2017-2018 OOTB other UNC sports thread

Lady Heels beat #15 duke yesterday.

In OT after coming back from 19 down.
You don't say?

Women's basketball has come back from a 19-point deficit against #15 dook. Paris Kea just hit a 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds left to send the game to overtime. Game is on FS1 if you're looking for a way to pass halftime of the Jags-Patriots game.

Lady Heels pull off the upset in Carmichael, 92-86. First win against the dookies since March 2, 2014 (and you thought @TarHeelNation11 complains about Roy getting owned too much).

-#7 ranked women's tennis team took out ECU and Davidson to move to 4-0 on the year.
-Men's LAX is #9 in preseason poll
-Mikayla Robinson (gymnastics) won EAGL specialist of the week

LOL. I had no idea who you were talking about, but I knew why you said it before I even looked him up.
He tried his hand at football (WR) for a season or two, but then went back to lacrosse full-time.

Just as a fun tidbit: Per the Bear Bryant rule, McNeil counted against the 85 football scholarship number for the 1-2 years he was on the team, but as soon as he went just full-time lacrosse, he no longer counted against the 85 cap.

Little did I know.... this would be a timely poast!!

Carolina just received a commitment from Ricky Miezan, who is a Class of 2018 recruit from Alexandria, Va. In football, Miezan is a 3*** athlete. In lacrosse, however, Miezan is the #3 overall prospect in the nation (per InsideLacrosse), and is a middie.

Per his Tweet, Miezan will attempt to play both sports at Carolina. As I said in my last poast about McNeill, if Miezan makes the football team, he must count as a football scholarship, even if he plays both football and lacrosse. So, how I imagine this will play out, is Miezan will arrive on campus in August, participate in football's fall camp, and at that time, Fedora and staff will decide if he's good enough to warrant a scholarship spot on the team (if they even have any unused scholarships remaining at that point they could give him). Then, regardless of what happens in the fall, he'll begin his UNC lacrosse career in the Spring 2019 semester.

Here's his Rivals profile.
Here's InsideLacrosse's Top 25 recruits for the 2018 Class. Notre Dame has 4 of the Top 25. Carolina has 3. Duke and Syracuse have 2. Virginia has 1. Overall, Carolina has the 5th best class in the nation.

Question for you. I was under the impression from your post and the NCAA bylaws, that if he plays football it has to count as a football scholarship. No exceptions. Deana said on blitz that for his first year he will be on a lacrosse scholarship. Is he not going to play football his freshman year or am I not understanding the scholarship rules?

The keyword is "plays." I didn't know this either, but actually getting on the field is the determination. In other words, he will practice with the team for the entire football season but will redshirt and not appear in a game. Then in spring, he will play lacrosse. For that one year, he can count as lacrosse only. But then in fall 2019, he will have to go against the 85 football number if he sticks with the team.

Interesting. Seems like a loophole that SEC teams would have exploited endlessly.

SEC teams don't field lacrosse teams, or men's soccer teams. I'm not actually sure why, either. Most of those schools are huge. Metro Atlanta is teeming with lacrosse talent and soccer talent, and UGA doesn't field men's version of either.

Yeah, I know. Now that I know about this potential loophole I'm even more surprised that SEC teams haven't started these teams just to exploit the rule. Hopefully no one tells Saban about it.

To be honest though, I'm surprised the SEC Network hasn't put pressure on SEC schools to start lacrosse teams and men's soccer teams, especially lacrosse since that runs in the spring. I'm sure the SEC Network struggles for content in the spring. I know you're probably thinking that lacrosse is not the best sport to air to draw in SEC fan viewers, but you'd be surprised. A lot of SEC schools have fans that will watch anything, as long as UGA or Tennessee are playing in it.

The women's tennis team has just earned another national championship trophy for the case.

Trust me, I'm not trying to diminish anything. I covered women's tennis for the DTH as a student, so I completely respect how tough of competitors the team usually is.

I was merely pointing out for those who were unaware, that isn't an NCAA title, so it doesn't get added to the "official count" of UNC NCAA national titles. It's analogous to the hoops team winning the pre-season NIT, except it's more prestigious/competitive than the pre-season NIT.

Miezan is now looking at Stanford because they offered him a football scholarship (Miezan didn't sign an LOI on NSD because he has to sign as a lacrosse player in April). I would *think* he's just doing his due diligence because Stanford is Stanford and offers excellent career opportunity, given that NLL players don't make a ton.

But Stanford doesn't have a varsity lacrosse team, and Miezan is so good at that sport, I can't imagine he would bail on a chance to star at Carolina. But you never know.

If you want some company give me a shout. Never been. Pretty sure I don’t have shit to do until the basketball game that night.

Weather ain’t looking too good right now. We will check again Thurs eve

I love insights like this that break down the Xs and Os with video. Makes it so much easier to understand the subject material.

Lacrosse is a lot like basketball in many ways. Slides are the same thing as help defense. Fast breaks work the same. Cuts and picks are happening all day.

The main differences have to do with the lines and substitutions, which seem much more confusing than they really are.

Yeah, saw that. In the grand scheme of things not a huge deal in a baseball season but definitely kind of sucky.
