Dims politicized the FBI, DOJ, now FEMA too? And Pubs are the threat to Democracy. Riiiiiiight.
Spot on gary-7! I loved how we came out in the second half and took it to them! Our D stepped up and boy did we rebound! So awesome to have a true PG! Cadeau is an elite level passer! The contributions we got was good off the bench. I really like Trimble and what he brings. It’s early and guys are learning roles. A lot of learning and growing went on in that second half. You nailed it Gary- we forced it a little in crunch time, but will learn from it! We showed we can play with anybody!...and well, damn.
As I tried to explain beforehand, beating KU at Phog was a monumental task, but y'know what? We damn near did.
So, let's take a look:
- Sorry (not) if it offends anybody, but some of the nonsense I've seen posted here was exposed for what it is. We just walked into the toughest environment in college hoops, against the #1 team, and took it to the wire. This UNC team is not a "mess". It has strengths and weaknesses and iis a work-in-progress.
- So, basic stuff. KU got "home cooking" in being allowed to be "physical" and Good Lord at the uncalled illegal screens --- I counted TWELVE of the handoff/ass-check variety --- but here's the good news: As I've harped on over and over, the AGGRESSOR gets the calls, and we didn't back down. Instead, we maintained aggressiveness and kept attacking the basket, and started geting enough calls to get to the line enough to make a difference. This was vital, as we shot 28/31 FTs.
- Reality check: OK -- we all know that we lack bulk inside, but as I mentioned pregame, Dickinson cannot guard JWash. Well, turns out he couldn't guard Withers either. JWit knoked down huge 3s and drove to the rack effectively in the second half.
- In the texts I get from my "coach-mafia" during games, the adjective that is so often used to describe Cadeau is "sick". Well yeah... my boy is SICK. Folks, we're watching something VERY special here, and he needs to play 35+ each and every game, as he is the ONE guy we can't replace.
- Our "comeback" was fueled by what I prescribed pregame --- REBOUNDING!!! They were unconscious shooting in the first half, but we cleaned glass in the second, and the transition game got going. After getting bullied on the glass in the first half, we ended up outrebounding them by one for the game!
- On a personnel note. Harris is a dirty little f***, and EC flat took him to school.
- Bad news: Too much "hero-ball". Shot-selection hurt us late. RJ was forcing all game, and despite Withers' key shots, he also forced late.
- As for the Frosh, Jackson rose to the occasion with some key ifrst-half contributions. Powel gave as good as he got, and our guy James Brown acquitted himself well.
- Hubert, my brother: PLEASE run more offense thru JWash and PLEASE utilize scrambles; These guys are made for it and our personnel can't be allowed to be sitting ducks. FORCE THE ACTION instead of allowing opponents to bully.
Anyway, hopefully we can stop dissing this team. There are areas for needed improvement for damned sure, but we can compete with ANYBODY...
Not if EC throws the ball away after handling it in the half court. I’m surprised no one has pointed it out. Two to start out the game and two in the mid second half. Weird tos considering how good his looks are. Luckily he has several sweet assists, but not many rebounds. He’s never rebounds well even for a guard. Hopefully he can keep improving for sure. He has great vision and instincts. He’s not going to have the same season as last year. Bacot and Ingram could take late shot clock situations from him. RJ’s efficiency will likely take a hit this year.
Honestly, I hope his role reduces. That’s probably a sign that Trimble and Cadeau’s increased production is for real.
Its early but I think camping RJ in the corner with Withers in the opposite corner and Cadeau getting 1-5 ball screens would be UNC’s best half court offense.
The fewer dribbles RJ has in a game, the offense might be better off.
Lubin is a very productive backup big. High IQ, active and tough. He gives us a mobile cutter and offensive rebounder. He keeps his hands high and has nice length despite being only 6'8".Well, that changed. He was the strongest force on our roster in the paint. Hurt when he followed out.
Very good post! You touched on a lot of things I was seeing during the game.A really interesting game. We saw our flaws, we saw some of our strengths, we saw some surprise contributions too.
Love the fight they showed tonight. The frontcourt is overmatched and Hubert has a lot to figure out there. But we saw the blueprint for this team against Q1 teams and that’s get into the bonus as early as possible and wear out the FT line. That will let them stay in games when they’re not making shots.
It’s early but we saw who Hubert trusts in a big game. Last year, we saw Hubert shrink the bench in big games as soon as Cadeau started. Clearly Tyson needs to do a lot to get minutes in big games unless the matchup is perfect for him.
It’s the type of game where I think almost every feeling is a valid one. The first half was alarming in a bad way. The second half was awesome to see this team has some guts and toughness.
Micro, I feel good about having a chance to win this kind of game when RJ and Cadeau combine 1/10 from 3.
Macro, concern for RJ. No longer have a Bacot or Ingram to take some load off in late clock situations. RJ is kind of flying solo in those situations. His efficiency will take a hit this season.
Although Washington is capable of making the shot he took, I want the final minute execution to be better. Too many times over the last 2 seasons where the wrong player took a critical shot or the execution was terrible. You shot 31 FTs. Put the pressure on the defense.
Also too many transition points allowed by the second unit in the first half. I know your freshmen but have to understand floor balance and sprinting back on every play. This team isn’t good enough to be giving up transition points.
Also, its early but we got a glimpse on who Hubert trusts in a real game. Right now it’s 8 dudes. Unless Tyson didn’t play because of the matchup, he will need to earn some trust.
Fun game. It’s a “socrates asks whose bias do you seek” kind of game.
He’s not going to have the same season as last year. Bacot and Ingram could take late shot clock situations from him. RJ’s efficiency will likely take a hit this year.If anyone to blame for this loss, it's RJ hands down.. 5th year senior, all American, ACC poy and 3-15 from the field? 1-7 from 3?
