Wilcher

I didn't expect him to help us much this year other than providing depth. Was really looking forward to what he could do in a couple of years. I don't get the idea that he is 1 and done or that he needs to be "on ball" to get to the NBA. The average SG in the NBA is 6'5". If he needs some weight and strength (which he does), he would have been at the right place at UNC. But, how does a kid have the confidence to think he's gonna fast track it to the NBA but not have the confidence that he would crack our lineup for some PT?
I would suggest that you check out David Sisk pod on youtube discussing why the kid did this, I think what he says may change your perspective of this.

With Cadeau, Davis, and Ryan likely starting, I expected Wilcher to be the first guard off the bench barring some major offensive improvements from Trimble.

But I suppose the promises and money Pitino is offering looks more attractive.

Hate this had to happen but honestly I am not really surprised. The way this roster has filled out it has shuffled Wilcher further and further back, it kind of had to be either Seth or Wilcher that backed out and it was more likely to be Wilcher. Why is pretty easy to see if you are wiling to look, this kid is really talented, on the cusp of being potentially 1&D and of course he would need serious playing time to make that happen. Where was that PT going to come from next season?

Do the math, RJ starts at the 2 and Cadeau at the point, forget for a second that Wilcher wanted to play on the ball, we will get to that, where would Wilcher fall in the 2 guard rotation, well it was for sure behind RJ, it was pretty certain behind Ryan as well, so not better than 3rd in the rotation at the 2. Well at 6'4-5" you may suggest that maybe he could play the 3 some, I have consistently shared that I saw the 3 as Ingram to start backed up by Wojick who like Wilcher is as well 6'5" and around 200lbs so why was I not listing Wilcher as maybe the primary back up for Ingram at the 3 would be legit to ask? It is because as a 2 Wilcher would still handle the ball some and there is a open question of who the primary back up for Cadeau will be, I prefer that to be Seth but it could have well been a competition between Wilcher and Seth, we would have to see how that fell out. In my view that put Wilcher no better than a tie for now as to who backs up Cadeau but could very easy end up 3rd there as well yet he wants to be on the ball.

Before Cadeau reclassed, I argued that I would have still moved RJ to the 2 and because I am just not a fan of RJ at the point, yet we al know RJ was going to be at the point had Cadeau not reclassed. But I agred for Wilcher to be in the mix for PT minutes because the kid plays on the ball now, was told he didn't to the extent I shook my head, not a fan of arguing smoke screen nonsense. Very clearly, for this kid to be on the NBA radar he has to be a PG, fits that NBA metrix much better than he does as a 2 and not in the discussion of a NBA 3. Classic case of a college decision made for a NBA reason, those don't work out so well for us typically.

What you end up with is a kid very possible 3rd in the rotation at the point, could be 4th, 3 in the rotation at the 2, 3rd in the rotation at the 3 (a position he does NOT want to play) and 3rd in the rotation means VERY limited playing time for a kid considered at worst on the cusp of being a 1&D and the result was that didn't work for him and it is understandable rather than surprising. What is surprising is that it took till now for this to happen because Cadeau reclassing was one of the worst kept secrets ever and Seth has not shown any indication that he is looking to do anything but hang in there and fight for minutes, these are not new or surprising developments.
I agree with almost all of this as spot on with most of my feelings on why the move made sense to me. The only small exception is I believe RJ will be Hubert's main backup at point for minutes after Cadeau.

That would leave Wilcher as vying for time with Trimble as the 3rd option at the 1 or the 2 depending on individual game need. An even worse situation to develop the in game skill set he wants to do if it is the case.

I'm thinking Indiana is more of the fit he desired to have to develop his in game needed areas as of now after UNC's addition. Situations change especially with the portal and reclassifications.

I think he knows that ball handling and some on ball skills is an area he NEEDS to develop. As a combo he wants minutes at both spots to develop. If he waits to begin that it delays the NBA evaluation if he is capable. The league happily will take those that show the ability for them to then develop it tothe pro game system. Watch the draft, it again will be heavy on YOUNG talent (G league, freshmen/sophmores), few upper classmen. That is why I think how he will be utilized mattered to him more then just getting other forms of PT starting this year.

If a guy who supposedly grew up a Heels’ fan and signed a LOI very recently will do this, my interest in college sports has finally been extinguished. We’re no better than UK/KU/AZ/d00k, just renting mercenaries temporarily. If this is the new college sports, I think I’m done. It’s been a great ride though.

I agree Arch, though there still are some very good examples of loyalty on the team in Mando and RJ.
I’m willing to wait and see if this is the exception or if it becomes the norm…. Will Hubert continue to make wholesale annual changes or will he build a ‘program’ worth following?

Has Hubert had more decommits at this point than Roy had in 17 years? Has college basketball changed that much in the last two years or was Roy’s extreme loyalty to a kid and not recruiting over them superior to Huberts? I just find it interesting how loyal Roy was to kids and how it was reciprocated in comparison to what we are seeing recently with GG and Wilcher. Hopefully this is not a recurring trend with Carolina recruiting.

It’s not Hubert entirely, it’s the state of college basketball. Certainly Roy would’ve handled things differently, but alas, I’m pretty sure that’s why he’s not doing it anymore.

It’s happening everywhere just not at unc. GG would have been here if not for nance. It’s a different world. I personally hate the transfer portal but think it’s the way to go to build a roster with a couple young bucks. Kids don’t want to stay in the same place long unless they are the man. Even then kansas (bitches) have damn near completely had to rebuild their roster twice now.

He's already got a visit to St John's scheduled this week.
Slick Rick will be putting on the full court press on how he can be the primary ball handler, and what he can earn with the NIL. St. John's has 2 committed players for 2023, and 9 transfers, with 2 open positions. Do not bet against them securing his commitment.

Pretty sure Pitino was tampering with him for a while now. I'm just assuming the visit is a formality before he officially announces his commitment.

That's a lie.

GG and his dad repeatedly told the UNC coaches he had no interest in reclassifying. While Hubert was in Mexico cheering on GG and Trimble, GG's mom was meeting with South Carolina boosters to secure millions in NIL money based on the condition that he decommitted from UNC, reclassed, and committed to South Carolina.

Pete Nance had absolutely nothing to do with GG bailing on UNC. GG's mom wanted him at South Carolina, and she got what she wanted. In the interim GG and his pastor father repeatedly lied to Hubert and Lebo, and South Carolina broke NCAA rules by using NIL to induce a recruit to commit.

Not that anything would ever happen (if it didn't happen to Bill Self who was on FBI surveillance for f-sake) but who investigates obvious tampering like this?

You sign your LOI and spew love, decommit and have a visit scheduled for 2 days later? Jeez, they aren't even hiding the tampering!

The Caleb convo I saw was with B Daht, not Mando. But I can’t find it on B Daht’s IG or Twitter, and nothing is under Caleb’s replies on Twitter, so I have a hard time believing it’s real.

I have a screenshot of it. But idk how to post it. But it's undoubtedly fake.

Yeah, I have it too. I tried to upload it last night but for some reason Rivals still has it so you have to upload it to a website and then copy the url link to get it to post. It’s archaic Rivals! 🤣

Just spit ballin here, but does Hubert look at Stevenson reclassification or maybe kicking the tires on Arthur Kaluma who is now in the portal after pulling out of the draft as an additional 4.

Then just going with Ingram and Ryan as main 3's with RJ and Trimble main 2's, Wojcik as break in the case of emergency.
Why would hubcap even consider having players re class (with some exception), or why would players even consider a reclass when hubs actions indicate he's turned in to a portal coach and has little or no interest in player development on any level. He, by his actions, appear to be turning UNC bball in to a hybrid between AAU and the G league. Where am I wrong in this line of thinking?

I would say in thinking Hubert has made that change. That change has been in place and is already the norm for how top talent wants to develop. The doors are not shut on opportunities for them to reclassify or move when a choice they made is not "right" for them.

Many do not want to be stagnant in their minds and not max out a situation to prepare for a career early. Small, but very lucrative earning window in athletics. Hubert would be silly to put his head in the sand and ignore the portal and reclassifications as would any player be foolish not check all their opportunities.

It is the reality, one Hubert did not implement, but it is the reality of the job today.

Part of me is hoping that this year’s massive roster turnover is more situational rather than an indication of policy. Only time will tell.
But, after the year he just had, my guess is Hubert felt that time is a luxury he didn’t have.
I believe the extraordinary underperformance last year prompted a wholesale gutting of the roster. I hope moving forward we will see much more player development and much less reliance on ‘guns for hire’
As I said though… time will tell.

I am afraid of the alternative to my optimistic view.
There is virtually no regulation on NIL and the transfer rules have become so lax that an escalation of this chaos seems likely.

Here’s a crazy idea: since college players are professionals anyway, how long todo you think it’ll be before players who left for the NBA with eligibility remaining but didn’t make it go back to college? If Justin Jackson goes another couple of years out of thr NBA, could he come back and play his last year at UNC?

I’ve heard crazier Oz. That fact that it’s not so far fetched is scary. Lol

i can see all barriers or differences between college and pro disappearing. on the court, college ball has been a (less efficient) version of NBA for a while, one on one take the first available shot, etc. so eroding other distinctions between college and pro is simply following the trend.

CBB just isn't as much fun ...this being another example.I wish him well..but hey Jay Bilas wanted this crap for years...happy now Jay?
This! F ing Bilas has been advocate for this for years and he hardly even commented on the negative ramifications it has had on College basketball. Head in sand, still doubling down on " Best for the athlete" bullshit. How is the ultimate possibility of College sports going extinct the " Best for the athlete "🤨

The problem with NIL and portal is that it wasn't thought through, with no real guard rails.
No .. it was well thought out because the long term, and continuing goal, of the NCAA was to bring parity to college sports. Their (NCAA) agenda is $$ focused and the more parity they provide the more schools have a shot at the big prize and the more viewers (revenue) they get. jmo

There is not one shred of evidence that college bball is going away! Free agency did not kill pro sports even though many peeps claimed it would. The designated hitter did not kill baseball. Zones did not kill pro bball and the shot clock or 3 pt line did not kill college bball! Peeps love their pro teams just as much now as they did then. I will love UNC all the way through all the changes and nothing external will change that! If UNC decides to change and, for example, starts firing coaches simply because they have a bad season or don't play the style online experts like; OR if UNC starts compromising ethically and/or abandons the Family idea or the Carolina Way-This would cause me to change my loyalty! The game will always evolve, sometimes in unfortunate ways, but UNC will adjust and find a way to succeed!

That isn't what the new president of the NCAA said: "I think it was a big mistake by the NCAA not to do a framework around NIL when they had the opportunity to," Baker said during the Future of College Athletics Summit, not far from Capitol Hill. "And I think there were too many people in college sports who thought no rules would work really well for them. And what everybody's discovered is no rules, no transparency, no accountability, no framework, doesn't work well for anybody."

And was, by all reports, miserable on a team that was ten games under .500. Good for him.
