RJ Davis coming back wasn’t a good idea

I think Lubin (or Claud) at the 5 and Wash at the 4. We need size and can't win against most teams with 4 guards.
I really don't think the right type of player is on the roster. They can certainly start 2 traditional bigs and see how it goes. I'm not completely against it because nothing else has worked for the starting 5. But none of the 3 traditional bigs are legitimate rim protectors. You hear it during every broadcast. When a team doesn't have a rim protector, the other team needs to attack the basket. Well UNC has 0 rim protectors so the rim will always be vulnerable. Realistically, Seth is UNC's best rim protector, lol.

The other issue is if you go 2 traditional bigs, can either of them stay out of foul trouble long enough to adequately give you legitimate minutes with 2 bigs together. All of the bigs are averaging over 5 fouls committed per 40 minutes. So that obviously needs to reduce significantly or else they'll go to the bench for extended minutes and get out of rhythm.

I don't quite understand Hubert going to the bench so early with new starting lineups. Don't you need those 5 to have a few possessions to get acclimated in game situations together? Idk, I thought it was weird and defeated the purpose of the lineup changes the last couple of games.

If it were me, I would probably start Cadeau, Jackson, Trimble, Withers, and flip a coin between Washington and Lubin... Probably Lubin slightly. But benching RJ realistically isn't going to happen. I view RJ and Jackson as really similar players. Jackson is bigger and more explosive and RJ is more experienced. But that gives you more size in the backcourt, gives you more athleticism in the backcourt, and you still have a late clock 1-on-1 player who can get his own when crap hits the fan. I don't think you would have that with a Cadeau/Trimble/Powell backcourt.

Washington simply has to simply play better. People may think he's playing out of position. And while that might be fair, he still needs to knock down the practice 3s he's getting. While I'm not a fan of how the coach is setting up the offense, the players have left a looooot of points on the floor so far this season. Lots of open 3s being missed, lots of layups being missed, some untimely misses on front ends of 1-and-1s... I think the reality is it's a collective clusterf*** of a season so far. Hubert definitely misread his roster but RJ is playing the worst basketball of his starting career. Washington hasn't made a single 3 yet and Cadeau has been better but has shown the same inconsistencies that he showed last year. This is a top down problem from the coach at the top to the last man on the roster.

2025 recruiting....

We could end up with no worse than 12 losses, and Hubert might resume his mastery of the portal. In which case we'll look back at this as a blip, and remind ourselves that we had only lost to a few very good teams at this point in time.
He's only mastered the portal one time and that was with Manek. Manek wasn't rated super high in the portal either. Just happened to work out real good for us.

Next Coach

If the assumption is there will be a head coaching change in the relative near future (let's say within 2 years), the question is what do you want from your coach? Because I don't think it's as simple as "try to get the best head coach" for this particular program. I really don't.

First off, I don't care if the coach has any UNC roots and I don't think it should have any impact on the next head coach. I don't view UNC as such a special place that only a UNC person can handle it. I might be wrong. I mainly focus on the basketball part of this equation. I don't know what other things are involved.

But if it's purely about getting the best coach in the country who might realistically consider, I would call Kelvin Sampson. I think he's the best head coach in the country right now (either him or Hurley). He's had really bad injury luck going into and during the NCAA Tournament. Also, not off to the best start this season (close losses to Auburn and Alabama), but I'd be hard pressed to find a better head coach right now. The question with him is will the fans accept a slow tempo team? Kelvin Sampson teams don't run. Does that matter? Does UNC need to find a particular style of basketball to fit their program? Or would you accept a pretty substantial coaching upgrade regardless of style? It wouldn't be a longterm solution, but who cares? It isn't a longterm economy anymore.

My other shortlist would be the somewhat usual suspects: Mark Few, Nate Oats, and Scott Drew

Then there are the other good coaches that you wonder can they handle this kind of program? Someone like Shaka Smart who really struggled at Texas and seems to have found a good fit at Marquette.

The only UNC connected one that's a candidate is Wes Miller right? Idk, doesn't really excite me but who knows. I just think it's really unlikely that of all of the coaching candidates out there, the best one for this program is someone who played at UNC.

The Roy situation was different. He proved to be an elite coach before coming here. His candidacy was probably an easier one to connect to UNC. He had UNC connections, plus he was churning out big time seasons at a big time program. So which of those qualities do you want at UNC? Because you can't have them all unless Wes Miller turns Cincinnati into something they're probably not. I would prefer a coach who has some big program and big expectations experience over someone who just has UNC connections.

I think UNC can win without being such a nepo baby.

My other things is please for the love of god... Hire a schemer and not a scheme.

OOTB Carolina football discussion thread

All this media exposure and hype would be a good thing except that it’s exposing that UNC is a totally dysfunctional cluster fuk when it comes to making coaching changes. Evidently some behind the scenes, power struggle has frozen the process with Belichick as a rift between the board of trustees and Bubba Cunningham is exposed. What a disaster.

Belichick presented a 400 pg manifesto to unc detailing his vision for the program. It is a total restructure of how things are done and includes min pay for two staffs (one coaching the other recruiting) and what improvements would be necessary. It would have to be signed off by numerous people some who evidently are not on board. He asked for an answer within 24 hrs which would be today. We’ll see.
if this results in breaking up the idiotic handling of our football program from the University standpoint that has little to do with winning football games and building the kind of program we should have always had, I'm all for it.

I read that one of the higher ups got his panties wadded up over the timing of Mack's firing and is pissed at Bubba over it. I say how about STFU and let the man hired to be athletic director do what you hired him for.
