Would you rank Berry in your top 5 all time Carolina Point guards

It's not fantasy basketball. A great PG in UNC's sytems have always been guys that lead and elevate their teams by doing whatever they have to do to make the team better. If you asked last years team including JJ I promise you they will tell you that Joel was the rock , the glue to keep things going steady. Stats matter but results matter more. If you put a Jeff McGinnis over Berry you are just flat out wrong in your assessments of UNC PG's. Talent maybe but full package of what a PG needs to be.... No! Hell Derrick Phelps never averaged double digits PPG in any season stat geek. Terrible post , I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul!

It doesn't matter what YOU thing about my post. It's an OPINION (mine) and I don't recall asking you or anyone else to award me points on my OPINION. And I would hope GOD will have mercy on my soul, but certainly not for something as trivial as a sports OPINION.......oh, by the way Jimmy Black never had to avg double digits PPG either. I believe he won a national SHIP too. But, he didn't have to because of some guys name James, Sam and a freshmen name Michael. You have your opinion and I have mine............and by the way I think Jimmy was a better PG (in my opinion of course)

Yea the guy who didn't win crap and got down with a program great and assistant coaches wife has no argument above Berry. No matter what you come up with in that delusional little hamster wheel of yours.

1) Ford
2) K Smith
3) Cota
4) Lawson
5) Felton
6) Black
7) Marshall

These are my top seven PG's. I may be incline to put Phelps and McGinnis in front of Berry. My definition of a PG is one that facilitates, get players the ball where they can be effective with the ability to score. I think Pinson is more of a facilitator than Berry. Berry is an outstanding athlete that can flat out score. He get his jersey in the rafters because of ONE game. That one did netted us a Ship, but we all watched the same tourney we all know who was the real MOP, but that's a topic for another time. How can he be a top 5 when he's barely dropping 3 dimes a game? To be fair, his legacy is still being written. Let's have this discussion at the end of his senior year.....
Nice definition, but I can tell you for a fact anyone who's played with him during his 3 seasons in Chapel Hill would laugh at your rather myopic understanding of JB's facilitating prowess.

I am OLD school for sure but the best 11 that I have seen, in order, are:

1. Ford - quickness with scoring and distribution. I have not seen a PG with the same pull-up mid-range shooting ability since Phil.
2. Lawson - Speed and toughness personified. With a Natty.
3. Smith. Jet. Period.
4. Felton- Of course, another Natty. Ray Ray defined toughness.
5. Cota - Underappreciated by the over-hyped NBA.
6. Paige- Should have had a Natty. You can see it in his eyes... he loves being a Tar Heel.
7. Berry- One more solid year and he moves up.
8. Marshall- Wish he had stayed just one more year.
9. Black - Set his ego aside to help The Big 3 win a Natty.
10. Phelps - Loved his defense in addition to ball handling in '93.
11. Grubar - A 6'4" PG in the late 60s with Scott, Clark, Bunting, etc. They had a great run until they ran into Lew Alcindor.

King Rice deserves Honorable Mention, mostly due to his defensive efforts versus Squirrelly Hurley.

I continue to be confused/perplexed by some of these rankings specific to Berry being outside the top 5. As a point guard, you are ultimately evaluated on your ability to lead your team to wins. Berry arguably has a resume that could put him at the top when it's all said and done. Back to back national title games. Final four MVP. Acc tourney MVP. 1 of only 7 players ever to score more than 20 points twice in a national title game. And he still has 1 year left.....no way you can make any rational argument for anybody that doesn't have at least that type resume to be above him unless you just use the "well I really liked him argument."

Tar Heel PG's tend to be my favorite heels. We better appreciate Berry this last year because we will miss him dearly when he's gone. He's one of our all time greats.

We are fortunate to have had some great PGs.

Berry is definitely under appreciated, which is most likely do to him still playing. If he was from the 70s, 80s, or 90s he'd probably be everyones number 1 because of his resume.

Even with how everyone talks about Phil I don't see how Berry wouldn't surpass him if he leads us to another National Championship.

If Berry leads us to national title again this year, he's #1. Hell if he gets us to final 4 again or even the national title game, resume would be hard to argue against as being the best ever at the PG spot for us.

The discussion would sure be warranted if Joel is able to lead this coming team back to the final 4, it would become a legit question between he and Phil with IMO a good bit of separation between #2 and #3.

Just throwing these out there... From the Post game notes https://northcarolina.rivals.com/news/national-title-postgame-notes

• Joel Berry II was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2017 Final Four. He joins James Worthy (1982), Donald Williams (1993), Sean May (2005) and Wayne Ellington (2009) as Final Four MOPs.

• Berry became seventh player to score 20 or more points in consecutive national championship games. He had 20 points vs. Villanova in 2016 and 22 vs. Gonzaga in 2017. He joins UCLA’s Bill Walton, Lew Alcindor and Gail Goodrich, San Francisco’s Bill Russell, La Salle’s Charley Singley and Oklahoma State’s Bob Kurland as the only players to score 20 points in consecutive championship games. He is the first player to do so since Walton in 1972 and 1973. (First point guard ever to do this.)

• Berry is the first Tar Heel point guard, but the fourth consecutive point guard to win Most Outstanding Player honors at the Final Four (UConn’s Shabazz Napier in 2014, Duke’s Tyus Jones in 2015 and Villanova’s Ryan Arcidiacono in 2016).

• Berry is the first player to earn All-Final Four honors in consecutive seasons since Butler’s Shelvin Mack in 2010 and 2011.

• Berry is the first Tar Heel to earn All-Final Four honors in two different seasons.

Interesting thread.
Point guards or not, Phil Ford is still the 2nd best college basketball player I've ever seen play the game. Since #1 is a wuffie he will remain unnamed.
Joel is by the way in my top 5. JMHO
I wonder how many of you who actually saw Phil play do not rank him as our best?

Absolutely yes!!!

There is one criteria l look for in any player, any position. All these point guards have one thing in common which make them our very best. All these following exemplified ability and leadership. They are T Kearns, J. Black, D Phelps, Ray Ray, T Lawson, J Berry. Their results speak for themselves.

They are CHAMPIONS!!!!

Im 31 so I'm going with what I seen.

1-Lawson
2-Felton
3-Berry
4-Cota
5-Marshall
6-Larry Drew is my top six.................LOL just count the first five lol

It's called effectiveness! The proof is in the pudding!
I guess not many of you saw Tommy Kearns play for the 57 Heels .... we have not had a better floor general .... and one who could knock down a 40 footer when they packed it in against Lenny and Joe Q.

These guys went 32--0.
Quit arguing and just give thanks!

To me, the answer is that they were all Tar Heels ... and the HEELS are the best!!!!

And, yes ..... never forget TK jumping cennter against Wilt ... a great move by Coach McGUIRE!

Wilt said it totally blew his mind!

Thought Carolina was trying to shame him because of his height ... true!
