OOTB's Political Thread . ..

Having the most important person/job in the world handled by someone who is two or three quarts short and literally everyone around them not only knows it, but covers it up and lies to everyone else claiming that he is running at top efficiency doesn't qualify as one of the biggest scandals? I mean, who actually is our president? Who has and is running things for the next month?

Why Does This Team Consistently Come Out Flat

It's my personal preference that you don't have a PG that needs to initiate everything. I know that's sort of the tradition at UNC to have a PG that controls everything. All I know is the best teams in the country can trigger their offense through a big. UCLA was able to trigger their offense through their big and they probably win that game if that big didn't get into foul trouble. Once they couldn't run their offense through a big and they became guard dribble happy, their offense stalled and let the game get away.

That solution is clearly not on this roster. It would be coaching malpractice to trigger your offense through Withers, lol. And I don't know if Washington or Lubin are skilled enough to do that. But you look at all of the teams that usually make a run in the tournament... Last year, NC State had that really wide bodied kid. Duke ran their offense through Filipowski. Alabama ran through their bigs especially against UNC. UConn had Karaban and Clingin to trigger through. Hell, UNC's last final four consisted of a lot of offense being run through Brady Manek. That isn't a coincidence.

This team obviously doesn't have that. So they're limited and this season will probably end relatively early. Going forward... It isn't about which PG UNC has IMO. If they want to get back to being a really good program that needs to be considered for significant things every season, they need to have a big that they can run their offense through. I prefer a big who can score a little, who can pass a little, and who can take more than 1 dribble if needed. I prefer someone like Manek myself. But UNC has traditionally gone for more of the back to the basket big. Fine, you can trigger your offense through that!

But along with Cadeau's lack of confidence in his jumper and the other clear issues the bigs have... This team's gaping offensive hole right now is they don't have a big skilled enough to run any offense through. Skilled in scoring, passing, or handling.
Not the popular opinion but I agree. I laugh when I hear or read pg1. Not popular either I know.

I do agree with the lack of movement and it making it difficult but several tos are just too much. Someone used the analogy of KISS which is really simple but very much in play even with higher athletics. And yes being to pg usually means you get back first or cover runouts but some guards rebound better than others no matter where they play. As far as the lack of bigs I agree. We’ve had way too many assists missed because of it too. lol I thought for sure that Gary would have eluded to it for this past game. At one time RJ could have had around four or five in a row, but had no finish from the post or fumble. EC too

Quick stuff (UCLA game)...

I’ll just say that I think Hubert is leaving a lot on the table right now. He’s nowhere close to doing the best job he can do with this program.
I agree but to add a culmination of players, fit, culture of basketball in general ie nil and privilege. alwould about to pass out when he reads this lol. I’d also say RJ Davis sucking it up from deep and pressing too hard, EC uncontrolled and reckless at times, Seth shrinking and not being seen on offense until prodded, and bigs being well…., are all factors too. Someone please tag him in this to show I bad mouthed RJ lol. I don’t know how to tag.

Why Does This Team Consistently Come Out Flat

the roster makeup sucks bottom line. but put this group under a better staff and there’s adjustments and better sets being run, etc. jay wright literally made a living with rosters that were dominated by 4 guard lineups. Hubert is incapable.
Jay Wright had big guards so I doubt he would've ever recruited Cadeau and RJ to begin with(?). Doesn't seem to really fit his strategy of posting up guards. It's a great strategy because guards aren't used to defend in the post so if you can develop that, then that's a huge advantage. I've been asking for UNC guards to develop playing off 2-feet in the paint for a while, but that's not really a UNC thing. The last guard I recall doing it well was McCants and that guy was built like a tank for a college kid.

A big issue so far this season is that Cadeau's jump shot is improving IMO, but he's not a willing shooter. Seth's jump shot has improved but he isn't a willing jump shooter either. Also, Cade Tyson and Jalen Washington being relative non-threats this season really hurts. I can't imagine three of those things were part of the plan going into this season. Hubert made it sound like Cadeau was going to be an All American this season. Then there's no way they were anticipating Cadeau and Washington to basically be non-factors.

I know this will sound somewhat sacrilegious here. But I thought UNC played a lot better in the UCLA game and that was not a ridiculously up tempo game. And this season, they've been good at only one thing consistently offensively and that's getting to and making FTs. And if you compare this team to the really good really small teams of the past (2005 Illinois, 2021 Baylor, and those Nova teams).... None of those teams played fast. All of them played slow and played fewer than 70 possessions per game.

It's not apples to apples. That Illinois team had 3 dudes who could shoot and make a ton of 3s. That Villanova team could post up huge guards and those guards could also make 3s without hesitating. That Baylor team lead the country in 3PT percentage.

The hard question to answer right now is if Cadeau and Seth aren't willing shooters, then what are the answers for this team? I think there's a chance that it's to play slower, get into the bonus and make it a FT game. It's the only thing they do well offensively. The other factor is this team doesn't defend well and it took UCLA's big getting into foul trouble to get some stops. If you can't defend at all, why do you want to run?

This is the other problem with having 0 size in the backcourt. I don't really care about the bigs. At this point, they are who they are. But if you're going to focus your strategy around your guards. If they're really small, they better be able to shoot the lights out (2021 Baylor, 2005 Illinois). If you have really big, physical guards, it gives you more options to be versatile offensively.
