Carolina vs Virginia game thread—-ACC Tournament—Thursday 9 March 2023

News has just broke that Virginia center Vander Plas broke a hand yesterday at practice and is done for the year. The wahoos are already not big and that loss may be crucial but with Bacot on a tender ankle it may balance out.

Virginia still has Clark, Gardner and Franklin and defensive specialist Beekman. Gardner at 6’6 is their most dangerous offensive thread and Black needs to hold him down.

Nance had a monster game last time they player especially from downtown but now with a big advantage in the paint I would hope stay inside instead of outside.

RJ Davis will finally go against someone his size and hopefully have a big game.

Pace is the story of this contest so every possession counts and second and third shots are very important.

Just play one game at a time and let the cards fly as they may…

My question......

On a night when everything went as I expected, is where was Jackson Watkins tonight? When I get disgusted watching whats on the court, I usually find myself looking for antics from the end of the bench when a 3 pointer is made or a slam dunk. Hes always flexing, scowling, dancing or some other kind of bodily movement with the other three that never take off their warm up jackets. Any info?

This is pretty important. More important than wondering if a NIT invite should be accepted.

How bad has this year been in comparison to other "bad" years?

So, I know we can pretty much all agree that this year, at least by Carolina Basketball standards, has been bad and difficult to watch at times. My question though, if you were to compare this to an average Carolina basketball season, how poor would you say this year has been?

I ask because even though I've grown up a North Carolina fan, this was the first year I really started caring about the team and watching all of their games. I think it was partially because of how amazing their improbable run was last year, but it's safe to say that at this point, the team hasn't lived up to its expectations. I don't have much knowledge of previous years' teams except for some memories of the 2016 and 2017 championship games, partially because I'm so young (I'll be a freshman at UNC next year if that is any reference to my age).

I know there have been bad teams in recent years such as the 2019-2020 team, and I also think we were spoiled last year with the miracle run in March despite the team's underwhelming regular season, but those, along with this year, seem to be relatively standout bad seasons when compared to UNC's program history.

I wonder if this season is really that bad or if it just seems like it is because of recency bias and the expectations we all had for this team coming into the year. What do you all think?

Out coached. Out Played

Same song different day. Bennett so totally won the coaching battle. Virginia always moving, cutting on offense, meanwhile everybody stands around for UNC and watches Davis, or Love, dribble around for 15 seconds, then run the high ball screen and hope for the best. Thank goodness for Davis or it would have been a 25 pt game. I hate they lost, but almost fitting that it is over. He won’t be, but Hubert ought to be on the hottest seat in the country next year. Right now he is easily amongst the worst coaches in the conference. And what has happened to Puff? Never going to be a superstar, but at one time was effective. Lately he has been a waste of minutes on the court.

Very quick stuff (BC game - ACCT)...

..and go ahead and say it, I know what you're thinking.

"Where has that been all season?" And it's a fair question, but let's enjoy it:

- Once we figured out their little wrinkle of creating 15 ft pull-ups off top curls, there was little easy for BC.

- But... what was more refreshing was on the offensive end --- better ball-movement off the pass (less dribbling), mostly good takes and shot-selection (at least 90% of them), good timing on kick-outs, etc... and the results actually matched(!)

- And maybe most refreshing of all?--- an actual functioning sub rotation, using the right players mostly the way they should be. Speaking of that, this is 2 games in a row in which Dunn and Styles get consistent minutes, and even just that changed their confidence levels.

- Tight execution to start the second half pretty much took the starch outta BC

- Finally, I REALLY hope this wasn't a one-time deal for tonight's opponent... and I also really hope Mando's ankle responds tomorrow -- that next day is usually the roughest...

Anyway, good start, and we're gonna need to repeat tomight's shot-selection and replicate that 40 minutes of effort from the last UVA game --- and a good way to do that is keeping fresh legs...
