Glad to reply:^ So, DSouthr, two questions for you-
1) Would you give Hubert the 25/26 season to begin the return of Carolina hoops to a top level?
2) If you would not (and you can roleplay Bubba C), who would you realistically* choose as our HC?
* assuming Jay Wright is not interested in returning to the hardwood
"What have we seen over the last four years to make us confident Hubert can develop and coach up a team full of good players?" Not enough to be rock solid confident, I hope you didn't expect me to say anything other than that? LOLIf we do have a new commitment to NIL, I would pose this question - What have we seen over the last four years to make us confident Hubert can develop and coach up a team full of good players? I witnessed a preseason #1 team opt out of the NIT and I can’t not remember that happened. This year appears to be another example of a top 10 preseason team that will miss the ncaa tournament.
Kool, I believe the line up we started last night was what so many fans on this site were wanting? I didn't, made no sense to me for a tiny starting line up to get even more tiny. I wanted us to have Jalen at the 4 and either Lubin or JWit at the 5 to start the game, moving Drake to the 3 as soon as we saw for sure Tyson was not going to be the answer, and I would have started Seth at the 2, Cadeau at the point but starting Jack at the 2 would not have upset me either. Just knew that 2 starting guards that are 6ft tall only with a broken tape measure was not a good idea, nor is it now.Hubert keeps staring this small lineup…Have we won a game with it yet…This program is lost right now…
First, THANK YOU for such a quality reply, there isn't a single thing in your reply that I can see as wrong. You asked a great question, let me reply,Dave & Dunk - I appreciate the optimism and have tried to maintain it thus far as well. I also posted pregame that we shouldn't get our panties in a wad when we get blown out at Duke. Horrible matchup of size and talent on their home floor.
What has really turned the corner on my thinking is that we are on our 23rd game of Hubert's 4th season. We finally saw a zone and a game where we switched defenses. Both slowed dook, at least long enough for them to try to figure out what we were doing.
Size is difficult to deal with on the basketball court, but not impossible. I'll never forget playing against a 7' 2 dude in college (I'm 6'7). You can't just look at the mismatch and walk off the court. You have to figure out how to utilize whatever advantage you have. So I'll ask again, what happened to utilizing our strengths that we talked about before the season began. We knew we were going to be small and we talked about pressing and running waves of people at opponents. What I have seen so far this year is half court sets (actually it's usually just one play) and us pounding the ball into the floor until we have 8 seconds left in the shot clock.
Unfortunately, all of the issues plaguing this team ultimately come down to coaching. From composition of the team, to the way utilize our players, to lineups, to sub patterns, team chemistry, and of course the X's and O's all stop with Hubert.
As I just said in another thread, I take no joy in saying that I believe Hubert needs to be replaced.
Very fair points, he also led a flawed roster that was awful the year before, with a mass portal exodus find their groove and get to the National Championship game. He had 1 year portal adds last year that meshed and overachieved to many as a 1 seed, and lost a one bucket here or there game to Bama the final 4 squad in the sweet 16.If we do have a new commitment to NIL, I would pose this question - What have we seen over the last four years to make us confident Hubert can develop and coach up a team full of good players? I witnessed a preseason #1 team opt out of the NIT and I can’t not remember that happened. This year appears to be another example of a top 10 preseason team that will miss the ncaa tournament.
Finally, someone in the media is ready to call it like it is and not sugarcoat shit.[from USA Today]
Nearly four years into his tenure, it’s fairly clear he isn't a top-10 coach, a top-20 coach or a top-30 coach. So why would North Carolina allow that to continue?Because he’s a really classy guy? Because he’s an alum? Because he made a national championship game? If that's the standard, Bruce Weber, Ben Howland, Paul Hewitt and Mike Davis would have had job security for life. Alas, that’s not how the world works at programs that are serious about basketball.North Carolina has a lot to think about over the next couple months. Maybe it's time to aim a little higher.
Wait a minute. Are you saying that Pat Sullivan was more frustrating than Caleb love?!Lebo had a .487 winning percentavge at ECU before being fired. He went on to help coach a high school team before a 1 year stint as an assistant in the g league before Hubert hired him. Just another friendship hire. We have way to many jobs for the boys.
Sullivan is the most frustrating player i've seen at UNC in my 50 years. Its not a coincedence we look like a terribly prepared team every game. We don't recognize shooters or execute offensively. Thats due to coaching.
Seems fair. A little higher marks on recruiting than I would give but not outrageous.Recruiting out of HS = A-
Recruiting out of portal = B (higher if you blame NIL)
Developing players = C-
Pregame prep = C-
Halftime adjustments = B
In-game adjustments = C-
Leadership = C-
