Let's Talk Trump

Cool story. That doesn't change the fact that Strum said people should vote for who they like best regardless of chance of winning.
I sure did! I still do!

I'm not voting for Sanders (assuming I do) or Johnson because they are the lesser of two evils, and least of all so "the worse guy doesn't win."

Derp!

Makes sense to me....

And from the sound of it Bernie is gradually becoming the candidate he like the best. What part of that are you having difficulty comprehending?

I would bet at least 80% of people in this country don't know what demagogue means. I would also guess that there were plenty of anti Trump people goggling it. Good job by the New Yorker trying to make it seem like Trump supporters are stupid though.
I had to look it up and I've got a pretty darn good vocabulary and have been a good writer all my life.

I'm not a fan of The New Yorker, but about all the news outlets are carrying the story not just the New Yorker.

That doesn't surprise me. It really is sad that journalism has gotten this bad. This is a non story that was only reported on to make Trump look bad. I bet you they're not tracking goggle trends when Hillary supporters use "big words."

You got to read this, it is so funny.

Lie. I read it and I don't see where anything in there was even remotely funny, never mind "so funny"

"Moments after Hawking made the remark, Google reported a sharp increase in searches for the terms “demagogue,” “denominator,” and “Stephen Hawking.”

I can't speak for the demagogue and denominator searches... but the "Stephen Hawking" searches were definitely me. No, not because I was focused on an irrelevant tidbit that isn't even worth publishing, but because I constantly google search him to see if I've hit the death pool yet. Maybe if I'm lucky some Trump supporter will go unplug him so I can collect my $130.

Hawking is completely right in this regard though. Trump is a demagogue. Here's the definition (for those of you who don't like Trump but feel stupid being lumped in with Trump supporters by having to google it yourselves and then ruining the hypocritical fun you're having by calling Trump supporters who don't know what it means stupid): a political leader who seeks support by appealing to popular desires and prejudices rather than by using rational argument.

That's exactly what Trump is doing. He's gaining support by appealing to popular desires. He's not using rational arguments - but that's because rational arguments are a "been there done that". The majority of voting Americans haven't listened to rational arguments as to why illegal immigration is bad, how much public assistance programs are abused, and why it's important to take care of Americans before sending money off to other countries. So continuing to use rational arguments would be insane (repeating an act and expecting a different result). Time to try a new tactic - which is being a demagogue.

I liked this quote (emphasis mine):

“For a so-called genius, this was an epic fail,” Trump’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, said. “If Professor Hawking wants to do some damage, maybe he should try talking in English next time.”

Quentin Tarantino should change the dialogue in Pulp Fiction from: "English, do you speak it....?" to "English, do you talk in it....?" Ironically, "epic fail" isn't even proper English since fail is a verb. "Epic failure" is. Also, referring to Hawking as a "so-called" genius only makes one person look stupid.

Hawking is completely right in this regard though. Trump is a demagogue.
Absolutely true. And while I don't disagree that Trump is trying a different tact, what historically happens when demagogues rise to power is a terrifying precedent

I'm sorry but I am not about to apologize for knowing what the word "demagogue" means. The piece was "so funny" because it describes Trump so well.

Garbage. Just more left-wing media bias which I don't find amusing at all. Is the New Yorker going to do a story on what Larry The Cable Guy thinks of Bernie Sanders? I doubt it.

THN had the best post of the year earlier today when the first sentence of his poast in the General Lee thread said this: "I hate people." Right on, man. Right on.

I might as well make it my signature because I say it all the time, including like 5 times recently on this board.

I want Trump to win the election just for the sheer comedy of watching all the news outlets that have crapped on him along the way realize they don't have as much control over the minds of the voters as they thought they did.

And also to watch all the celebs who said they'd leave the country if he was elected be put to the test. We know none of them will actually leave because they have it too nice here, but it'll be fun to watch them have to backtrack on their words as well.

They'd only triple down and start working on their "how do we get him impeached?" PR campaign, probably.

I want him to win so I can collect $100 from Lyles. And I want to watch him and Julez have head explosions

The irony is that all the media coverage is a) MOAR MEDIA COVERAGE and b) emboldening his supporters. The number one trending topic on Google News for the last umpteen months running is "Donald Trump."

Donald Trump has made the media his bitches and they can't do a damn thing about it.

The funny thing is -- and Trump is a really smart guy -- I'm not sure he's even trying to. It's just Donald being Donald.

Oh, I think he is baiting them along as needed. Hence the recent "I will debate Bernie" comment.

Trump's objective is to dominate the news cycle. He's doing great.

Trump counts on them to respond the way they do. It's an embarrassment to this country to have that guy in-place to be president. I'm ashamed of the whole country.

I'm now hearing ALL the talk radio yahoos changing their tune. For some reason, they seemed to have dumped Michael Medved's show in favor of Hannity's now, on my local station. They kept Prager, but Medved was uber-critical of Trump and they replaced him in the afternoon. I love listening to those guys. They have a great gig. I just wonder if they actually believe the BS that they shovel to their audience or if it's all an act to keep the audience tuned-in. I know Howard Stern is 95% an act when he's on the air.

How is it an embarrassment to have Trump running and no mention of the embarrassment of the dems down to a socialist and a communist with the communist all but winning their nomination?

DSouthr I have to admire how you can complain about the media/public criticisms of Trump and then in the same breath completely mischaracterize and/or oversimplify the candidates on the other side of the aisle, all in complete seriousness. Well done. That's why the discourse on this board is so effective and fruitful.

Admit it, you are just looking for someone from raidar so you can excoriate and eviscerate their poasts today. ;)

I've challenged you on the same thing though. Dave might have wrongfully characterized the dems' choices, but the fact remains that you and the media act like Trump running is some sign of the apocalypse while you sit and say nothing about two people who are equally jokey on the other side. Please explain.

A Socialist and a Communist? If you really believe that, this is pointless to even try to discuss. if Hillary Clinton were a true Socialist, she wouldn't be int he pockets of just about every Wall Street entity and every munitions/war industrialist's pocket. I might give you that Bernie Sanders is a "Socialist", especially through the filter of American political understanding. But, "Communist" is not Josef Stalin's Soviet Union or Mao Tse Dong's Red China. Those were dictatorships, period. They are no more an example of Communism than the USA is an example of a representative Republic now.

If the Democrats had Charles Manson as their nominee, it would be an embarrassment. And, you know what? Donald Trump would STILL be an embarrassment as a nominee also. It's interesting to me how people are hard-wired to react with "well, what about the OTHER side?" when confronted with an obvious disaster. When your response is "Well, theirs is worse."... you've lost. No, WE'VE lost!

And I've responded to your challenge by saying that I'm not interested in defending Hillary or Bernie. It's largely a waste of time and an exercise in frustration to try to have an actual discussion on this topic in this forum due to the polarization. So I might post a meme or a jab here or there, but you guys can have at it with the rants and raves; I'll be over in the fun threads.

Bernie's goals/agenda are largely unrealistic.
Hillary's record is questionable.
But "equally jokey?" No. Both are infinitely more qualified than Trump, a reality TV star and dubious entrepreneur who has offered nothing of substance throughout his campaign. Both have actually been elected to and held office, requiring them to speak to, work with, and address the needs of their constituents, and to work with and compromise with their colleagues on both sides of the aisle, and to have some idea of how the government actually works. Trump just says, "The Mexicans will be happy when I bring in all these jobs." That's not policy, it's just theater.

You're not seriously trying to say that Sanders and Clinton have done that are you?

Moreover, he continues to disregard Hillary's transgressions that IMO, make her twice as unfit for the position as Trump. It's basically an endorsement for a criminal over a "reality TV star and dubious entrepreneur". That's insane to me.
