competition between Wilcher and Seth, we would have to see how that fell out. In my view that put Wilcher no better than a tie for now as to who backs up Cadeau but could very easy end up 3rd there as well yet he wants to be on the ball.
Before Cadeau reclassed, I argued that I would have still moved RJ to the 2 and because I am just not a fan of RJ at the point, yet we al know RJ was going to be at the point had Cadeau not reclassed. But I agred for Wilcher to be in the mix for PT minutes because the kid plays on the ball now, was told he didn't to the extent I shook my head, not a fan of arguing smoke screen nonsense. Very clearly, for this kid to be on the NBA radar he has to be a PG, fits that NBA metrix much better than he does as a 2 and not in the discussion of a NBA 3. Classic case of a college decision made for a NBA reason, those don't work out so well for us typically.
What you end up with is a kid very possible 3rd in the rotation at the point, could be 4th, 3 in the rotation at the 2, 3rd in the rotation at the 3 (a position he does NOT want to play) and 3rd in the rotation means VERY limited playing time for a kid considered at worst on the cusp of being a 1&D and the result was that didn't work for him and it is understandable rather than surprising. What is surprising is that it took till now for this to happen because Cadeau reclassing was one of the worst kept secrets ever and Seth has not shown any indication that he is looking to do anything but hang in there and fight for minutes, these are not new or surprising developments.
