Carolina at Pittsburgh game thread on: Tuesday 2 January 2024

I do not know what Jackass (Must have been a ABCer (Anybody but Carolina) person who set up three straight road games for UNC to open up the new year but after the gauntlet games the team opened up with this schedule just does not seem fair or realistic…

To me the two games lost to Pittsburgh last season by a total of three points was probably the reason the NCAA committee decided Carolina was not worthy of being in March Madness.

The Panthers are very physical and their guards last season had no problems beating up and scoring against the Tar Heels smaller guards. Carolina again will start two small guards in the backcourt so the hope is that Bacot, Ingram and Withers can bully the Panthers up front. If Pittsburgh continues to use their bigger guards against Davis and Cadeau I would hope Ryan would play a part defensively and stop all of that nonsense.

With the calendar year changing over it is time for Bacot to play like an All American and take no prisoners both offensively and defensively. Armando needs to demand the ball in the paint because only getting a single digit number of shots for the minutes he plays is ridiculous.

Washington and Trimble and Withers need to continue their scoring off the bench and help to make life difficult for their opponents. This on paper looks like a perfect game for Withers to use his frame and score in close…

I would like the team to play with a chip on their shoulder and to remember the two narrow losses to the Panthers last year and win this battle in memory of Eric Montross…

ACC season is off to a fast start today 12/30/2023

(1.) Been some interesting games today, one that surprise me was ND easy win over UVA. Considering the struggles which ND has had so far this season, really thought UVA would win in a rout. When you consider UVA last four games prior to this one they managed to beat a Northeastern by 2 point at home, they were blown out at Memphis, and they beat an outmanned Morgan State.
(2.) Syracuse managed to hang on and beat Pitt at home today. Pitt is 0-2 in the ACC thus far, this is a game which Carolina cannot be take lightly on Tuesday night, as they will be trying to right the sinking ship at home.
(3.) Weak Forest has a pretty decent team this year with Reid finally being able to play, most remember him as a target when he was in HS. He went to Gonzaga, and then transferred to Weak Forest being eligible this year. Standing 7'0" at 240 pounds. They are currently handling VT by the score of 50 to 26 with 18:59 left in the second half.
(4.) Florida State lost at home to Lipscomb today, going to be a long season for Hamilton this year, currently at 6-5 and 0-1 in the ACC.

On Saban and Rees

"As Saban stares down what could be his seventh national title with the Crimson Tide, he does so with his seventh offensive coordinator in the past 11 years and his ninth overall. Remarkably, Saban has won national titles with five different offensive coordinators."

How can that be? The maxim most live by is that continuity of staff is a MUST. Many fail to see that the alleged wisdom is always in the mouths of those HCs and ADs who wish to excuse their failures to remove less than top notch staffs. Just like players, staff members who fail tomproduce at top levels must be replaced or else the program will become set in mediocre stone. Saban always draws coaches who wants to learn how to master the craft, and Saban always is ready to find them a spot, usually starting as off the field help.

What we saw this year at Bama is the most dramatic change on the offensive side during a season in Saban history. And that goes to 1st year HC Tommy Rees. He di not just oversee making adjustments during games; he did the far more difficult thing to overhaul the offense before third of the season w south so that Bama could one again be in the hunt for a National Championship. He could wait for another recri=uiting class or two. It ws either get this Dione with Xs and Os now, or we could be a 9-3 team.

Rees now has Saban experience. He previously had Kelly experience. He is a Notre Dame grad. He is, because of ND ties, the type big time OC who could get approved by the UNC Powers That Be as HC. I can see them all turning up their news at UGA DC Glenn Schumann, but ND is ND. Art Chansky and other Chapel Hill types who turn up their noses at SEC football while loving Sally Brown and seeing Mack as about as unoffensive to them as possible short of an Ivy League football coach with an Ivy League degree will have a hard time being openly opposed to an ND guy like Rees. Bubba's ND formation actually could do some good for UNC football if he could bring Rees on.
